The Stakes Just Got Higher at Circle7/KGO 900 Front --Memo to Trixie and Tommy C --The Mouse Ain't Happy at Palace Coup

RICH LIEBERMAN 415 MEDIA: 415 Media Exclusive: Watkowski Might Be a KGO-TV Goner; Interviews for GM Gig in ABC O and O Chain
Tracey Watkowski-Silva
Memo to Circle7 Tommy and Trixie

Most TV General Managers, especially those inked by te Mouse, can't speak publicly about Trump, the Giants, Global Warming, or anything else, even Rich Lieberman, without Disney O and O approval.

ITS IN THE FUCKING EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT!

Every ABC 7/KGO-TV GM, from Russ Coughlin to Joe Ahern and beyond the grave KNEW THAT!

Ahern's only big moment was getting shitfaced and pissing on shoes during the St. Patty's Parade.

It appears, ABC 7, GM Tom "Tommy Boy" Cibrokwsi is also now pissing in his adult diaper, poised for Southwest one way to Burbank HQ... for FUCKING with the Mouse.  And me both directly and indirectly, what a fine coincidence.

Sources tell me Cibrokwsi was blindsided by ND Tracey "Trixie" Watkowski. (smart enough not to sign the petition) In a well organized Palace coup. She encouraged Tommy Boy knowing full well the shit-storm would land on Tommy.

Behind his back, Trixie and her legions paint Tommy Boy as a steak house buffoon and this FUCK--UP will grease her way to the GM corner office. It's ruthless. It's a power grab. It's so Trixie.

It doesn't FUCKING MATTER.

In the meantime, congrats Trix, you outwitted ole Tommy C at my expense.

Another TV News Person Splits for PIO Gig; Matt Keller Leaving KGO-TV for Southbay PR Position

Related image
Matt Keller leaving KGO for Southbay PIO gig
Matt Keller is leaving KGO-TV (ABC7) which isn't that big a deal these days; other anchors and reporters are splitting TV for PIO (Public Info officers) like this guy, and this guy too, Robert Lyles.

The latest? Yeah, Keller himself.

The inside dope as told to me from a Circle7 source:

"He was promised more anchoring than he actually got; when he didn't get what he was promised, he looked for something outside the TV News biz."

And is now the latest to leave TV News and become a PR flack. The money is sometimes better and so is the security.

The Latest on KGO Morning Diva Natasha Zouves; Recovering from Hair Mousse Fall and Contemplating Legal Action Against KGO/Disney; Castro MIA Probably $-Related; Deanno Talks at KPIX Still On-Going; He Wants More Dough; Darya Folsom Still Embarrassing KRON; Papa Will Make Adjustment to New Niners Gig; Rothmann/Owens Spiral Down at KGO Radio; Hot Rumor: 'Toonces, The Driving Cat' New PD? Friday Feast

Natasha Zouves
I WAS THE FIRST to tell you what went down with Natasha Zouves at KGO-TV. She's been home recovering from her hair goo slippage and planning a return to her Southern California roots. She's still on the mend and playing footsy about her status.

I e-mailed her and asked what was happening (giving her a chance to formally respond) and she said virtually nothing. I expected that. Remember, she might not be ready for primetime. Furthermore, she's no favorite in the newsroom either.

Here's another whammy: while she's essentially gone from KGO she has pondered a worker's comp suit against Circle7 and ABC; that would complicate her next gig in LA but don't rule out anything.

CASTRO MIA BUT...

Meanwhile, Jessica Castro, who's been filling in for Zouves has not been on the air since January 10 and no one at KGO seems to know why.

Jessica Castro
I have a source who speculates that Castro is pissed off at her paltry salary compensation (low six figures) and placement in the KGO morning presence. Castro can pout all she wants; she doesn't have any leverage and she knew full well that Disney (which owns ABC) doesn't pay their 4th-tier anchors any decent money. So too Zouves which might explain why she's considering suing the company.

