Another TV News Person Splits for PIO Gig; Matt Keller Leaving KGO-TV for Southbay PR Position

Matt Keller leaving KGO for Southbay PIO gig
Matt Keller is leaving KGO-TV (ABC7) which isn't that big a deal these days; other anchors and reporters are splitting TV for PIO (Public Info officers) like this guy, and this guy too, Robert Lyles.

The latest? Yeah, Keller himself.

The inside dope as told to me from a Circle7 source:

"He was promised more anchoring than he actually got; when he didn't get what he was promised, he looked for something outside the TV News biz."

And is now the latest to leave TV News and become a PR flack. The money is sometimes better and so is the security.

  1. Too bad Matt's leaving. As an anchor he is better than Reggie Aqui.

  2. Best of all he's away from Trixie.

For that alone most would take a cut in pay!

  3. Nobody watches TV anymore like they used to. Matt is smart to go for a better paying gig with more security and likely less stress.

  4. Does John Sasaki earn more for the dilapidated Oakland School District than he did as a reporter for KTVU Fox 2?

    1. Probably. Unless you're a star anchor, you don't get paid that much in TV news these days.

    2. According to Transparent California, in 2016 Sasaki was making $58K in pay and bennies working for Oakland schools. That's probably about a third or half of his TV salary, give or take.

  5. As an anchor and reporter I thought Matt had a good delivery, rarely made mistakes, stayed objective overall but showed proper emotion when warranted. So, naturally, Trixie couldn't have someone like that read the teleprompter! Good for Matt, he deserves better.

So, who will fill his spot at ABC?

  6. People cross from journalism to PR all the time and have for years. Journalism lives on.

Why do people cross the road? Very simple. Sometimes, more money. All the time, a more predictable life. Monday through Friday days. Holidays off.

  7. Good for him! More are seriously unhappy, and looking to get out. Despite the decent ratings, (so skewed due to low sample size due to dwindling TV viewership) KGO-TV is in real trouble. Nobody is happy, but those in control, bullying everyone else. Something's gotta give - that organizations dysfunction is only slightly topped by lowly KRON.

  8. Hi Rich: You're absolutely right when you state "the money is sometimes better & so is the security." 2 Specific examples: Henry Wofford Long-time Bay Area Sports Reporter/Anchor formerly of CSN Bay Area & briefly with KRON 4 was hired 6 months ago as PIO for the Napa County Sheriff's Office despite having no Actual Hard News background. David Stevenson 10 year (2005-2015) KTVU GA Reporter was hired in May 2015 as Media Spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Dept. According to the Transparent CA Website which lists the salaries & benefits of all CA Government employees in 2018 alone David Stevenson's salary was almost $176,000.00 a year a considerable jump from his previous salary as a KTVU GA Reporter. Keep up the Great Work Rich!

  10. Matt Keller was one of the better Reporter/Anchors in the Bay Area. It is too bad he got passed over for promotion. I thought maybe when the big honcho from NY moved out here that we might see some positive changes. Wrong again! Good luck Matt Keller!
