Breaking: Ex-KGO Radio Talker Brian Copeland Sues Cumulus. But Case is Far Different Then Barbieri

Former KGO Radio talk host, Brian Copeland, is suing Cumulus over racial bias and age discrimination. He was subsequently let go.

My immediate reaction: long, long time before Copeland sees a dime, if any. Copeland is looking for Cumulus to settle this suit and pay out a big sum for this to go away. Good luck with that, Copie,.

There is precedent in this situation as former veteran sports talker, Ralph Barbieri, sued the Cloud Company and the suit was settled out of court.

Barbieri was represented by Angela Alioto, who coincidently is representing Copeland.

Barbieri ended up settling for a nice chunk of change although I do not see that ending in this particular lawsuit. Far too many variables.

  1. LOL. No discrimination here, it's simply that he's not a genuine talk show host...almost no one on KGO is.

    1. He's not a genuine black man either, or so he says. He likes Frasier...or something.

  2. I didn’t care for Ralph but he at least had a following. Copeland didn’t. That being said he may secure a nuisance value settlement of < $100k. How long has he been gone, seems like more than a year and statute of limitations is 365 days I thought for EEOC and DFEH

  3. He was let go (lack of talent and listenership) at the end January in 2018 so he got in under the statute.

  4. Let's just call a spade a spade. He only got the job in the first place because he is black. Racist ? ... no ... just the truth.

    1. Brian was hired by Mickey Luckoff I believe, or Jack Swanson he got his show because he was a caller to Ray Taliferro's show in did a hilarious impression of Ray. Brian is very multi talented, wrote a book, has had several one man shows, which has been very successful, has been a stand up comedian. What have you done with our life?

    2. "What have you done with OUR life"??? seriously? If Mr. Copeland is such a great comedian, couldn't he continue to do that? It's a stretch to say that the company which fired everybody , but brought him back and give him a daily show, did so because that hate older, black people. Didn't they hire both of his kids, who are at least half black, for their own jobs? This "genuine" fellow bragged for years about his close friendship with Bill Cosby, until the scandal, and then claimed he barely knew him. Unless there are tapes or witnesses to cumulus management making discriminatory remarks about Mr.Copeland's skin hue or age, there's no case. Cumulus would be wise not to settle this one.

    3. I meant to say what have you done with your life, of course. I stand by my assertion that Brian is multi talented, don't know if comedy is his strongest, but his one man shows ran for years, and I believe still do. I for one liked his show he certainly was a lot better than Ethan Bearman and Chip, although their shows has improved of late. Everyone is one Brian for always playing the race card, but I never found that to be true, he merely saw some issues differently because he was black, and approach the subject from that perspective. He talked about many subject. Dennis Prager certainly talk enough about being Jewish is he playing the "Jew" card?

    4. I agree, he was better than Ethan Bearman, but that's the lowest bar around. He was and is not better than Chip, unchained.

  5. I can see people wanting to pay Angela Alioto to go away and stay gone. But in this case, Copeland was just not popular enough to keep on. He was a bit of a drag, if you really want to know the truth.
People were tiring of him flashing the Race Card every five minutes, and then saying he was not your average black man. Oh Really? The problem was that, yes you were.

    1. 5:17...I'll buy you a beer. I think I listened to him maybe twice many years ago. Once I realized he was just like the columnist Lenord Pitts, another black man forever stuck in the year 1965, I never listened again. Some move on, some never do.

    2. The correct term and the title of Brian's book is "Not a genuine black man". Nor did he flash the race card every 5 minutes, or even every 5 hours. He talked about issues of race, but he also talked politics, local and national, show business, real estate, other issues, I rather enjoyed his show. Do you get upset with Dennis Prager or Michael Medved talking about being Jewish? Or is it just blacks you have a problem with?

    3. > Do you get upset with Dennis Prager or Michael Medved
      > talking about being Jewish? Or is it just blacks you
      > have a problem with?

I'm sick of everyone not letting go with their "ethnic identity" (even though we all shop at the same WalMart and drive the same Toyotas) in this country where "everyone is created equal," so no, it's not just blacks, but to compare the way Medved and others talk about their ethnicity to the way blacks militantly walk around with enormous chips on their shoulders for what their great great great great ancestors suffered is a completely different context. Please don't conflate the two.

