Exclusive: The Real Reason Andria Borba Has Been MIA at KPIX: Massive Burnout

Andria Borba has been AWAY from the KPIX, (CBS News Bay Area) news domain for quite an extended time--months. At first, I told you about her 'bout with an unknown medical issue. Now comes word, via a PIX source of a more worrisome reason.

Borba, says my contact, "is plain worn out; she's tired, exhausted, it's complete burnout."

Indeed, Borba has been under emotional turbulence carrying the load as the leader of a newsroom in dire straits. That may have hastened her own mehtal state and brought about an extended burden, not just to continue her spirited reporting but allow others to apply the same approach.

"She has an enormous workload, " added a PIX contact. "They depend on her to keep up the pace and it resulted in her just not being able to keep up. She's exhausted."

All this comes at a time KPIX, part of the CBS O and O stations, is re-branding and concentrating on a new look and style for its newscasts, especially at 11 PM.

Borba, a Modesto native who's been at PIX since 2013, has drawn industry recognition for her passionate, albeit quirky, style. She is known to take her gig very seriously and often works overtime to make sure stories were covered from every end.

It's that passion that may have accelerated her present set of circumstances. I expect her to be back relatively soon, just a hunch.

  1. Perfectionism is a trait that makes life an endless report card on accomplishments or looks. It will break you. You can't do all of the heavy lifting yourself, nor should you. It also shields incompetence when it should be on full display.

  2. I can see where the good ones, that have to carry the others get burned out...I like Andrea and hope she gets through all this....jf

  3. Andrea Borba just need not to do so much. She is good reporter. She reminds of a reporter on abc7 Cecilia Vega when she started out and now Vega is on a national level at CBS News as a 60 Minutes correspondent...

    1. Cecilia is with ABC News not CBS.

    2. It was announced earlier today that Cecilia Vega is leaving ABC to join 60 Minutes as a correspondent. I remember her as a reporter for The Press Democrat here in Santa Rosa before she went to The Chronicle, and then ABC7.

  4. I for one love her quirky style. She's not a cookie cutter reporter, a hairdo with a stick mike. I hope she is able to return.

  5. When was news reporting not stressful? Software developers often work 60 hours per week, or more. 100 hours isn't uncommon. Brain surgeons perform 16-hour operations. Long work hours are normal. Is she married or does she have young children? Anyway, good luck to her.

    1. I used to be a software developer who worked at both small startups and giant corporations. The idea that they often work 60-100 hours a week is a myth.

    2. My son is a software developer. 60-100 hours a week?? Hell, more like per MONTH. He can work from his home most days--and his job & office environment is most definitely low-key/"chill."

    3. I am too also a software developer and prior to that was doing engineering & support work. The work/life balance wasn’t always great in my last job, only very very rarely I would overwork unless it involved Business coordination for month end & year end work & upgrades/migration. I wasn’t paid for overtime but that time while I wasn’t overworked, I couldn’t say no because I wanted to start somewhere and get experience.

This job I’ve been in since late 2021 has a better work-life balance and with the work I do, I don’t work more than 6-7 hrs a day and they don’t bother as long as you are reachable & work is getting done. Better work-life balance & I can actually go for a walk on sunny evenings & can actually enjoy weekends, holidays and vacations without the thought of work (you won’t get calls or disturbed during pto and end of the year you are on a shutdown). Not the case in my last job where they would call you even if you are on leave.

More like I work 30 hours a week (120 hrs a month). It is different for everyone, dba’s won’t have this same leverage

  6. That emotional turbulence was reflected in some of her social media posts. She may also have a preexisting physiological condition or conditions, that has/have been significantly exacerbated by the stress and overwork.

Irrespective of the assessments of her performance and presence as a reporter, the respect and recognition that she has garnered/earned, and her passion for her career, she may want to consider transitioning into a less intense and stressful line of work. Ultimately. one's health is paramount.

Take care and get well soon, Andria.

  7. The 11PM news on weeknights & weekends are totally different. I like the weekend version better where they just use the Evening Edition music.

Can’t they just keep the 11PM weeknight news as just Evening Edition just like the way they have Afternoon Edition at noon & Morning Edition everyday?

It doesn’t need to be a late news show dedicated to just some anchor. And don’t get me started on Donchey’s dress last night, oh God!

But on Andria Borba, she is a great reporter no doubt and love her style. Sorry to hear that about her. If she does come back, she would be good as an anchor on the weeknight 11PM PIX news. She did sub for Devin on some weekend mornings and did a great job.

