America's Cup Media Meltdown; KPIX/KTVU Musings; KRON's Bennett Reality Check; Carolyn Tyler and KGO; Sinkovitz back at KRON makes Perfect Sense; Punch-Drunk Media Sunday

**The America's Cup trials begin on the 4th of July and about five people are excited. NBC, I'm sure, had grand visions of chamber-of-commerce video images of the Golden Gate Bridge and Coit Tower with a tablespoon full of sailboats from around the world on the bay.

Now they'll get a bunch of millionaires yukking it up at Pier 23 and Larry Ellison sipping Dom with his 16 girlfriends. Polo Shirt alert!

**BART may or may not strike Monday at midnight. Good. At least it'll allow the local TV minions to offer alternatives to the relentless 5000 post-mortems from the Pride parade.

**Add BART labor question: given the fact that many people are talking off days this week with the holiday on Thursday, why would BART workers strike this week? Was a week later off the memo pad? The password is leverage.

**One of these days I'm going to announce to the world that a very, very big radio frequency that has legendary call letters will be scooped up by a Santa Cruz broadcast/business impresario who thinks I'm the next Howard Stern and I do approve of this message. (The plot does indeed thicken--wink, wink).

**It's not that the paranoia at KPIX is that unusual; that's a common deal at most big-market TV stations. It's that the star talent that the big cheeses think are stars are not their part of the team. That type of management doesn't lead to harmony in the building nor in the ratings. Take care of the people who bring in viewers and don't kowtow to your drinking buddies at the Old Ship.

**Speaking of which, KTVU, the station of the year, courtesy of some industry fishwrap, has gigantic morale issues, notably its sports dept. where too much gossip and hard feelings over who makes the most money.

**KRON Weather chick alert: Jacqueline Bennett, you're not Christina Loren nor even close to Evelyn Taft. You scowl a lot and look like a Fresno Walmart cosmetics clerk. Get a dose of humility and drink a pint of Guinness. It couldn't hurt.

**Speaking of KRON, I've come to the conclusion that just as a mini-tranquility had permeated the 1001 Van Ness building, a new round of shoutfests erupted among the news managers and news reporters and newsroom staff. They just can't stand peace and quiet.

**I don't have an obsession of Gary Radnich; it's just when he mentions me either directly, (rare), or indirectly, (more common), I will not sit idly by and let him get away with it. The prima donna that preaches not to mess with family has messed with me. The operative word is: hypocrite.

**Even if she won't admit it, I will: Carolyn Tyler should have a more prominent role at KGO-TV. She's an underrated news anchor and a damn good reporter. The fact that she doesn't look like Soledad O'Brien is why she's constantly being portrayed by a few insiders as "not a weeknight presence" is total bullshit. I said that, quote me.

**The fact that Michael Savage is worth $200 million, give or take a few million, has some Bay Area broadcast people and listeners, up in arms. Hey, it's only money.

**If KRON hired back Tom Sinkovitz, they'd immediately move the needle and have instantaneous buzz. Not only would he'd love to come back, he'd galvanize the place and bring in some much-needed energy to a place that could use it.

**Add KRON: NBC should have just bit its tongue and buy KRON from Young. It made too much sense on a lot of fronts thereby making it impossible to happen.

**Jessica Aquirre: I like you, Jess, just what's up with all the facial contortions? You're starting to scare the shit out of me.

**Brian Hackney used to be a quality news reader, a professional and a damn good weather and science anchor/reporter, and still is. But, yo Brian, you take yourself way too seriously. If you keep it up you're gonna make Allen Martin seem like Milt Kahn.

**The new Jannelle Wang: still hot, much better ad-libber and downright capable anchor holding her own with Raj Mathai.

**I love it: The local station PR people that can't stand me but continue to send me propaganda via my e-mail box. I'm just damn thrilled.

**This little blog is nearing the 6 Million page views after only five years in the cyber bar. Not bad considering the fact that everyone under the sun thought it was destined for the black hole early on. And oh, by the way, damn right I ask for donations. If KQED, a $300M operation that has daily pledge/donation breaks, then I damn well can and will ask for contributions. Sure, I don't have Masterpiece Theatre but then again, considering my body of work, plenty of drama. It takes time and money to bring you this wonderful tapestry so yeah, 5 bucks isn't gonna kill you.

Howard Stern and Larry King doing Howard Stern and Larry King; Quick Saturday Snippet

My friend Mort Lanzberg forwarded me this clip of Howard Stern talking to Larry King.

I'll admit it: I sort of miss Larry because I have never warmed to Piers Morgan. Morgan reminds me of of David Frost-lite. And his ratings are terrible. Lower than King too. Maybe it's just CNN.

You know who would have been a terrific replacement for Larry? Howard Stern. Think about it for the moment. Stern is funny, OK maybe a little dour with bathroom humor but Stern is one helluva interviewer.

What Every Bay Area TV News Station Will Ask, Sheepishly, Tonight, and the Response They'll Get

Hey, how are you handlin' the heat?

Livermore roofer: By spitting on your face, douchebag!

Friday SF Heat; Alex Bennett is Doing Podcasts; KCBS Bunger Mystery; Pompous Raddy and the Betting Fool; KPIX Puff Daddy on the Bay Bridge; Friday Opener

FRIDAY WIRE

For a change I want to know about the weather. Why is it so damn hot outside? Periodically, we get lengthy heat waves but we know in short time that the fog is eventually coming. Not so this week as we've been schfitzing for more than a week with 100 degree temps forecast for the weekend. Beats 117 in Vegas and 128, (dear God), in Death Valley.

Paging Mike Pechner.

*Mystery: Where's KCBS' Stan Bunger? He's been gone for the week. Not on vacation.

*Alex Bennett, Bay Area broadcast veteran of the FM terrain and just jettisoned out of Sirius Satellite in NY, begins a 2-hour podcast this Monday from 7-9 AM, PT Here's the link if you'd care to listen.