DEANNO TALKS CONTINUE

My report about KPIX wanting to try weather guy, Paul Deanno in a hybrid news/weather gig is still in talks stage but if that venture would to emerge, Deanno wants to be paid more money. It figures that CBS would take care of Deanno if he performed both as a news anchor and weather talent. Especially if that were to include his presence in the evening.

Brian Hackney does the same job but on the weekend and doesn't get any added money. Then again, Hackney is way down the totem pole at PIX working on the cheap and has been downgraded for years. He might be viewed as bright and engaging but he's a virtual retread at 855 Battery.

Paul Deanno
Deanno is seen as an emerging presence on news; if that's the case (and I agree) then why not just 86 him from weather and make him a full-time anchor on news alone. Which seems to be what Deanno might be inferring --here's a rumor: Deanno replaces the forever bitter-beer-face-looking, Alan Martin.

*IT HAS BEEN SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN, but bears repeating every so often: Darya Folsom continues to EMBARRASS KRON. Sure, KRON has a lot to be embarrassed about but Folsom's continuing circus show in the morning is a sad ass spectacle; she has no shame; she doesn't give a damn about what almost everyone else thinks and she KILLS whatever credibility KRON has by her BS presence on its morning news.

If KRON brass thinks she helps the ratings, they're sadly mistaken. She's in actuality a detriment to the operation and nobody looks at her anymore nor takes her seriously. She's a nothing; a nobody and her boobs have been a non-story for years. The only BOOB that thinks she still got it is her boyfriend/slave master/schophant, Aaron Pero, the News Director that keeps  job because he possesses state secrets and has compromising pictures in a local bank safe. I'm joking on the latter but who knows.

THIS AND THAT

*New 49ers PBP broadcaster, Greg Papa, is great on radio and I like his 95.7FM 'The Game' takes, but it's questionable he'll stay on that show once football season starts; I can't imagine The Game allowing a rival (KNBR) talent on their air but it's just a guess.

Greg Papa
An analysis on Papa doing 49ers: the professional and talented Papa will make the adjustment to broadcasting Niners' football and easy one. Over the years, I've been critical of Papa but I've never questioned his broadcast ability and football acumen. He's damn good. His pivot to the 49ers from twenty years with the Raiders will be unusual and jarring at first but eventually people will get used to his play-by-play. Probably more an adjustment for Niners' fans then Raiders' rooters.

*Speaking of the Raiders while the world awaits their home (before Vegas) next year, where will they be on radio? Hardly a word. They will NOT be on KCBS that's for sure.

*Internal issues galore and a plethora of turmoil inside their respective newsrooms: KTVU and KGO-TV.

*If and when KGO Radio has a new/latest 2019 iteration, both John Rothmann and hanger-on, Ronn Owens will not have any role. Owens has been drifting away on the horrifically awful, "Ronn Owens Report" and Rothmann, whose stock has continued a steady spiral downward has been told he'll have no position there, only as a perpetual fill-in, if at all.

Meanwhile, a HOT RUMOR!! New KGO Radio PD? Hard to believe but word on the street is the PD will be Toonces, The Driving Cat! Wow, now that's some extraordinary depth by the fearless kitty!

Internal Combustion at KTVU and KGO-TV; Current State Turbulence and Tumult; Plus Some Advice to New Circle7 GM, Tom Cibrowski; 415 Media Tuesday Open

Image result for combustion TUMULT too. And loads and loads of pounding flesh ready to explode at any given moment.

Let's not beat around the bush--there's a big knot inside both KGO-TV and KTVU; more notably at KGO and KTVU to a lesser extent but trouble nonetheless.

LETS EXAMINE:

Image result for KTVU Television Oakland
KTVU building and studios
KTVU's numbers are still very high, particularly in the morning and late night which would normally translate into a happy camp in Jack London Square. Not so. Since Fox took over in October, 2014, things have gradually gone to the dumper. There is a noticeable rift between management and the working staff; even the big shot anchors have become more tense and nervous as salaries have been slashed and a more leaner operation has been instituted. Sure, the Somerville salary (at $600K) is pretty good in today's new anchor compensation phase; too bad Somerville is not the happiest of folks around the newsroom--another story we'll get to one day.