  8. Don’t forget Andria & Darren Peck know each other really well. I think it was in 2011 or 2012 at which one point they worked together at FOX40 at Sacramento

  9. Andria is very talented and she seems like a good person that is extremely hard-working and goes the extra mile!! However, I didn’t realize she’s been there since 2013. If she’s been there 10 years and she’s still working as a field reporter, maybe it’s time to look elsewhere. What’s the point of dealing with this much stress and letting it hurt you mentally when she hasn’t been promoted as a lead anchor. Sounds like she’s the one doing all the work..but at what cost?!? Anyone else would have left by now!! Not sure what’s holding her back from looking elsewhere and going somewhere that will utilize her talents, but I hope KPIX appreciates her, and hope she realizes there are other markets and stations where she could be a Star!!

    1. Good question. And I do remember on a few of her field reporting occasions like Christmas 2020 when there was rain & the evening newscasts were done by Brian Hackney & Juliette Goodrich (who were also there on the weekend) & Paul Heggen was there doing the weather on Christmas night that Andria really mentioned that she wished to be in the studio instead. Brian Hackney was like your shift’s almost over.

Why can’t Andria & Sara swap positions? If anything Sara should go back to it & the 11PM news should be Andria Borba’s show (plus any required points she needs to fill in). She is way better than Donchey any day. Either her or Betty Yu should be doing it because the 11PM news at certain times is not so good.

  10. What was the activity that "wore her out"?

  11. Not about Andrea, but I'd just like to say that I find KPIX's new graphics to be horrible. They look like they're from 10 years ago, especially with the branding graphics taking up so much space on the screen. And I thought tickers died out years ago? Those are very distracting, especially when they repeat the same five headlines over and over.

    1. Somehow I’m not paying attention to the tickers but in the old version you could see cities for weather. I think they were not always accurate or some off by a day in terms of what day it would actually rain.

I don’t see anything wrong with the graphics. Only thing I see wrong is KPIX still using tidbits of CBS local enforcer music like at the end of Devin’s 7AM Saturday newscast or the 5PM news on weekends closing or the 3PM weekday news rejoins. If the idea is to have the graphics and not have enforcer tidbits, then don’t have it and keep the This-is-CBS music.

    2. Standardized O&O graphics have been the way of things for a long time, but CBS' making local newscasts exact replicas of the CBS News streaming site is a little extreme maybe. I do like the "deconstructed eye" motif and font, but the L3s are weak, too thin, too plain. The "Enforcer" music isn't the loss at KPIX that it is in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. where it's been around for decades. Being old fashioned, I lament the abandoning of channel numbers, and the old Westinghouse "5."

    3. The giant KPIX-in-a-box is a poor substitute for a real logo, and takes up a lot of screen real estate that could be showing, oh, I don't know, maybe the height of Sara Donkey's heels.

    1. Exactly!!!! Apparently she couldn’t handle the stress of doing 2-3 field reports daily.
It’s not burn out. It’s someone who can’t handle any degree of pressure or responsibility.

She’s single with no children and no other jobs or significant ventures or responsibilities that would cause this dramatic degree of ‘burn out.’

Time for Borba to put down the cheeseburgers and enter the real world.

  13. 10 years and still a field reporter? She's been praised and recognized in the industry and still doesn't have an in-studio time slot? KPIX is wasting this woman's talents, her prime years, and compromising her health. Maybe she's resigned herself to the fact that this is the highest level she will reach in her career, but it sucks she's suffering from burnout and carrying the workload for others. Who in their right mind, would want to do this at work, only to see others get ahead of her? It's such BS. KPIX brings in new in-studio reporters and lead anchors, only to see her still out in the field? Hope she heals and comes back soon, but hope she realizes that there are other opportunities for a reporter of her talent outside of KPIX and San Francisco..without having to deal with all this stress and burden to her mental health!! Good luck Andria!!

  14. The only part of the 11pm KPIX news that I see is that final minute or two when my DVR starts recording the Colbert Late Show early. That goofy little coffee klatch yuk-it-up at the round CBS eye table is phony and banal, with all the credibility of a Larkfield-Wikiup Benihana. If that segment is representative of the entire newscast, KPIX would be better off finding another syndicated snarky Judge show to run at 11. That'd probably be a boon to their budget as well as their late night ratings.