Bennett was always worth a listen in the 80's and 90's in the Bay Area on the old KMEL and "The Quake--KQAK), even if he had an ego the size of Mt. Rushmore and enough baggage to fill AT&T Park. Bennett was responsible for the comedy revolution in the Bay Area and his broadcasts, notably the "Breakfast with Bennett" was a PR boom for comedy clubs and comedians alike.

But like most mercurial radio hosts, Bennett had several issues with radio bosses and it usually didn't end well.

*Those of you that may have noticed that there was significant less items in the blog this week because simply stated, there was nothing to talk about. The 9-Noon Knibber stiff is such a flat-out buffoon I could write endlessly but I don't want to spoil the party just yet.

*I raised 6 kids and have a family and paid off my first wife therefore I'm royalty. Just shut the hell up. And as for your betting fool--the guy who has the personality of a kumquat, keep kissing and sniffing, suit whore.

*The KRON weather chick at night should stick to predicting the weather and concentrate less on gossip with the bloated one. Maybe she thinks she's suddenly Evelyn Taft. Keep doodling at 1001 Van Ness, yenta.

*Yeah, I watched the KPIX safety program on the Bay Bridge. Can you say softie?

Alex Bennett Canned from Sirius Show in NY; Bay Area FM Personality

Alex Bennett, the longtime Bay Area broadcaster, (stints with the old KMEL, The Quake), has been fired again; this time by Sirius Satellite radio in NY where Bennett has been working the past decade.

Bennett announced his firing on his show on Monday Morning.

Enlightenment, Gary Radnich Style; KNBR Host/Show Tackles Gay Rights and Depression but Whiffs

Gary Radnich pulled off a minor miracle on his KNBR sports chat show Monday. He actually brought some enlightenment to a show that could use a healthy dose from time to time.

But Radnich, ever so mindful of exerting his usual banal Garyisms, let dumbness carry over and reverted to basic Raddy formula.

Radnich, and partner, Larry Krueger, interviewed new Raiders punter, Chris Kluwe at the top of the 10 AM hour. Kluwe is not your typical jock-is-stupid principal. In fact, Kluew is an outspoken supporter of gay rights and possesses a relatively breath of fresh air in the professional athlete circuit. In addition, he has a good sense of humor and is a helluva punter too. He even said Ray Guy belongs in the NFL Hall of Fame. But that wasn't the gist of the interview nor should it have been.

Radnich and Krueger asked good, pointed questions. Radnich even told Kluwe that "you're too smart to be a football player." It was meant as a compliment and Kluwe reacted as much. In other words, Kluwe isn't this guy.

Shortly after talking about Kluwe's candidness and marveling about his adroitness, Radnich punted, metaphorically speaking,  and soon reminded us about the old Gare.

Out of nowhere, Radnich brought up Terry Bradshaw. Bradsahw, the Fox NFL analyst has suffered from clinical depression for many years and has talked about it openly. Radnich thought this wasn't good. "Why would he talk about this?" Why wouldn't he, Gare? Maybe it's his way of dealing with the disease. Radnich didn't back down. In fact he was incredulous. "How can this guy act like a goof on the air and then tell someone about his problems?" Uh, maybe Gare, you should read a little more about the subject matter. It's in the arena, you just didn't get the memo.

Radnich could draw from this severe lack of intelligence, sensitivity, and his own enlightenment by maybe exploring the issues. It's too bad too because this used to be one of the guy's forte--not now.  The guy who tells people that their not relevant unless they have a family and kids, is life-challenged. Even when he kills on operation doofus, he still manages to whiff.

Depression is no laughing matter. It requires thought and education, not laughter and belittlement. Simple common sense and reflection. Maybe actual real-life subject matter too far up over the KNBR/Radnich pay grade.

Bigger than All Our Egos

Supermoon

2013 Super Moon

KCBS' Joe Salvatore; Don't Invite Mark Ibanez and Gary Radnich to Dinner; Radnich Makes Fun of KRON Weather Guy only Weather Guy isn't Amused; KQED; Saturday Media Minutiae

I like Joe Salvatore.

Salvatore is the KCBS weekend sports anchor usually filing reports from the Coliseum and AT&T Park during A's and Giants games.

Salvatore is straight-forward and fluid. A good, solid concise minute or so worth of sports news and information that doesn't delve into any drama just chock full of info at every :15 and 45. Salvatore is infinitely consistent too.

*QUICK SATURDAY BULLET POINTS:

Didn't know quite a few of you are OK with KPIX' refusal to run a disclaimer about its Caltrans/Bridge relationship during tonight's safety program. It was so simple to do but oh well...

*Don't expect to see KTVU's Mark Ibanez and Gary Radnich at a dinner party any time soon.

*Why was one prominent news director in town seen coming out of another news operation? Think the Battery media gulch.

*Instead of sending me insulting notes, some of KQED's rank and file should concentrate on their own in-house BS which is considerable.

*Speaking of Radnich, how classy of him to make fun of the weather guy on Friday Night who clearly looked uncomfortable and wasn't too in on the inside jokes. It's a Radnich specialty: make fun of people and try to disguise it as part of your shtick which doesn't resonate when the subject of your ridicule isn't too chuckled about it. (Talk to Ibanez).

KRON4 Newspersons Unanimously Reject Young Broadcasting's Latest Contract Offer

From SAG

Newspersons represented by SAG-AFTRA at KRON4 voted unanimously on June 7 to reject the latest contract offer proposed by KRON4/Young Broadcasting management. SAG-AFTRA members cited equitable compensation, threats to job security, and health/retirement benefit concerns as their primary reasons for rejecting the Company’s latest offer.  SAG-AFTRA has been negotiating with the Company for over a year while Newpersons continue to work with a contract that expired on April 30, 2012.
In commenting on the outcome, Chief Negotiator for SAG-AFTRA, Frank Du Charme said: “The members have sent a clear message to management that while they have been patient for over a year they want and expect a reasonable contract that provides continuation of job security previously agreed to by management, reasonable wage increases like those granted other employees doing like work and realistic Health and Retirement increases.”  “The members have spoken, the ball is now clearly in management’s court," Du Charme added. A Federal Mediator is scheduled to meet with the parties on July 18 in an attempt to reach a mutually acceptable agreement.
Young Broadcasting recently announced a merger agreement with Media General, Inc., a local broadcast and digital media company based in Richmond, Virginia.   It is unclear what effect, if any, the proposed merger will have on the continuing labor dispute.

