MIKE SHUMANN's Fate was sealed when KGO-TV higher-ups met with members of the Warriors organization and tried to offer Shumann's explanation for the stolen jacket incident.
The Warriors were not interested; more importantly, Warriors' players wanted nothing to do with Shumann after watching a video of him taking an employee's jacket after practice in San Antonio.
Keep in mind, after I reported that the Warriors players didn't like Shumann even before the incident, he was never coming back on the Warriors' beat, much less KGO's air. It was at that point that the only thing to talk about was how KGO (and ABC/Disney) would handle his leaving. Would it be a termination with cause or a resignation? After negotiations with Shumann, the latter would take place. Shumann, who was planning on retiring in two years anyway, really had no choice.
Early on, KGO management, like his colleagues, were dumbfounded over the allegations that Shumann could commit such a deed. After over 24 years of work at the station, they were willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
So was I.
But after reviewing the video of the incident --and talking with Shumann, they were convinced that his initial explanation that the whole episode "was a total misunderstanding"--evidently, KGO officials were not satisfied with his side of the story and decided to part ways. The "resignation" was really a termination.
Moreover, as I reported here, the Warriors' business relation with KGO (it broadcasts playoff games and as an ABC O and O is the home station for the NBA Finals) is virtually unbreakable and KGO pays special attention to its Warriors' affiliation --the revenue from its partnership means several millions of dollars to the station not to mention exclusive content such as post-game shows, interviews, advertising and the like. KGO would not ever mess with that and for good reason.
Shumann's replacement has not formally been announced. Mindi Bach has been filing in but word is KGO is looking for a new weekend sports anchor and back-up weeknight broadcaster.

He should have gotten Rudy Giuliani to explain everything...
ReplyDeleteLOFL!
DeleteI heard Shu’s been prepping his front yard for a new tree (Sessile Oak) that he grabbed last week.
ReplyDeleteRick Quan should go full time at KGO.
ReplyDeleteHe stole Radnich's line.
DeleteMindi would make a good weekend sports anchor.
ReplyDeleteI suspect that Shuman has probably done this in the past, he just didn't get caught. The good news is that MINDY BACH is back at circle 7. She's much easier on the eyes than Shu.
ReplyDeleteon warriors forum a guy said about Shumann..."'Wonder if he stole KD's 3 Point Shot''.
ReplyDeleteKGO says, "Shoo, man."
ReplyDeleteHello Mindi!
ReplyDeleteI'm still wondering what he was thinking. Unbelievable.
ReplyDeleteI like both Bach & Quan. Wish they could move the needle further with the bigger viewers, but probably can't. Should be interesting to see which Beil Backup candidates will be considered by KGO-TV. Circle7 might be wise to listen to the Warriors' suggestions. PR Main Man Raymond Ridder might know someone, and of course more opinionated players like Green & KD could chime in as well. Must make sure they pick the right person, as in both Ratings Gold and especially Dubs Approval.
ReplyDeleteNEVER HEARD HIS SIDE OF THE STORY - THE "MISUNDERSTANDING." Obviously it was an intentional act. @ 2:57 is right on. Likely happened before, just never caught red-handed.
ReplyDeleteI hope SHOE enjoys his newly acquired Warriors Jacket and his retirement.
ReplyDeleteJeez Rich, how well DO you know him ?? His fate was sealed when it was discovered that he was stealing, that he could no longer be trusted because he is a thief. By the way, I heard from a very reliable source that the security camera footage made him look just three and a half pounds heavier....because of the jacket he made off with !!
ReplyDeleteYep, just as I thought. They fired his kleptomaniac ass, but spun it as "Retirement"
ReplyDeleteMindi Bach should get opportunity for Shumann's job. More than capable.
ReplyDeletemaybe other sports people make off with items. ''hmm, those commemorative Gold Medals wont be missed, they have so many of them anyway- think i'll take one-they won't notice''.
ReplyDeleteMindi Bachis a seasoned professional, very familiar with the Bay Area sports and respected, I believe, by the viewers. KGO 7 would hire her as the week-end, primary backup to Beil.
ReplyDeleteI'm stilling asking myself, "What was he thinking?"
ReplyDeleteI believe, the Warriors had previous theft situations in the past, and set a booby trap for the thief, and they caught the snake in the trap.
ReplyDeletePromoting Rick Quan to Shu's spot makes the most sense. Why is he not the first in line? All the professional athletes respect him since he's been reporting Bay Area sports for more than 30 years. He's been at KGO for almost ten years. Mindi Bach is cutting in line. Why is she getting plum assignments like covering the Warriors in New Orleans so quickly? Clearly, white woman privilege, because she is neither easy on the eyes nor ears.
