At KPIX, Maybe There is Something in the Water

WEDNESDAY OPEN

Maybe there really is something in the water--the joke at KPIX is, "who's next to go?"

Andria Borba, the star reporter, has been away from PIX for almost six months now; she's been battling severe work overload and is still worn out. Her return is doubtful.

Even with all those reasons, (which are legit) there's a feeling by some at 855 Battery that she's more drama than personal conflict...like the others.

Veronica De La Cruz finally left the premises --spraking of drama, but her story came out of the blue.

Paul Deannu, a top-notch weather anchor suddenly one day decided he would take a hike to Chicago. Which, from a market standpoint, is fine, but freezing as all get-go. He's outta Chicago but nowhere near CBS-SF .

You know, sort of, about Dennis O'Donnell, courtesy, moi.

I haven't even mentioned the behind-the-scenes people.

  1. KPIX is where the carnival barkers at KCBS steal news reports from.
A day later (old news) anything & everything to keep the shit-show moving.
Bringing you the "BS" in KCBS

  3. And they put someone like Peck back on a double shift on weekends. But now it sounds like these past 2 Sundays he was working double shifts due to the weather (likely he stayed overnight) but on Sunday evening either had the same tie or came in with a different colored tie.

And he wasn’t there this past Monday or Tuesday at all at noon or 3pm, taken back by Burch and Heggen respectively.

Surprising to hear about Borba, she generally a very versatile anchor and reporter. I can imagine the work-life balance is toxic there and unlike other stations they do not have enough of everyone in every kind of department like other stations would.

  4. Drama attracts drama. Folks searching for greener pastures, are finding out that all of them are nothing more than decorative landfills. You can run, but you can't hide from the stench emanating from this country right now. The angst is palpable!

  5. I'm a little puzzled over all this Borba drama. I mean, she was a beat reporter. Sure there's stress, but she's not in Afghanistan. Reporters covered World War II—London during the blitz and all that—and they didn't go crazy afterwards or have PTSD. Have we become a nation of cream puffs?

  6. Very surprised someone in the East Coast will hire VDLC when all viewers in the West Coast reading about her storiesssss knows she love to use personal or medical reasons to KPIX and behind everyone back, she is pregnant due to family or health manner and never show up. This shows all tv station should do a serious background check on all staffs before hiring. KPIX needs a new makeover for sure, staffs playing hookey never stay bye to the viewers and for sure more and more staffs claiming sick, stress, mental, what so ever and never come back.

  7. KPIX is slowly becoming a "dumpster" fire like KGO TV was back in the early to mid 90's

    1. Wait till Brian Hackney retires…for anchoring they can replace him with someone but for weather that becomes a challenge.

Even though KTVU is definitely not such a good station at least in some departments they are adequately staffed. Same with KNTV (Cintia Pimental has been working double shifts in place of Mayeda).

  8. Does anyone even watch local TV news anymore? I turned on one of the local stations the other night and thought I was watching a TV news show Fenn Fresno!!

  9. Guess who filled in for Burch today (and likely tomorrow)? Our good old friend Mary Lee. While Burch is great, Mary has much more energy while giving the forecast in a straightforward, direct way.

This was after last night when Peck was filling in for Paul. Sounds like both Jessica & Paul will be out rest of this week as Mary is filling in as per her Twitter & Peck likely during the afternoon. Good not to see Hackney fill in for Paul’s birthday.

Peck gave just as good of an explanation as Heggen on the recent weird weather events. I know he’s a little jerky but he did a great job referencing Sara’s video and he seemed to be comfortable on the evening show.

    1. How Peck could concentrate when Sara was standing next to him in those leather pants is a mystery to me.

    2. Peck doesn't seem to take much of Sara's BS and just ignores it unless it's related to the weather. Heggen has somehow managed with it, I guess there's one good thing about Heggen, at least he strikes up the conversation a bit more.

But he was comfortable enough on all other broadcasts. It's also confirmed on Twitter that Mary Lee is filling in tomorrow for Jessica, but there's one little doubt in that regard...is she doing the fill-in from home? Unlike when Peck and Burch are actually in the studio, Amanda/Gianna were talking to her via another TV screen that they use to talk to other reporters/folks.

    3. Okay I found out how Mary did it...She mentioned that she did it from her garage, so a nice convenience for her filling in. Hope to see her filling in every once in a while.

  10. It was nice to see Peck fill in for a Friday night and for a change not see casual Paul Heggen in jeans and a badly matching blazer on a Friday. Peck did a great job on the evening weeknight shift, broke down the recent weather events well and even gave us a sense of attention & awareness with some good personality.

Some minor hiccups with Peck besides his ego - He wore the same tie color on Thurs & Fri. Shows the long range forecast but no bar form of rain chances (Heggen, Burch and even Hackney do that but not him or Lee). Unless the weather is super impactful, he did not even show the Sierra weather neither did Mary Lee (Burch & Heggen both do this), even though the forecast seems to be some evening snow. At the same time I’m kind of glad because I had to cancel the trip due to an event I am attending.

Mary Lee on the other hand covered the forecast nicely but not as verbose as Peck and was straightforward on the details.

I found out the reason for Burch’s absence is due to a 4-day drill duty she had to go for. Heard she is also going to be overseas next month so I would be surprised if Mary fills in…sounds like a sign that they want to stave Hackney off the weather side & let the other meteorologists fill in. On another hand at least she can do it from home so that still gives some adequate coverage.

I will report back Saturday afternoon if I find in my DVR that Peck is doing his live weather and conversating with Devin or doing what he has done for several pleasant Sundays (not showing live views). This is the first time as Heggen has done this for a while.

  11. Yes without any question Peck was doing Saturday mornings in his Friday casual but no interaction with Devin. Better than seeing Heggen in casual attire to start out a weekend.

  12. Heggen has taken to a suit and tie more often lately instead of the jacket, open shirt, and jeans he'd been wearing that made him look like he was the host of a Fort Worth insurance-office Friday barbecue. Yamamoto still seems to me to have all the presence of a college- journalism student intern. Donchey is ... I dunno...

  13. Darren Peck is still filling in for Paul tonight. Hopefully Heggen will be back tomorrow.

I don’t know if it’s just me but on tonight’s 5pm newscast, around 5:15pm, I had a hard time following his flow. It was too slow & he took minutes to get straight into the details. I almost got bored and nearly fell asleep.

Honestly, in my opinion, Burch, Lee, and Heggen have a much better flow of explaining the weather in less time. I’m sure the same with Hackney but he often leaves out some important points and unfortunately does not know when to declare a First Alert Weather Day…Peck & Heggen have done this well especially during holiday week when Peck was filling in during the evenings.