KPIX5 and The New Bay Bridge Safety Issues Part 2; Len Tillem, The Loyah, is on Ronn Owens KGO Program And That's Kind of Interesting; Friday Opener

I asked, a few posts ago, if KPIX should be more transparent with its viewers about its relationship with Caltrans and the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge.

KPIX has been doing a lot of bridge opening programming. They're also running a program on the bridge's much-publicized safety issues on Saturday night, all well and good, but how credible can PIX be when its also pubbing the Bay Bridge's scheduled Labor Day opening, which now, given the numerous reports about bad bolts and rods, seems pretty dubious at best.

I asked the PR person at KPIX5 to comment. I explained that the response to my initial post last week drew a considerable amount of response. Readers, journalists, many of you thought it was a legitimate question.

After repeated requests for comment, KPIX5 said nothing. Maybe they think everything is OK and it may be the case. But I'm not one of those. I think it would better if the station were to acknowledge their relationship with Caltrans, sort of like a disclaimer, but we haven't seen that and I find that inappropriate at best.

How can KPIX be working with Caltrans, whose contractors and subcontractors are building the bridge; a bridge that has lots of bad bolts and rods; a bridge that has come under considerable scrutiny as to its overall safety and more importantly, the safety of the public.

KPIX chose to ignore this whole matter and its arrangement with Caltrans. I think that's pretty lame but maybe it's just me. You all have spoken. Too bad KPIX doesn't think this is a big deal and has snubbed many of its viewers.

*Former KGO Radio legal minion, Len Tillem, the loyah, is guesting today, from 11-Noon on the Ronn Owens show. That's pretty interesting but there's a multitude of back stories here.

First off, insiders tell me that Owens would like to have Tillem back in his 12-1PM time slot. So too does advertising honcho, Deidra Lieberman, (no relation). Only logical since Tillem still has a hefty following and, god forbid, something relevant to listen to on KGO.

Another story: I was told by an insider that a few folks at KGO are worried that callers might ask on the air why Tillem was let go in the first place. Expect a lot of heavy screening by Lord Jared and be weary of potential house calls when The Loyah does his thing on KGO at 11.

Morning Media Bar Bite; San Jose is No SF or Oakland

**San Jose may be a city with Silicon Valley gravitas but it's not the culture mecca that is San Francisco and, to a lesser degree, Oakland. Don't laugh at The Town. Have you read what the New York Times said about Oakland?

San Jose can brag endlessly about its divine right to steal the A's, but the courtroom is about time after time and lawyers. Delay, delay, delay.

MLB's anti-trust exemption has been the law of the land for nearly a hundred years. If and when the SJ lawsuit makes its way to the courtroom Karen Carpenter will rise from the dead.

51 is Too Young To Die

Only the good die young.

Bay Area Media Ignorance on San Jose's Legal Hail Mary to Steal the Oakland A's and why ToiletGate Will Not Change the Dynamic; Oakland's A's; Analysis

Suppose for a moment that you owned a Nordstom and that your shiny store was at the top of the block. Then imagine some new kid in town wanted to open a Neiman Marcus at the top of the block. Think you'd be concerned?

That's essentially what we're dealing here with the Giants ballpark and the A's proposed move to San Jose. It's an ongoing drama that got traction on Sunday and Monday.

On Sunday, before a sellout crowd, the Oakland Coliseum's toilets got backed up. An ensuing sewage back-up forced players from both the A's and Seattle Mariners to shower upstairs because some of the raw sewage entered the players and mangers clubhouses.

Coincidentally, two days later, (yeah, right), the city of San Jose and Mayor Chuck Reed's ego filed a mostly frivolous lawsuit against the lords of baseball challenging MLB's anti-trust exemption. As if San Jose has a right to steal the A's.

LET US acknowledge the fact that yes, the A's need a new stadium. The existing Coliseum is outdated, old, dank, and lacks the modern-day amenities that are consistent for every existing ballpark in the MLB chain. No one denies that.

But like everything else, there are issues. Lots. San Jose's move is mostly symbolic; it will not change the dynamics the least because, from a strictly legal standpoint, nothing is really unique here except for the fact that Bay Area and national media people were able to write a story about a subject matter that has been around for seemingly, an eternity, but nothing of substance has transpired.

Like it or not, the SF Giants currently possess territorial rights over Santa Clara County, including, of course, San Jose. That may seem very trivial and insignificant but it holds major cachet within baseball and carries mucho weight in the courtroom--we'll get to that later.

Baseball has an anti-trust exemption. It's been around nearly a century and no matter its merits, good or bad, (and there's plenty of bad), it still is the law of the land and it is not likely to be either challenged, much less even heard or, fantasy time, overruled by any court in the very near future beyond 2050.

There's a reason why the current impasse between the A's sights on San Jose, (namely owners John Fisher and Lew Wolff desire to seize Silicon Valley), has been put on the back burner for so long; the Giants unwillingness to allow a new neighbor, (Neiman Marcus), to take shop on top of their still tony edifice, AT&T Park, (Nordstrom). The Giants still have a mortgage on their waterfront palace, not to mention a slew of corporate sponsors and interests that make up the area directly in the A's radar. They're not about to relinquish that territory and bond without a fight and even if the A's and baseball ponied up a fat check, the Giants are dug in. They're not interested in any form of a settlement because over the long term, having the A's in their backyard compromises not just corporate interests but very significant things like, A. broadcasting/cable and TV rights, B. the value of the franchise, C. the direct threat on tickets from a fan base most of whom live and work in the South Bay and the Peninsula, you know, little things like that.

Moreover, the Giants could contend that their baseball palace was built, (privately financed), with the intention that those pesky territorial rights were to be honored. Think MLB owners and Bud Selig don't already acknowledge that and thus, the current stalemate that has been on the back burner for over 4 and a half years. The password is: stuck.

