SF Press Embarrassing Lack of Reporting in Jeff Adachi Death; Wednesday Open

THE MYSTERY OF JEFF ADACHI; WHERE'S THE REPORTING?

Jeff Adachi, the former Public Defender of SF, died the other week under mysterious circumstances. His memorial service was Monday

You would think, in a city where too many times, a cause of death is undetermined and therefore, conspiracies abound.

And boy have conspiracies been abound in the Adachi case yet no one, no.one. has bothered to investigate the circumstances surrounding Adachi; the evening he died; the mystery woman who was with him (not his wife) and her whereabouts; the conduct of the police and how they handled the crime scene; crime scene?

Yeah, what the city officials first said was a crime scene before a voice in the SFPD PI division said, "there is no evidence of 'foul play'". Really? Then why were the cops knocking on the door, loudly, and shouting, "This is the police! Open up!" at the Telegraph Hill residence that was set up for Adachi's weekend the night he died. We still don't know why the cops were screaming at his doorstep. Wouldn't some reporter, TV/radio/newspaper, want to investigate?

There's more.

Who was the woman that was with Adachi and why did she suddenly disappear into the night, her whereabouts unknown to this date. I talked to an ex-police source who told me that the woman was from South America and went by the name, "Katarina" --presumably, she was a highline hooker. Supposedly, the cops know this yet we still have no idea whether she was involved in Adachi's death. One would think logically if a big city's Public Defender died under mysterious circumstances, some one would get to the bottom of it.

Dan Noyes of KGO-TV interviewed a woman who gave keys to Adachi on Telegraph Place for his rendezvous but that's about it.

"He died of an apparent heart attack," said a local radio reporter. Really, I haven't heard anything official. In fact, I've heard nothing official about Adachi's death but the cops didn't like him; did someone in the local press investigate the PD and their handling of the crime scene in Telegraph Hill where Adachi died? Hello, anyone home?

Phil Matier has been mum; then again, the Chronicle long ago gave up its investigative reporting to concentrate more on real estate pictures and where to get the best burrito in town.

A controversial figure like Adachi and his mystery lady not his wife collapses and dies? Eh, who cares!

Oh well.

The Dysfunction that is KPIX; Watts' Leaving Further Muddies 855 Battery; Sweeps Makes It Worse; KCBS Yappers Mary Lee and Hodousek Torture Chamber; Schulman/Chronicle Steal From Me; KTVU's Gomez Non-Street Savvy; Katsuyama Screams at SF Fire Scene; Gonzales and King Factoid; Thursday 415 Media

Image result for kpix building san francisco "THE ONLY FUNCTION HERE IS DYSFUNCTION." That from one of the growing dissatisfied staffers at KPIX --where incoherence and incompetence rules the day.

To emphasize the current disarray, PIX just lost Julie Watts to their CBS counterpart in Sacramento. There are more moves from Pixies on the way, just in time for February Sweeps. How timely.

Watts wasn't one of KPIX's star players but she was big enough to warrant a lot of chatter last (Wednesday) night amongst some of the local CBS' most influential people, both on and off the air. One management figure tried to spin the Watts' move as simply a colleague "not leaving; instead just 'staying in the CBS family in Sacramento'". Yeah right, what a completely, utter sense of bullshit. And that's exactly how it was received by the rank and file.

As I've stated countless times, KPIX has NO IDENTITY. Very little leadership too. Constant conflict is not a help, particularly in the morning. Growing dissatisfaction and lack of morale is PIX's only consistent virtue.  It's a good thing the station is owned by deep pockets CBS but that's hardly a booster inside the building at 855 Battery.

Watts herself was mostly disliked by a majority of the staff --this incident especially but she was high profile enough to garner industry respect and seven Emmys too. Leaving the Bay Area for Sacramento is not that uncommon these days with the locals eyeing its relative affordability especially real estate. That said, Watts decision to leave SF and go up north primarily because she hated PIX' direction and wanted more investigative reporting makes Channel 5 look bad. Looks can be deceiving only in this case it is absolutely true and for PIX, a bad omen. Trust me.

