Natasha Zouves
I WAS THE FIRST to tell you what went down with Natasha Zouves at KGO-TV. She's been home recovering from her hair goo slippage and planning a return to her Southern California roots. She's still on the mend and playing footsy about her status.

I e-mailed her and asked what was happening (giving her a chance to formally respond) and she said virtually nothing. I expected that. Remember, she might not be ready for primetime. Furthermore, she's no favorite in the newsroom either.

Here's another whammy: while she's essentially gone from KGO she has pondered a worker's comp suit against Circle7 and ABC; that would complicate her next gig in LA but don't rule out anything.

CASTRO MIA BUT...

Meanwhile, Jessica Castro, who's been filling in for Zouves has not been on the air since January 10 and no one at KGO seems to know why.

Jessica Castro
I have a source who speculates that Castro is pissed off at her paltry salary compensation (low six figures) and placement in the KGO morning presence. Castro can pout all she wants; she doesn't have any leverage and she knew full well that Disney (which owns ABC) doesn't pay their 4th-tier anchors any decent money. So too Zouves which might explain why she's considering suing the company.

DEANNO TALKS CONTINUE

My report about KPIX wanting to try weather guy, Paul Deanno in a hybrid news/weather gig is still in talks stage but if that venture would to emerge, Deanno wants to be paid more money. It figures that CBS would take care of Deanno if he performed both as a news anchor and weather talent. Especially if that were to include his presence in the evening.

Brian Hackney does the same job but on the weekend and doesn't get any added money. Then again, Hackney is way down the totem pole at PIX working on the cheap and has been downgraded for years. He might be viewed as bright and engaging but he's a virtual retread at 855 Battery.

Paul Deanno
Deanno is seen as an emerging presence on news; if that's the case (and I agree) then why not just 86 him from weather and make him a full-time anchor on news alone. Which seems to be what Deanno might be inferring --here's a rumor: Deanno replaces the forever bitter-beer-face-looking, Alan Martin.

*IT HAS BEEN SAID TIME AND TIME AGAIN, but bears repeating every so often: Darya Folsom continues to EMBARRASS KRON. Sure, KRON has a lot to be embarrassed about but Folsom's continuing circus show in the morning is a sad ass spectacle; she has no shame; she doesn't give a damn about what almost everyone else thinks and she KILLS whatever credibility KRON has by her BS presence on its morning news.

If KRON brass thinks she helps the ratings, they're sadly mistaken. She's in actuality a detriment to the operation and nobody looks at her anymore nor takes her seriously. She's a nothing; a nobody and her boobs have been a non-story for years. The only BOOB that thinks she still got it is her boyfriend/slave master/schophant, Aaron Pero, the News Director that keeps  job because he possesses state secrets and has compromising pictures in a local bank safe. I'm joking on the latter but who knows.

THIS AND THAT

*New 49ers PBP broadcaster, Greg Papa, is great on radio and I like his 95.7FM 'The Game' takes, but it's questionable he'll stay on that show once football season starts; I can't imagine The Game allowing a rival (KNBR) talent on their air but it's just a guess.

Greg Papa
An analysis on Papa doing 49ers: the professional and talented Papa will make the adjustment to broadcasting Niners' football and easy one. Over the years, I've been critical of Papa but I've never questioned his broadcast ability and football acumen. He's damn good. His pivot to the 49ers from twenty years with the Raiders will be unusual and jarring at first but eventually people will get used to his play-by-play. Probably more an adjustment for Niners' fans then Raiders' rooters.

*Speaking of the Raiders while the world awaits their home (before Vegas) next year, where will they be on radio? Hardly a word. They will NOT be on KCBS that's for sure.

*Internal issues galore and a plethora of turmoil inside their respective newsrooms: KTVU and KGO-TV.

*If and when KGO Radio has a new/latest 2019 iteration, both John Rothmann and hanger-on, Ronn Owens will not have any role. Owens has been drifting away on the horrifically awful, "Ronn Owens Report" and Rothmann, whose stock has continued a steady spiral downward has been told he'll have no position there, only as a perpetual fill-in, if at all.

Meanwhile, a HOT RUMOR!! New KGO Radio PD? Hard to believe but word on the street is the PD will be Toonces, The Driving Cat! Wow, now that's some extraordinary depth by the fearless kitty!

  1. Again, best wishes & get-well-soon to Zouves.
Just some more info from my meager internet research. She may have gone to USC but she's from the SF Bay Area & San Mateo County area.
Workers' Comp is a necessary/required cost of doing business and is an insurance which can protect both worker and business. Whether there's an alternate workplace negligence lawsuit forthcoming is unknown but would be good info to report should there later be one, or any other type of lawsuit regarding a high-profile person for that matter

    Good work RL:)

  2. I was going to ask you what happened to Jessica Castro next time you did one of those "Ask Rich" segments. Alexis Smith is fine doing traffic, but out of her depth filling in as an anchor. And Reggie Aqui has gotten more annoying, if that's possible. "Reggie Knows Sports"? Please.

And I don't think Greg Papa is that great a sports broadcaster. Smarmy East Coast shithead. I guess I may be forced to actually listen to the national announcers next season, as much as I like Tim Ryan.