Baseball knows and understands that the A's need new digs. Duh! And here's the dilemma, dilemmas really: Bud Selig, his frat boy friend, Lew Wolff in dire straits in Oakland only Oakland, in spite of doofus leadership within the Jean Quan and city council zoo, has distinct advantages; namely the A's have played their 48 years and will probably play their at least 6-7 more years at at that dank old Coliseum; that Oakland has proposed giving Wolff and company two pieces of large acreage in Jack London Square, (Howard Terminal), or the existing Coliseum North Parking lot site that has infrastructure in place and where a new park could be up and running in less than two years. (The 49ers techno-glitz, at $1.2 Billion bucks and considerable more construction and technological works will take only two years to be built).

When Wolff and Fisher bought the team way back in 2005 they knew the obstacles. They knew that the Coliseum was Raidered. They knew that Mt. Davis was in place. They still bought the franchise and have a made a tidy sum. They made a lot of money at that dump. They made over $23 Million at that dump last year. They pay virtually NO RENT at that dump. They get virtually all the concessions, the food, the parking, at that dump. Is it then, no coincidence, that while Wolff and his yes men consistently complain, moan, groan, and dole out insult after insult at the old joint that they have repeatedly resisted the request that they SELL to a local set of investors that would like to buy the team and keep it in Oakland? Oh heck no, barks Wolff. I wonder why.

I wonder how, in spite of Wolff's repeated and endless piss-on the A's fans in Oakland; his through and complete screw you Eastbay/Oakland! folks and his 4-year and running pursuit of the prom queen called San Jose, that Athletics fans still support him, having been kicked to the curb for countless years. That Wolff and Fisher has alienated an entire city, community, fan base that has supported the team is nothing short of remarkable. And get this, Lew: the A's players themselves have adulation for the fan base. Sure, they get 10,000 on average nights in the old dump but how supportive would you be when the owner of the team continually, consistently, openly tells Oakland/Eastbay fans that he's got two feet out the door once he gets the green light.

Only that is years and decades away, at best. For one, San Jose has no stadium and that takes at least 3 years with ending EIR reports, infrastructure enhancements, political deals settles and, oh, did I forget the lawyers? No matter what, the lawyers need to get paid and they'll be plenty of lawyers here: MLB lawyers, SF Giants lawyers, Oakland/Alameda County lawyers, and yes of course, San Jose lawyers. Didn't I just read that San Jose has had to lay off a multitude of cops and firefighters; that the city has to return several millions of dollars of redevelopment money to the state because the state didn't authorize that very money designated for the new stadium that was intended for the A's? Oops.

Let's all of us get a firm grip here. As of today, the Oakland A's are going nowhere. And at the vest best, they'll be in Oakland for at least 5-6 and possibly 7-8 years. These things take time especially when the lawyers get involved. San Jose's hail Mary legal maneuver, if it even ever gets to court, (and that's years and decades away), was intended to move the meter, to reconfigure the dynamics; basically move the fences in to use a baseball metaphor only time is not on San Jose's side.

Wolff is in his mid 70's. He and his kids and grand kids, I'm assuming, want a new stadium badly, but in Oakland? Not really. I'm convinced that Old Lew, the owner of hotels in the SouthBay and real estate, would rather die before the thought of making a deal in Oakland. Lew is stubborn. Lew never intended a thought about a new stadium in the 510. He can still prick-tease the local press that he tried to work a deal in The Town but those of us who are wise to Lewis Wolff know better. We know, for instance, that his early Oakland offer was a total sham; he knew full well that a ballpark village south of 66th Ave. would never fly; that in order for the sham to have any chance that it would require the dismantlement of several old businesses and require Oakland to induct eminent-domain; yeah, Lew, we're hip to you.

Lew has a problem. So do San Jose boosters and politicians. This late-stage rally is not really a major concern. It would be like the A's are up, 6-1 in the ninth, and the visitors put two on and the umps rule a non-home run when the replay shows clearly the ball went over the fence. So then, the game is played under protest. San Jose is essentially playing this A's dynamic under protest. They're pissed off. They're frustrated. They think they're entitled to the A's, a team, at least some team. And get this, they may be right only the A's are a pipedream and a pipedream at best.

The Giants aren't interested in settlements. Why would they be? And again, they're dug in and a very prominent presence in the owners minds and pocketbooks. It's called cachet and influence. The Giants, indirectly, are Oakland's best advocate. It's the Giants and really, MLB, that are in Oakland's corner. The Giants, for reasons already explained, and MLB, Selig, who are stuck, (remember that word?), because Selig doesn't want, nor can't make a decision on this, because in addition to the Giants issues, also very much believes that Wolff and the A's don't have all the money to know the way to San Jose. That's why this whole issue hasn't been resolved and why it's taken all this time. Gees, and you had to read it from a damn blogger!

A high-top Oakland booster who worked as an executive with the Haas family when they owned the A's told me directly that the "A's have been moving for the past 25 years; Sacramento, Denver, Las Vegas, Portland, San Antonio, ..." And they've played in that dump, the Oakland Coliseum, for the past 48 seasons. And they'll be playing there for many more years.

No matter what San Jose wants; no matter how much our so-called "press" thinks this day-after-toilet-gate lawsuit against baseball has merit and will really advance the story, the fact of the matter is that nothing has been advanced, at least in the practical sense. Except that a whole bunch of lawyers will be billing and that their accountants will be busy.

It's "OAKLAND" s A's and will be for the long, foreseeable future.

A Variety of Topics and Items to Mull; San Jose's MLB Lawsuit

Quick Bullet Points:

*I'm studying the San Jose lawsuit against MLB. Fact is, baseball has an anti-trust exemption and therefore, the idea that any suit is a prelude for the A's eventual move from Oakland to the Southbay is premature at best.

Years and years of litigation, and that's the practical situation here only means just a lot of lawyers billing...this situation isn't about to be resolved quickly one way or another.

