Money Dictates Shumann's Fate; KGO-TV's Lucrative Relationship with Warriors Probably Spells Doom for Veteran Sports Anchor

Image result for KGO TV and Warriors ATG I DON'T LIKE THE INEVITABLE DECISION coming regarding Mike Shumann's likely dismissal because of an alleged theft, but odds are the 28-year KGO-TV sports anchor will be fired.

There's several factors dictating this move but the biggest one is the most obvious: money.

It always is.

KGO makes a ton of money off its business relationship with the Warriors; those post-game shows involve several millions of dollars --no wonder it's all "exclusive" content.

"The revenue generated by the 'Warriors essentially pays the station its freight," said a KGO staffer familiar with the broadcast terms. Which means any deviation from its broadcast rights with the team is virtually unbreakable. That status probably spells doom for Shumann.

Image result for moneyShumann, according to those in the know, wasn't liked by many players on the team before the alleged theft incident in San Antonio.

Furthermore, after watching the video of the affair, many players stated they would no longer speak to him. That would complicate matters with KGO, which would obviously have to make a tough decision regarding Shumann's fate even if his "it was a total misunderstanding" reaction to the San Antonio is true.

KGO could simply take Shumann off the Warriors' beat (as they did before Sunday's and Tuesday's games) and replace him with Larry Beil; a decision on that and all other matters is supposedly being bandied about at KGO's 900 Front building.

  1. He stole the jacket.. Plain and simple. Without the security camera, he takes the jacket, the dude that owns it blows it off to not taking care of his possessions and life goes on. But Shuman, a popular local TV personality and former 49er just destroyed his reputation and half his life for a damned jacket.. Humans until the end of time will continue to make stupid decisions..

  2. "KGO could simply take Shumann off the Warriors' beat..."

Love Shu, but it's not that simple. Everyone's seen the video where--rather than alert arena staff--he walks off with the jacket. Not sure he or the station will have any credibility if he remains.

  3. Shu needs to stay, but that won't happen. The News Director
(Trixie) is also on the hot seat. She'll sacrifice him primarily to save her own ass. It won't have anything to do with JacketGate.

  4. I hope Shu’s been more truthful with his family about what really happened than he’s been with Channel 7 or the Warriors.

  5. Hello, he's a thief!!!! Do I really need to say more??

  6. Yes, like professional athletes are pure as the driven snow. Some of those black Warriors should be fired for the stuff that comes out of their mouths.

    1. Scott you are so tough hiding behind the M. If you're going to take shots at people without "Real Names", come back when you have a "Real Name".

  7. Some of you are really brave hiding behind "Anonymous". Sure wish we could hear his side of the story. This whole thing is still very strange. Hey first guy... it's not "plain and simple" he stole it. Maybe he thought it was lost and he was going to return it. Why the hell would he steal a jacket?! I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt until he admits he STOLE it. And btw, how can he STEAL it if it was left out there unattended? If he broke into the guy's car, that would be stealing. Saying he "took" it is enough.

    1. Scott, you're hiding behind an empty Google+ account!

    2. At least I'm using my name. Sorry my empty account is bothering you, Nameless. I don't use Google+

He's not real popular in the newsroom either, though I personally never had a run in with him. IbaƱez on the other hand is a genuine douche.

  9. So the players will only talk to sports reporters they "like", and get all kerfluffled when some silly team jacket, fabbed up in China goes missing? What delicate little flowers they are. They'll soon learn that no one wants to interview them at all, when they are past their ability to bounce a ball.

  10. Wow Rich, you're really going to the mat for this guy even though it shows that he clearly stole the jacket. I doubt you would defend Radnich, Murph or Mac, Somerville, etc. if they were in the same situation. I guess being a 'subscriber' has its perks.