    1. Ever since Reggie started 'knowing sports', all his extemporaneous babble has increased the number of times he or anyone else gets cut off in mid-sentence by the 'hard break'. Oops, I said 'hard', now Reggie's distracted again...

  5. Amazing how Tim Kawakami predicted Papa's move to the 49ers a year in advance!

    1. I don't read The Athletic, but I wonder if Kawakami is ready to or has begun sticking up hard for Derek Carr in his feud with the beyond insufferable Screamin' A. TK would likely be more than happy to provide Carr with fodder against Screamin A.

  6. What I'm hearing is part of Castro's issue is money, but working with the incredibly insecure and super bossy Kristen Sze (New Midday Show) has reached a boiling point. And...it's just too funny that Folsom still wears that cheap ass fake wedding band, and all Pero does in complain about her - - especially Darya's "big-saggers," and how she's always asking him for money. She has no idea how much shit he talks about her behind her back. NONE.

  7. - In between Hahas....as in looking at the most ridiculous Folsom photo I've ever seen....Hahahahaha, while I've never been a Zouves fan, if she can take Circle7 to court and convince the station to remove Trixie for the sake of the entire broadcasting staff, she will have done a service to many a TV News viewer.
    - Hershey's actually sponsored the Bentley before he left KRON? Hope the chocolate company learned from that big mistake.
    - Castro doesn't deserve any raise from KGO-TV, if the poor ratings are any proof.
    - Deanno has earned a raise and then some from PIX. Replacing Allen Martin? Why not? BTW, Deanno watched VDLC anchor solo Wednesday night at 11PM; VDLC seems to be holding her own. Would like to know what PIX's contract negotiations with Glenn are like, and what their plans would be for O'Donnell, no matter how it turns out?
    - KGO Radio's future post-Jack Swanson looking worse & worse. Even the driving cat won't solve this.
    - Might the Raiders do what the A's might do and following various NHL Hockey teams by emphasizing streaming broadcasts? A's Prez Dave Kaval is just as unimpressed with Bay Terrestrial Radio is RL is. You can ask him at A's Fan Fest tomorrow at Jack London Square.
    - As long as each respective network continues to halfass contract negotiations with their lead anchors, internal newsroom turmoil at The Firm and The Circle won't change. Keep exposing the decision makers, RL! Though good luck trying to shame them!

  11. Welcome Back Kristen Sze as top morning news anchor like Laura Garcia. Worst choice was letting Eric and Kristen go, someone must be happy the one stealing their spot is gone. I will boycott their morning news unless Jessica comes back. So hard watching Alexis doing the news.

  12. Natasha Zouves...a terrific example of the Millennial narcissistic era. Thinks she's a lot more important than she is, simply because she can take a good selfie.

  16. Can't help but wondering if the KGO talent will discover they'd lost their jobs the same way Gil Gross did at that other station, turning on the radio one morning and hearing Spanish language sports programming.

  17. About Zouves. She won the Emmy, one clearly campaigned for by KGO 7 ABC. Once getting that award, she sought to use it as a contract negotiation--in my opinion. In all fairness to her, she was brought there (KGO 7 ABC) to be an evening news anchor and was double crossed as was the anchor whose position that she was brought in to replace. That created immediate hostility, aimed at her by KGO 7 ABC veterans--she never recovered from that. Instead of getting the evening news job as promised and publicly announced, she was forced into the low paying morning slot. How incredibly embarrassing that must have been for her, considering that she is from the Bay Area...or nearby. As I understand it, she has had other health issues prior to her fall...and was known for leaving the station early and/or taking days off for health reasons. As a part of that, a veteran female Asian anchor Kristen Sze was said to be clashing with her and giving her trouble. This added to Zouves' problems. She was quite literally afraid to be around the other woman, who she was often asked to work with on-air. That said, I spoke to Zouves online once, and I found her to be incredibly naive...in terms of having a PC SJW virtue signaling view of life. She quite literally has a rose colored glasses view of the world. I simply spoke of my view that women in society, should be more careful when traveling in relation to a story on the subject that she posted. She assumed that to be sexist, although she remained entirely professional in her response, but as I explained--my point is simply realistic. "There are bad people out there," I said. "One must exercise caution." I'm paraphrasing from memory. With that in mind, I think her attitude, which is reflective of most people under 40, may rub her colleagues the wrong way. She is very talented, but to tell the truth...the pressure of the industry can cause a person to retreat from their dreams--especially a kind person, who was raised in a bubble (and isn't street smart). I find it interesting that she and her co-anchors often talked of being incredibly underpaid. I recall one segment, I don't recall if she was there that day...but the anchors were all salivating over $100,000 plus paying manager jobs at In-N-Out. BTW, they were entirely serious. Why do I bring this up? You may notice, many reporters at local news stations have quit their jobs...and have gotten jobs at BART and various other businesses including utility companies as their spokespersons. I used to go to school with one of them (she was one of the first), so I began focusing on this trend many years ago; a trend that is only now increasing. Again, why do I say this? It's about attrition. People like Zouves get tired of all the...on the job pressure...and often fade away through attrition...by taking a job where they don't really have to compete...yet they can earn incredibly high salaries outside of the business. I think Zouves may be headed that way...and honestly, she would be better off. I wish her the best.