CSNBA's Papa and Reiss; Northern Cal Emmys; KTVU; KPIX; Kawakami/Purdy Wolff Lovefest; Monday Media Blotter

MONDAY MEDIA BLOTTER ....

If you notice a bit of tension between Comcast SportsNet's Greg Papa and Scott Reiss, you're quite shrewd. It's not that noticeable but both are not exactly chummy these days and it's not merely money matters, although the financial chasm is quite extraordinary, (guess who makes about $150G more), and the fact that Papa is the primary pre and post-game host for the Giants is also quite annoying to Reiss, who Papa replaced.

There's a bit of irony here: Reiss is doing the A's pre and post shows, (along with the vastly-improved, if still occasionally bland, Bip Roberts); while the Giants are numero uno, ratings wise the king of the hill, the A's are in first place and actually playing better than the Larry Baer machine.

**They had the Northern California Emmys the other night at the Hilton. I had an invitation to go but I was already tied up in my previous engagement to see a cryonics documentary on the local access channel.

**That new morning guy on KTVU seems to have a lot of face time over the suddenly enhanced-vacation status of one Dave Clark.

**Tim Kawakami, the SJ Merc blogger/writer and fellow scribbler, Mark Purdy: unabashed Lew Wolff aide and abettors for Wolff's kissy-kisses with San Jose. Two things, well three: 1. At least Purdy has the guile to debate the topic and go at it; Kawakami, on the other hand, is a coward and hides. 3. This is not media-related but the A's and their plumbing problem will be in Oakland for at least 5-6 more years no matter what happens; San Jose is a pipe-dream at best and that's thanks to the Giants and Mr. Baer who still have a house to pay for and is not about ready to relinquish their territorial rights to the A's...Want a basic clue? If San Jose and the A's were even close to  deal they'd have had it now. There is NO deal and that's why MLB, Bud Selig, and Wolff are stuck in neutral. It's Oakland or bust.

**My KPIX item generated a lot of discussion about the safety of the bridge, (which if you re-read the post), had the least to do with the item...as for Caltrans and PIX' cushy promotional tour, I'll leave for you all to decide.

**Quite a scene over at Cumulus' key station where some intern/producer  ran up quite a lunch tab for a quick bite at Grumpy's. I'm not kidding. Anything over $30 gets looked at. Here's hoping some manager bring in extra tuna sandwiches for the assorted crumbs running around the 11th floor.

**KTVU would like to thank the corner of 6th and Market for trusting them.

**Christina Loren: You're  good but your not that good.

**Wayne Freedman: There comes a time when you get sort of stuffy. Maybe the 7800 Emmys need to be fumigated.

**Farce: Tom Sinkovitz can't get a gig in local TV because some of the consultants thinks he's old. Another reason to kick the shit out of all consultants.

**I'm repeating myself, again, but KCBS' shameful repeat after repeat after repeat after repeat story during the weekends, (most notably), and less often, (but still way too much), during weekdays has begun to taint the brand. And I've been, (and continue to be), pretty much supportive of the KCBS operation so don't beat me up, Doug Harvill.

**The local, popular female anchor reporter who likes to mix and match with the boys at Kokkari might be inclined to know that her recent tip on a $150 tab wasn't entirely appreciated by the bartenders. Maybe next time at least 10% would be doable.

KPIX5's New Bay Bridge Dilemma

KPIX will run a program on June 22 about the safety of the new eastern portion of the Bay Bridge. Sounds like a good idea given the numerous press accounts that the bridge is beset with problems and is unsafe.

Here's the kicker: KPIX is also the semi- official local TV station of the new bridge and is promoting the scheduled Labor Day opening. In addition, the station aired this program on the night after the Super Bowl.

Is there something wrong here?

I'm not suggesting that PIX is in cahoots with CalTrans to get the bridge opened up on time so it can take advantage of all the PR associated with this massive project. In fact, the more you read and hear about the very legitimate safety issues, (or lack thereof), the more you think PIX and its suits probably wish they weren't associated with this $7B potential white elephant.

I'm just wondering aloud how the local CBS O and O can execute such a difficult balancing act without the slightest appearance of some sort of conflict of interest. It's a legitimate question that deserves some feedback don't you think? I do.

A Morning Ritual: The NY Times, KCBS, Coffee and Some Scrambled Eggs; Friday Opener

Wake up about 6, pick up the print edition of the NY Times. I like the feeling of an actual newspaper in my hands. There's nothing like breakfast, coffee, and the Times. Eternal tranquility.

Glance at the Chronicle. Go on-line. Scan SFGate and the Merc. Go to Lowell Cohn and the Santa Rosa Press Democrat. Cohn blogs, easily the best read in the Bay Area if you enjoy sports. I like Scott Ostler too but Lowell is numero uno.

Turn on the radio at home. Check in on KCBS and try to catch Mark Sandalow and his Washington rap with Stan Bunger and Susan Leigh Taylor. Sandalow is good because he sounds genuine and knows a lot of information concerning politics. It's not animated and contrived. It's resolute, firm, and a damn good 3-4 minutes, (frankly, I wish it could stretch to 5, but traffic and weather rules). Then it's Bitker's updates at :15 and :45 after the hour. I needle Steve every now and then but he's easily the best sports radio anchor in the market. There's no argument there. Rich Walcoff is good too; about the only reason to listen to KGO and turn the dial when the gigglers start barking.

9 AM--

I'll just switch, briefly, to Ronn, and if there's a pulse, I might stay for awhile. If there's a political guest on the phone, I'll hang for the quick phono--after that, I'm gone.

In the car, it's over to KCSM, the jazz and big band music give me nirvana.

**Hey KNBR producer: you may think it's funny and clever to play the traffic sounder over and over while the 9-Noon schmucks and yenta talk but it sounds like shit, even by Knibber standards. Maybe if you were in Clovis, it could be funny, but this is SF, a city that once used to have great radio. Your on-air production virtues are about as sanguine as Radu's armpits.

Siege Mentality, (Again), at KGO Radio; KTVU Not Trusting Itself; State of Bay Area TV News; Coffee Media Thursday

Despite the house cheerleader who shills for the cloud people in Atlanta, things are not too cheery at KGO Radio's offices and abode at the 55 Hawthorne cluster. Nobody has a clue what direction el (Sklenar,)  the new guy, is about to configure. Not a clue even.