Mary Lee

*This would be real torture: Put KCBS reporter, Carrie Hodousek and morning weather anchor, Mary Lee, in the same room together. The endless shrieking would be unbearable. Lee sounds exactly like Hodousek or is it the other way around? Either way, the shrieking violets cause eternal ear damage.

*Please, I could care less that some nobody on the night shift on KNBR was given a pink slip. I don't listen to that garbage unless there's some CBS Sports Radio content on the air but that too can be painful.

*Memo to Hank Schulman of the Chronicle: It was 415 Media that reported first, this news.

Schulman stealing from me, imagine that. Damn bloggers!

Alyana Gomez
*It was a pleasant sight viewing Alyana Gomez reporting live from the scene of that big fire in SF on Wednesday --too bad Gomez mispronounced several city street names and kept referring to "Geary Street" --locals know it as "Geary Boulevard." Trivial? No, because it's called knowing your geography and city. How damn irritating but that's just me. I would hope and prefer as gorgeous and infinitely watchable Gomez is, it would help if her street savvy were genuine.

*Then there's  Jana Katsuyama on the scene who appeared to think literally screaming and yelling would heighten the story when it was stated from the beginning that no one was hurt or injured or killed, thank god, only buildings were destroyed.

Jana Katsuyama
Katsuyama's loud outbursts did nothing to inform the viewers on KTVU but only reinforces how bad a reporter she is and why KTVU management thinks she's talented is beyond me. Maybe mediocrity rules the day and this is the best they got which apparently it is and gosh does that nauseate me.

*Between the "flipping houses" moron and "Petersen Dean" jerkoff, my has AM Radio become such a mess.

*If Roberta Gonzales truly wanted to come back to KPIX, she could. Her problem, sorta like Dana King, is that both left wanting to pursue their own independence, in King's case, a desire to become an artist; in Roberta's case to become her own broadcast boss. Problem is, both are not earning anywhere near what they got at PIX; not that the money was great but it was far more then they're making now. Yeah, money isn't everything but it's damn near close.

Former Chronicle/KGO-TV Reporter/Anchor Cecilia Vega Hits Bigtime; Named Weekend Co-Anchor of World News Tonight

I'm a big fan of Cecilia Vega--you may remember she was a reporter for the SF Chronicle--then marched out of newspapers direct to KGO-TV before becoming a legitimate newswoman superstar and got a gig at ABC News in LA.

Now, she's really hit the career jackpot.

Vega and Tom Llamas are the new weekend anchors for ABC's "World News Tonight" broadcasts.

ABC made the announcement today. (Monday) They've been doing fill-in duty on the broadcasts since the previous weekend anchor, David Muir, took over on weekdays last September.

KNBR Cleans Clock In September; KCBS/KOIT Hold Serve; SF Radio Ratings

KNBR VAULTS INTO #1 --KCBS HOLDS SERVE; KGO MODEST JUMP; THE GAME FLATLINES

Here's the full numbers.

Bloomberg Bay Area 960 Debuts; Greg Jarrett Offers Smooth Drivetime Anchor; Danos 'Fill-In' Status At KCBS; Fox Takes Over KTVU Oct 16; Monday Coffee Opener

'Bloomberg 960 SF" debuted this morning and if you like business-central radio then you'll be in heaven. It is mostly news, traffic, and business interviews concentrating on Silicon Valley and Wall Street.

Ex-KGO Radio tonsil, Greg Jarrett, conducted the first morning-drive anchoring and provided a steady if not spectacular style.

"Bay Area Business" is the outcue Bloomberg is using with traffic snippets from Larry Olsen. It is blended in with its other bureaus in NY and Boston. The "Bloomberg Bay Area Business Report" is centered among the local programming although ironically, the "local" story was reported by a NY reporter, Charlie Pellet.

This is not riveting radio in any sense of the word; it's mostly a lot of business, stocks, trends, dividend potpourri but that's precisely what Bloomberg Radio is counting on and with their deep financial pockets Bloomberg will be around the Bay Area airwaves for a while.

