KGO Goes To Cumulus Boss to Get Cash for its Latest News-Talk Iteration

The SF BRASS that run KGO radio went directly to Cumulus Boss, Mary Berner, for the cash infusion that is the source for the Bay Area News-Talk Radio station that began its latest format revamp a week ago Monday.

Cumulus reported a modest 5.2 percent uptake in revenue in the 4th quarter. Its overall revenue growth continues to be stagnant and despite future political ads stemming from an election next year, there is little hope the Cloud Company has long term financial health..

  1. I've listened to Mark Thompson...He is not a good choice for radio. Pat and John sound as good as ever. I wish they would have more later night and overnight shows worth listening to.

    1. Not a fan of Mark Thompson, however I think this is his second week and he already sounds better than he did his first week, not that is saying much, hopefully he will continue to improve. Pat and John are great, especially John he has lots of followers, even people who disagree with him. I too wish the line up was a little different, mostly for selfish reasons, I commute from Concord to Palo Alto, and work most days from 1 p.m. to 9:30, would love to be able to hear John on the way home and also after I get home. Right not, most night I listen to the podcast of John from the day before in my car. The only 2 shows that are on that time of the night that I might listen to is John Batchelor and Hugh Hewitt, and it all depends on their subject, I prefer John.

  2. Bankruptcy Queen Mary Berner is so proud of her meager profit despite the millions of dollars in debt magically erased in Chapter 11. Cumulus wanted a CEO, the wound up with the Reader's Digest version.

    1. Readers digest version; har har har. Mary Berner inherited a mess she did not create; the Dickeys sacked and looted Susquehanna (the company that made KFOG), ABC Radio, and Westwood One and left with most of the cash and valuables; Mary has done better than I would have guessed. She's not perfect, but the improvement in how the business is run is tangible, and the company is attempting to at least spiral upward.

  3. Cumulus will go into Chapter 11 AGAIN according to the REAL radio Trades. Right now they are trying to sell Westwood One. They just sold WPLJ in NY...All the money went to the creditors from the first Bankruptcy...So will the Westwood One proceeds if they can find someone to by it. I feel like Cumulus SF is about 8 years late on a KGO resurrection.

  4. .... the 810 horse has been dead for years. They can revamp it a million times over with just as many formats and it will never be in the same zip code as KGO pre 2011 !!

  7. In 2011 810 am wasn't broken, from then till today they're still trying to fix it. Funny how that works.

  8. Love the "new" KGO. The only thing spoiling the new format is chip frankli n and his screeching side kick. Get rid of them and the weekday radio would be EXCELLENT. I turn the channel when chip and his goal pal come on.