A news staffer, (who asked that their name not be used because they need the money), says it's more dire straits than ever.

"We come in, (if we have to), and then we get the hell out of here asap.--There's absolutely no direction and nobody minding the store. Just simply awful." Gees, how stunningly wonderful. Yet again, dare I say that I'm not surprised. Same old story. And I've heard worse really. Lately, there's talk of a radical makeover, whatever that is.

Fact is, KGO has become so off the radar, so out of touch, so out of market. Is there a there there? Hell no. And the fact that the new guy is supposed to come in off his white horse and construct major change is not credible especially when it's been pointed out that he's never run a news/sports or talk station. That's always a great idea: make a "firm" hire and dole out the hard chores with a guy who has no meat experience in a market he knows NOTHING about but his Starbucks cards have been amped up. Maybe he should have an extra meeting. Meetings, once again, I'm told he's good at. Hey everyone, we're gonna kick KCBS' ass! Right, time to have my Sweetjack coffee.

**At KTVU, the mood is not that much better mainly because the story counts get higher and higher because the consultants insist so. There's a sense of artificiality there too. Notice all the new reporters you've never heard of? And here's a beauty: After reporters do their requisite live shot, orders have been barked aloud once again: NO PAUSE!--get your voice back to studio in nano-second otherwise you'll be hoisted over to the Emeryville Dennys.

**OK, I'll say it: The Bay Area local TV news scene is bland, bland, bland. Outside of a few fresh faces and anchors/reporters that are better than average, the bunch of 'yous look tired, blasé, and, frankly, out of touch, out of this league. And another thing? Get your location right! Pronounce the damn street right! It's not DOYLE AVENUE!--it's DOYLE DRIVE!, moron. Go to a dive and have a beer and talk to some of the locals. Talk is good. Think of it as an education. You're damn lucky to have escaped market#62 and land in #6--have a little appreciation here before someone from upstairs tells you to hit the road for your next stop in Toledo doing the nooner. Jesus Christ!

**Traffic, spots, traffic, minute news, traffic, spots, more spots, sports, traffic, 10 minutes of spots, nameless traffic uttered by some shadow traffic, blah, blah, blah....otherwise known as Bay Area radio in the morning.

**Pandora move: it's about time.

**The morning yutz at Knibbber took the day off so his betting fool and the yenta could talk to each other: immediately switch to mattress man, "live from the Conklin Brothers studio.", OMG, gag me and hit me.

Gripe Monday

OK, vent, vent, go at it.

Attention SF Bay Area Media People: Project Reboot this Thursday

A Good Cause and a Good Party--Attend!

PROJECT REBOOT
Thursday, June 13, 2013

Media People, check this out. From a friend who used to man the posts near the 855 Battery gulch...

Project Reboot is meant to bring the industry folks together, veterans and newbies, owners and students, actors and behind-the-scenes characters into one giant fold for one day to, aggregate, celebrate and socialize face to face.  It isn't the farcical "likes" on Facebook, superficiality of following on Twitter or pinging on email.  This is true to life engagement, shaking hands, engaging in conversations, catching up with old friends, reminiscing about the good old days we all tend to romanticize and glorify and meeting new folks that you otherwise wouldn't meet.  This is the anti-Google 360 with no Pinterest and Reddit agenda.

I hope that it's an event that brings news media, film, video and Internet Arts professionals together for one day this year, to feel the strength of our industry, to strengthen our camaraderie and build business connections.

--On Thursday, June 13th, celebrate the Bay Area's vibrant production community with 26 of San Francisco's top production companies as they show off their abilities and facilities for industry professionals. Schmooze your way across town collecting raffle tickets from each location to win great prizes at "SOMA-palooza," a revitalization and networking after-party aimed at bringing the production community together. Join us for the raffle drawing, food trucks, bbq, beer, La Croix and some great spins from the DJ.

KGO-TV's Solid Carolyn Tyler on Sunday Morning

I like Carolyn Tyler. She delivers a quality, interesting, straight-forward Sunday-morning newscast on the local TV news deli.

I've always wondered why Tyler hasn't been moved to the weekday primetime schedule on KGO-TV's, (ABC7) news blocks. She's versatile, she's a veteran and she's been in the Bay Area for multiple decades and has several industry awards on her resume.

A few months ago I asked Tyler herself about whether she was happy with her current status and she told me that she was. Again, many a times I thought Tyler would be a solid news anchor at night. It's OK, Sunday morning works just fine and is a nice local newscast for sure.

How To Creatively Rip the New Comcast SportsNet Bay Area/Yahoo Show Featuring Melanie Collins, Jim Kozimor, and Melanie Collins; Did I Say Melanie Collins?

It's not that the new Comcast SportsNet/Yahoo sports talk show is that bad; it isn't. It's just that if I were programming the latest attempt for content on the local cable outlet, I would have gone for broke. I would have just bit the bullet and injected Melanie Collins into the show as much as possible because it seems that the reason Melanie Collins is there is that she's Melanie Collins and if you've seen Melanie Collins, she's not Jim Kozimor, got it.

** Wonder what the other women at CSNBA think of Melanie Collins. One good thing: she's not Ann Killion.

**Jim Kozimor, (pictured above), is Greg Papa without the Armani suit.

**The real reasons why there's a Yahoo show locally: so local talk hosts and writers can go on TV; to showcase Melanie Collins and her wares and to highlight Kozimor's brilliant journalism! Kozimor is the next Bryan Gumbel and Melanie Collins is the next Melanie Collins.

KRON Should Rebrand As All-News, (Sort Of); Exclusive Peek Inside The 415 Media Coffee Shop With Bay Area Media Celebrities; TGIF

KRON should rebrand itself.

It has the chance to make a move as 24-7 news station, well, sort of.

KRON could try to reinvent itself as a sort of Bay Area version of NY1, the big apple all-news outlet which is a pretty much no-frill news and sports. It doesn't have a high budget and sticks to local NY metro news, sports and weather.