Image result for KTVU Television Oakland

The average salary has been lowered dramatically as viewer numbers dwindle; KTVU isn't the only station affected by that note as a new, younger, demo watches less and less of broadcast TV News and instead have flocked to their mobile devices and watched outlets that stream content. TV news in general has become sort of a lost tradition and the numbers are getting even more staggeringly low.

That said, KTVU has always been the market leader and still is but a growing number of its personnel are on edge and, as indicated in a previous column, have taken to going to work akin to having a root canal. "It's not fun here anymore," a longtime staffer told me via e-mail. That person, like all others spoke on condition of anonymity because they feared retaliation from management. Paranoia is a big issue at Channel 2 and will continue to be so as over 50 cameras watch the huddled masses.

KTVU has been hit by a massive number of anchors and reporters leaving the station, with Ken Wayne, the latest and most tenured news reader; Wayne is now as KRON making half of what he earned at Fox2 but it's a job and that's better than nothing. Nonetheless, Wayne's split left many folks unnerved and upset. It was a move strictly about the money; a move that won't rock the boat but indicative of people in suits who devalue long termers like Wayne.

KGO-TV GM Tom Cibrowski
*Speaking of bleeding talent, ABC7 (KGO) as I pointed out Monday is not a sea of tranquility and whose own in-house issues have turned a once-stable 900 Front edifice into a house of fire. Talk about tumult. And Her Highness has quite a jittery staff on her plate with even the most ardent fans of her reign (few if any) are having a hard time winning over staff fed up with people-less skills, growing dissatisfaction over roles and assignments and overall confusion. A good boss would gather the troops together and talk turkey but Her Highness hasn't a clue how to conduct basic business technique. Maybe that's why she still has the job of News Director because in this day and age, incompetence seems to be a commodity.

The new big boss, GM Tom Cibrowski, is still finding his place and ordering furniture for his office. His reputation is good but his first move pissed off a lot of people, including longtime reporter, Katie Marzullo, who asked to report part time so, among other things, she could spend more time with her young kids.

Cibrowski rebuffed her and said no. Instead of trying to work out a compromise with a popular reporter, Cibrowski held firm and subsequently, Marzullo quit. She'll be leaving in a couple of weeks. Good way to rally the troops in your first month on the job but that doesn't surprise me; it's just more of the same management doo-doo that rips apart worker morale and causes major friction like that in the KGO newsroom.

Image result for dan ashley Ama Daetz kgoHere's my advice to Cibrowski as he meanders about the Embarcadero and orders the steak at Kokkari and drinks his second glass of the house cab, settle in and get down to business. Take Ashley to lunch and get out in front of the future contract negotiations and sign him to an extension, like today. You need stability and something to install confidence in the rank and file. That should be priority number one.

Don't stop there. Bring in some nice food and sodas for the staff and have a newsroom meeting. I'm not talking about your first "Hi, I'm Tom, nice to meet you meeting"; those are customary and par for the course, do something with a touch and have an air-it-all out meeting so everyone can get shit off their chest and vent. Now that's a way to rally the troops. First, you'll clear the air and second, they won't distrust you like they do now. And boy do they ever based on that first move with Marzullo.

Her Highness, Tracey Watkowski-Silva
Then maybe have a come-to-Jesus moment with Trixie; she's hated by almost the entire staff. I used to think it wasn't that bad and that some Circle7 staffers were being harsh and overblown but I've had people that I know and respect tell me that the woman is a control freak and lacks essential people skills. You, sir, want that in your newsroom?

Moreover, who exactly is in charge over there? If it's not you, sir, and TWS is the de facto boss, you got a problem. A BIG one.

She needs to be reigned in and fed a dose of how the Disney family is to be treated. Clearly, she didn't get the memo.