    4. I don't think Brian had a chip on his shoulders, he brought up some very legit concern in relation to being black, at times, not every 5 minutes as some commenters seem to think. He did a couple of very interesting shows on Emmett Till and the 16 Baptist Church bombing, both happened during my life time (fifties and sixties) not centuries ago. It is part of US history and why should we not remember it, no matter how unpleasant.

  6. Geez, sue of over losing a PT gig? Karel had more class (apologies for using the words Karel and class in the same sentance) when he was let go,

    1. Now there is a question to ponder, who was better Karel or Copie? “Copie” an attempt at a hipster name for a guy who is anything but,

  7. Don't his Daughter and Son STILL work for the station? He was let go One year ago. I guess the severance ran out. Two year deals are pretty standard.

  8. Please... Everybody is racist. Except blacks, of course.

  9. As Steve Moskowitz says, "Make a deal."

  10. I haven't listened to KGO in so long that I didn't even realize Copeland had been let go! Not surprising that he would sue.....KGO / Cumulus must've seen that coming??

    ReplyDelete
  11. Maybe I'm being naive, but if the station didn't like black people why would they have even hired him in the first place?

  12. Some of the worst racism is in Africa...everyone hates everyone.

  13. I love Brian Copeland. I am a libertarian Republican. I don't agree with most of his politics but I appreciate hearing the other side. He is also a great interviewer, very smart and witty and he has done life-saving work by helping to bring depression out of the closet, both in his plays and his shows. Getting rid of Brian Copeland was another dumb move by Cumulus, which has a history of making very bad decisions when it comes to KGO. The marketplace has punished Cumulus for gutting KGO and it will continue to punish it for getting rid of great hosts like Brian Copeland.

    1. Pimping one's one depression to keep a job and garner sympathy is a con. Most people with a diagnosis of "depression" are not clinically depressed at all. All one does to get that diagnosis is answer one question in the affirmative, whether lying or not, you get scripts for lots of goodies saleable on the black market. There is no blood test, or brainscan that reveals "depression". The question," have you ever thought about killing yourself?". That's your ticket.

    2. Must be time to talk about "being white" because black people seem to think they are the only race that was ever enslaved and oppressed.

    3. 12:03, aka Brian Copeland himself, nice self serving post

  14. Copie should sue the listeners who didn't tune in. That will show them who's boss.

  15. Alioto represented a group of food workers in the East Bay years ago. They walked away with a chunk of change. These workers were the laziest people I have ever witnessed. Charges were made up against the company and they settled. The plant closed down shortly after. Good job Angela!

  16. Lets just sum this up please:

He's an average talk show host in a major market who never did enough to get a full time gig. He's a black man in SF. He didn't even have to be as good as a white guy to get a full time gig and he still never got a gig.

He can get you from the beginning of the show until the end and he's mildly entertaining, but lets just be clear:

He has no job at Cumulus because he's not very good.

If he wanted a full time radio job he could have moved to any market out of the Top 20 and probably found one. But he didn't.

Good bye, Brian Copeland. Stop whining.

  18. I can hear the words which haven't been spoken yet, "Thanks Dad, we were both informed the Company is going in a different direction and our services are no longer needed."

  19. Will his kids get fired now?

    1. Doubt it. I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about working with either of Copeland’s kids.

      Delete
    2. Oh, hell no...if his kids are shown the door for ANY reason it'll be seen as retaliatory (and rightfully so), and there'll be 3 or 4 lawsuits instead of just one...now that I think about it, Copie could've sued specifically so his kids couldn't get fired...if that's the case that's a new level of genius...

      Delete
    3. Please don’t use the words Copeland and genius is the same sentance!

  20. I believe that Cumulus paid him severance and as a condition of doing so had him sign a release saying he wouldn't sue them. If Copeland had signed a release and is now bringing suit he is classless-man, whose word and signature mean nothing. I think the Ogletree law firm represents Cumulus, this matter will be dismissed, and quickly

So you have asked yourself, why file? My guess is to just to try and "make hay" of how the system is rigged against him (race, age and in general). If you want to leave open the possibility of suing don't sign a release! Why would he? Many have posted above he's "highly successful" and shouldn't need the $. Two possibilities. One, he does need the $ and two, the KGO gig constituted a major venue from him to advertise for free his other endeavors (one man plays. stand-up comedy, his book, etc.)