KRON, its financial status settled for the time being, already has begun to shed some of its albatross state with a fairly steady, if bare bones, template of local news and lots of weather and time checks. It still possesses a few star names, (Heenan, Moore, Lividakis, Radnich, etc). Sure, the onslaught of infomercial specials and low-tripe off-news programming has to remain for money reasons, but KRON could make a dent if it were to abandon some of the short tripe and stick to more traffic and AP copy in the late morning, early afternoon, and into the evening too.

**KPIX5 has been adding a few more reporters to its manager-heavy personnel dept. That's good news only these new reporters come from markets in the 70-100 dept. and nobody really cares at this time.

**Nice that KCBS should mention 4000 times its in-house love fest BBQ with John Madden on Friday. Hey guys, commuters love Madden but while they're on their way to the office and trudging a 9-5 day, the last thing they want to hear, 4000 times, is your pigout on the grill with the coach. Bunger and Bitker should read the room, you too, Susan Leigh-Taylor.

**INSIDE THE 415 MEDIA COFFE SHOP:

*Marla Tellez:
Eggs Benedict and a mimosa.

*Dan Noyes: cheeseburger and fries, small salad.

*Darya Folsom: hotcakes.

*The KNBR Morning Show: Spam omelet, burnt toast.

*Diane Dwyer: Steak Diane, glass of Kendall Jackson cab, 1998

*Ronnnnnnnn Owens: corned-beef hash, black coffee

*Greg Papa: chicken-salad sandwich with some club soda.

*Jan Wahl: Joe's special with a side of bacon and rye toast.

*Larry Beil: hot link with a banana milkshake.

*Tom Rapponi: whole chicken, boiled.

*Janelle Wang: sand dabs, steamed spinach with hollandaise sauce, champagne.

*Ken Wayne: BLT with a diet coke.

*Dan Ashley: 42-ounce porterhouse with a baked potato.

*Damon Bruce: brisket with some chopped liver on the side. Egg-cream.

*Larry Krueger: dry oatmeal with a cup of 7/11 coffee.

*Gary Radnich: mutton; pan-fried, with some orange soda and a side of fries.

*Frank Sommerville: French toast.

*Mark Ibanez: Eggs Florentine with carrot juice.

*Joe Fonzi: vanilla ice cream.

*Fred Inglis: vanilla ice-cream, with some chocolate sauce.

*Dennis O'Donnell: chipped-beef on toast.

*Roberta Gonzales: Calamari steak, Caesar salad.

*Da Lin: cup of tea.

*Stanley Roberts: Double Double at In and Out. Strawberry shake.

*Eric Byrnes: 2 cans of Red Bull, a chili-cheese dog, and tonic water.

*Dan Rosenheim: 2 Guinness and a bowl of peanuts.

*Wayne Freedman: cheerios, granola and some green tea with a bagel on the side, plain.

*Tom Tolbert: 2 extra large grilled cheesed sandwiches, curly fries and cheesecake with a vat full of PBR to go.

The New Guy at the SF Cumulus Cluster

Steve Sklenar.

I don't know the guy. Don't really have to. He's from San Diego and is the new "Cumulus Market MGR" for SF. Whoop De doo.

Sklenar will sit in an office and talk tough. He'll "rally the troops." That's what market managers do, rally the troops. I'm sure there will be meetings. Lots of meetings. Managers love meetings; it's a way to feel important.

Meanwhile, the classy latest MGR was so classy he brought his GSM with him to SF. I'm sure the sales staff, all 6 of 'em, (give or take a few), just can't wait to meet the dynamic duo.

As usual, there's a lot of talk and bravado from the new guy. He has a lot on his plate. Like the others, recently, who proceeded him, he'll talk a lot. Talk is cheap. So is "all-news" too.

I can hardly stand the excitement.

A Lunchtime Chat With NBC Bay Area's Marla Tellez

Speaking to Marla Tellez from NBC Bay Area on her way to the Giants game...

Pithy questions from me: A. Marla, what are you having for lunch: "uh, probably the crab sandwich, a Stella beer and a bag of peanuts."

B. Do you eat tofu? "OMG, it's funny you mentioned that, I love tofu!" I think she was eating it in the car.  (This is not good.)

C. Are you single? Just curious. "Yeah." (hum baby!)

D. Obviously, you like baseball: "I LOVE baseball!" (OK, dumb question from me but in the course of my history of hard-hitting journalism, I occasionally go rogue.)

Marla is on 101 nearing Burlingame and I have to go. Ah, what beautiful symmetry.

Stan The Commenter

Stan is a frequent commenter on Bay Area media blogs. I don't know who or what Stan looks like but he is prolific. I find Stan to be hilarious even though sometimes, he does go off the cliff, metaphorically speaking.

A few sites have banned Stan. I'm allowing Stan to continue here as long as he doesn't go full-throttle Rupert Pupkin on me.

Some of what Stan opines, while, granted, sounds uber-crazy, tends to be occasionally true. No matter what, he cracks me up. One thing though about Stan is that he has to clean up some of his material otherwise I'll have to ban him to the Ellen Jamesians society.

Sklenar to Run S.F. for Cumulus

I haven't had a chance to gauge this but here's the latest from Radio Ink.

I Waited Hours To Watch Melanie Collins Debut on Yahoo Sports Talk Live; Janelle Wang, Stock Up; Tuesday Media Notes

Yahoo! Sports Talk Live debuted on Monday Night on
Comcast SportsNet Bay Area.

Melanie Collins

Real invigorating. Tremendous Sports Journalism. I was waiting for Howard Cosell to enter from the ground and belt out a huzzah.

Suffice to say that I watched about as much of this, eh, program as I could. Some young blond woman who covers sports for Yahoo, Melanie Collins, also debuted, as did some hyper British guy who said a bunch of things. I couldn't make out anything he was saying because he was talking very fast and I was too glued on checking out Collins. She adds a lot to the program but I'm not too sure it's sports-related. If that's perceived as being misogynist, it shouldn't be. I admire the great sports journalistic tendencies of Collins; as far as I'm concerned she's the Diane Sawyer of sports. I smell a Pulitzer coming. I'm going to watch Yahoo Sports Talk live every now and then just to see when Collins breaks into investigative sports form.