So, like Ashley, take her out to lunch at the Old Ship and over a couple of burgers and wine, ask her about why she has such a bad reputation and how she could change it--make life a little more harmonious for the staff, and in turn, for herself too. Think about it: if you have a dedicated news staff and the people are happy, then, darn, you just might have one helluva future Sweeps and boy how Mickey Mouse would love that!

Am I injecting too much common sense? Maybe, but I believe in the old, scientific method that, as my mother used to point out, "Treat people the way you want to be treated," right Tom?

I hope so but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

415 Media Exclu: Anchor Shuffle At KGO-TV; Zse Takes Over For Cheryl Jennings At 5 PM; Thomas To Solo-Anchor Weekend Nights; Zouves And Aqui New Morning News Anchors

 Kristin Zse will take over

departing Cheryl Jennings's 5 PM co-anchor spot and Eric Thomas will be anchoring weekend nights at KGO-TV, (ABC7), according to a knowledgeable broadcast source.

Both Thomas and Zse, as reported by 415 Media, are leaving KGO's Morning News. And, according to the source, both are "very happy" at the change. They should be: Thomas wasn't thrilled working with the temperamental Zse and Zse had some issues with the veteran, Thomas. Thomas will also do weeknight fill-in for Dan Ashley and Larry Beil.

Meanwhile, I've learned through the source the new morning anchors will be Natasha Zouves and Reggie Aqui, the "new kids" on the block.

KGO's anchor shuffling comes at a time when the ABC local "O and O" has strong ratings both late night and early evening. I haven't been thrilled with Zouves' perpetual "happy face" and quirky voice but moving her to mornings makes better sense where her style and demeanor might be a better fit.

Sylvia Chase KRON Experiment Was One Of Bay Area TV's Biggest Blunders

Sylvia Chase had name--BIG name. Like ABC, "20/20" name and big network gusto--and KRON, the old KRON, had plenty of desire and money to shove someone's way to make a splash --too bad it didn't work.

Chase was paid a handsome pile of dough, (close to a million bucks) to become part of the KRON family.

She debuted alongside co-anchor, Jim Paymar after the Super Bowl, 1986. Everything soon went downhill after that. Chase never moved the needle for KRON. In fact, her presence created quite a bit of jealousy and friction among station staffers-- I wonder why. In any event it was one of the biggest blunders in local TV history. And an expensive one at that.

Word On The Street: ABC Looking To Buy KRON; Disney Big Suits Coming To SF To 'Assess The Market'; Monday First Start

No one is talking on the record because they won't or can't but the big rumor is that ABC is actively interested in buying KRON. In fact, one of my sources told me that an offer was already on the table for around $200 million--I would assume that would include the mound of corporate debt too --in any event, the offer, supposedly, was turned down

But the idea makes too much sense. Which doesn't necessarily mean it will happen because of the load of issues ahead. But KRON is already inside the ABC Broadcast Center at 900 Front and has a SSA (shared-services agreement) with KGO-TV. One day soon you're going to see both station's air talent on each others screen. Privately, I'm told that ABC is sending a few of it major industry execs to SF to "assess the market." I doubt they're coming here just to eat at a few restaurants and walk the Embarcadero.

Yes, of course the unions are nervous.

The Sunday Talking Head Shows; My Favorite And Yours

 SUNDAY ROUTINE:

Glance at the Talk Shows which have dragged lately.

Meet The Press hasn't been the same since Tim Russert's death. Not a big Chuck Todd fan. Too Beltway for my taste and looks more like a Midwest dentist.

This Week  is an acquired taste; am I the only person who actually likes George Stephanopoulos? Sure, he can appear to be occasionally pompous--it's human nature, I've been known to be pompous too.

I've tried to watch Fox News Sunday but I can't stand Chris Wallace. His dad was better.

I've saved the best for last: CBS' iconic Face The Nation is the best Sunday talking-head program. Bob Schieffer is superb--seems to be getting better with age. Great interviewer. Common sense guy with a knack for asking the right question and tough as nails to boot. No surprise that FTN is the most popular show on Sunday.