*Dean Danos, who got dumped from overnight KCBS because somebody high up, (not ND, Ed Cavagnaro), thought he sounded like a "DJ" during the Napa quake, (huh?), is probably destined for fill-in work. He's not thrilled and talked to the union. Most of the station staff was "shocked" over Danos' firing, including the Assistant ND, Jane McMillan, who is working to get the situation resolved.

*Fox Network takes over KTVU on October 16 --you, the viewer, will notice very little at first. Things will be business as usual until the new GM from Boston arrives, then it's mystery time but usually the first thing these guys do is to chop a little, replace and mix and match.

Dana King Happy With Life; Former KPIX Anchor Is Serious About Her Political Run In Oakland; Friday First Take

Dana King was on my mind recently; can't believe it's been nearly two years since the talented and beautiful King left KPIX, retired, and chose to begin a life of art and politics. Politics?

King is running for city council in Oakland, where she lives near Lake Merritt.

I asked King on my KSCO Radio Show on Tuesday why politics. I mean the volatility and all. She's supposed to be retired, right.

"Well, I want to help out my community. I think I can make a difference,"says King who was working late into the evening manning phone banks at her campaign office. This is serious business for Dana, not some publicity stunt.

As I noted the other day, King sounded at peace and relieved to be out of the local TV news business.

Exclusive: Bloomberg Radio Acquires Mystery SF Radio Station; Ex-KGO Newsman Greg Jarrett Coming Back To Bay Area

Greg Jarrett coming back to SF Radio
JARRETT BACK ON SF AIRWAVES --BLOOMBERG RADIO TO SF --AQUIRES BAY AREA RADIO STATION!

I've been receiving lots of tips on Bloomberg Radio possibly coming to SF Bay Area Radio armed with a lot of homegrown talent.

Today, now, I contacted ex-KGO Radio news anchor, Greg Jarrett, (not the Fox News guy), and he confirmed to me he's coming back to San Francisco and will be on a, as of yet, unknown,  Bloomberg station. (KSFO? KFRC? FM?)

"I love San Francisco and miss the Bay Area--I'll be back on 'within six weeks on drivetime,'" said Jarrett via phone.

Jarrett worked for current KGO Opps Mgr, Kevin Metheny and is a close ally. Both worked together in Chicago. Jarrett did PM drive for years on the old KGO.

I asked Jarrett if he knew what Bay Area radio station Bloomberg was acquiring --he would not comment but we'll know soon.

This is very interesting to say the least.

NightBeat or 'Nightmare'? Early Spin Grim on KPIX 10 PM CW Newscast

Meet-Veronica_nightbeat-web
*It's only been three days, but "seems like a year."

*KPIX staffer: "We have a lot of work to do."

*"Too many gimmicks", laments another.

*Nightbeat is too early to write off and PIX, good or bad, will eventually tweak it.

And it does need tweaking by God.

Enough, for instance, of two-minute slicks--stick to basics and don't be so cute. And please, mucho softo on the social media minutia --KISS: Keep it short and simple.

Veronica: Less urgency, more relaxed, just an opinion ...

NBC Bay Area Anchor Janelle Wang on Medical Leave

NBC Bay Area anchor, Janelle Wang, has been off the air for several weeks and people have been asking me if there's something up.

Wang is on medical leave and due to be back on the station later in the month.

I was told she's OK and that her condition was nothing serious. "She'll be back soon--she's a trouper", said a broadcast source familiar with the situation.

On a Friday PM Bender Ender When You've Been Working Hard and are Hungrier Than Shit Don't Underestimate the Power of Tommy's Joynt

It can be addictive.

It also has the best Hoffbrau food in the Bay Area and its multiple beers on tap is second to none.

Tommy's Joynt.

If you have 10 bucks in your pocket you can eat good there.

The hot turkey sandwich and corned-beef is the best.

And they're open every day and serve late. And no, I don't get free meals.