**Comcast SportsNet Inner love dept. special: The multi-invigorating, hardened sports journo supreme, Paul Gutierrez, is now an Oakland A's "insider" for the cable network. Gutierrez is married to Amy G, the woman reporter that does hard-hitting interviews on the field for the SF Giants. Guiterrez A, Guiterrez P, Glenn Kuiper, Dwayne Kuiper. Notice a trend?

** I rarely talk about the female voice on Knibber from 9-Noon because you already know how I feel and no matter what I say, how I feel, the results will be the same. The same old song. Of course I also know too, that, she too, could be a future Marconi winner much the same way as I too could be the next leading man opposite Cameron Diaz.

**Roy Hibbert: karma.

**The great Radu update: 12 more kisses to the betting fool. If he keeps this up, Fred and Ethel might have to sit on him and beg for insults.

**It's not that I enjoy picking on the bloated one, he just encourages it.

**Somebody at KTVU should tell Rapponi that the moles are out in full force. I suggest a memo.

**More Stock Up: Janelle Wang, KNTV, NBC Bay Area. Works hard. Dedicated. Cool personality

Stock Up and Stock Down on SF Bay Area TV anchors; KGO-TV's Daetz at top of the list

Ama Daetz
STOCK UP--STOCK DOWN

STOCK UP:

Ama Daetz: KGO-TV: Smart, charming, sophisticated delivery with award-winning smile and moxie. She's being positioned to become one of KGO's core heavyweight anchors along with Ashley and Carolyn Johnson. And she's, yes, beautiful.

Diane Dwyer: KNTV: She's been working the weekend anchor chair but my sources down in San Jose insist that management might be inclined to want her to eventually replace Jessica Aguirre. That's the plan, at least.

Mike Mibach: KTVU: I initially had my doubts about Mibach's ability to become a top-flight anchor; he certainly looks the part, but gradually I've come to enjoy the youthful, adept MO2 anchor.

Allen Martin: KPIX: Again, not one of my favorites at the CBS O and O, but you have to respect Martin's overall consistency and professionalism. And anybody who can get along with the news director is automatically arrowed-up at PIX. One more thing: Martin is a good news reader and working next to Liz Cook might grate on the nerves of others; Martin seems to be thriving. Good for him, good for PIX.

STOCK DOWN: Dave Clark: KTVU: Despite winning numbers in the morning, many viewers have never warmed to the ex-LA TV news vet. In spite a being a nice guy, Clark's quirky, on-screen scowls have become noticeably awkward. He's well-liked by a majority of the staff in the newsroom at 2 but I hope he finally got rid of his infamous picture of himself and OJ Simpson adorned at his desk. That was never liked by folks in the back offices.

Larry Beil: KGO-TV: Once and for all, the unmitigated arrogance from this ex-ESPN/KTVU tonsil has begun to erode his support. He has hardly warmed to KGO viewers; that's evident. The fact that he's being viewed from above by the ABC execs back in NY might portend for something negative in the future.

Brian Hackney: KPIX: Hackney has the backing of the ND, Dan Rosenheim, his good buddy, but the fact that Hackney hasn't found a permanent place at PIX's news desk is both revealing and pointed. More to the point, the folks at CBS O and O relations in NY don't feel kind to paying a guy big bucks to essentially float around and not have a firm place. That $300K salary might be Hack's undoing.

My favorite SF Media Hangouts/Restaurants; Tadich, John's Grill and Tommy's Joynt to name a few; Sunday Steak

My favorite media hangouts in the city are all legendary places; some a bit classy than others, and a few you might consider surprises.

*Tadich Grill has been around for over a hundred years--the food is great, we all know that, but what I love the most is the consistent experience of the place; the bread is always fresh and the butter is always nice, the waiters in their white uniforms with the old-fashioned food order checklist. Tadich also has a knack for giving you a great meal every time in and out and fast. Herb Caen used to love the private booth, but I still like the front counter.

*John's Grill: Always a winner in my book. Old-fashioned and a SF staple. This is where the Chron's entertainment and singles writer, Gerry Nachman, interviewed me. Like Tadich, the place is quintessential SF with great food and vibe, a certifiable throwback, located across the street from where the old Emporium used to be located. Best sand dabs in America and yes, again, classy waiters. No wonder it has Bogey edge.

*Tommy's Joynt: I joke always about Tommy's Joynt but it's still a hit. Hoffbrau food is my favorite but it has to be good. The old Hoffbrau in Oakland on Broadway was #1, at least until I devoured Tommy's. It's across the street from the KRON building. I've heard numerous stories. But I'll concentrate on the food: I like the hot turkey sandwich and the brisket is to die for. I'm not a beer guy but they have about 50,000 choices and the prices of both of the food and booze are reasonable.

What places do you like?

Barbieri lawsuit against Cumulus/KNBR proceeds; Dickey deposed; Trial begins Sept. 9; Yahoo replaces Chronicle on CSNBA Talk Show; Saturday Media Notes

Ralph Barbieri's lawsuit against Cumulus is proceeding; both he and his lawyer, Angela Alioto, returned to the Bay Area Friday night after a day in Atlanta where Cumulus CEO, Lew Dickey, was deposed.

Barbieri was fired from KNBR in April of 2012 and months later, filed an unlawful termination suit against Cumulus media. The odds of the suit making it all the way through the legal web and to actual court is long and arduous, let alone Barbieri winning, but the Dickey deposition means the ex-KNBR talk vet is serious about pursuing his day in court.

The trial begins Sept. 9th. No talk of settlement on either side.

**Comcast SportsNet's, "Chronicle Live" is no more: come Monday, the sports cable show becomes "Yahoo Sports Live." My gut tells me Yahoo offered a sizable chunk of cash to sponsor the local sports chat show and the Chronicle balked. Just a hunch.