  11. I agree with the person allegedly named "Scott M." I think this is a lame story overall, but an opportunity for KGO to get rid of the guy "for cause." It sucks for anyone to lose their job, but if you put yourself into a position that leaves others with an impression that you did something inappropriate, you have only yourself to blame. Also, I have no shame posting as Anonymous - its a choice in the drop-down menu. Plus, why login or create a login that will be stolen in a future hacking incident? No thanks...enough of my information is out there...too bad it's not Anonymous'.

  12. I'm missing some socks. Does Shumann know anything about this?

  13. How would this have turned out if Shumann was black?

  14. Al Sharpton would arrive accusing the warriors of encouraging the theft of team merchandise.

  15. I did notice Mindi Bach on KGO TV the other night doing a sports broadcast. Possible replacement??

    1. Possibly. She's been doing fill-in at KGO for a while now.

  16. He deserves to be fired not for taking the jacket, but for the ghastly act of being over 50 and wearing his hat backwards, a lesson to be learned here I'm sure.

    1. Excellent point 8:58pm.
Indeed. A man over 50 and still wearing his cap backwards?
This guy needs to grow up and accept adulthood.

  18. This is such nonsense. Give me a break, he picked up a jacket that had clearly been left behind by the owner. Regardless of weather his intention was to return it or not, the Warriors are just trying to prove some racial point.... Had he been a black anchor things would have gone down differently. Yeah, had Shu been black they would have laughed about it together and nothing else would happen... this is not like a white cop shoots an unarmed black man story. Just big time Warriors players trying to cause some heat... Clearly they hated Shuman before this ordeal.

  19. Rich, great reporting on the "stolen jacket" story. It's kind of over now though. Just waiting for the decision-like a prize fight! Do you have any other new news or stories? Let's keep going on what is happening new tomorrow.

  20. Let the station make the decision. Personally, I would fire him, but I'm not going to lose any fucken sleep over it. Morons with shitty jobs are constantly on Twitter hoping someone with a good job gets fired. #Getafuckenlife

  21. You must not watch the news: if he was black he would have been shot. They’d have claimed the jacket looked like a gun...

  22. I like cartoons ..

  23. Knock if off with the "If he was Black" shit. Stick with the issue. Dumb bastard took something that wasn't his and the Warriors don't want a thief in their locker room.

    ReplyDelete
  24. So, did Shu do stuff like this in the past--pick up misc belongings left behind by team personnel/staff in whatever thousands of lockerrooms/arenas he's been in?

  25. Wow! More than meets the eye!

    - Didn't know Trixie was still employed by KGO-TV. Yikes!
    - Bach is cool, but who will assist Beil the rest of this postseason? They also have Rick Quan, but might they run through the successor list for the Warriors?
    - Speaking of postseason, Circle7 and the Dubs better not overmarket. This Pelicans team is more lethal than one. More than the man known as the Unibrow....Anthony Davis. Their backcourt Jrue Holiday and Rajon Rondo are equally hot. Holiday's brother Justin played with the Warriors, and Rondo can snap at any second, so those two factors might help KGO and the Warriors see more postseason play. But until Dubs Therapist Chelsea Lane lets Captain Steph Curry return, viewers of all Bay stripes better be as wary of the broadcasts as they are of the Shu Scandal.
    - Eventually the Warriors will return to SF in 2019, and that means more 49er Alumni Shu's age will meet the team. Let's hope the rest of the Joe Cool Circle is far more cool in the eyes of the Warriors' great players than Shu unfortunately was not. Both sides better come up with a resolution so neither side is distracted during the dangerous Pelicans series.
    - This never has and never will be about race. This is a basic personality clash between a beat reporter and players on the team, similar to national animosity toward the likes of Screamin A' and Scummin' Skip Bayless, wherever that may be. Shumann rub a lot of the players the wrong way across the board. Both sides again need to put this behind them, preferably by tomorrow so the team can further focus for that very important Saturday night Game 1 West Semis v NOLA.

    1. @ 10:04 PM - I have no idea what you're talking about - do you seriously think the team will be distracted by this heading into the series against a very good New Orleans team? I think they couldn't care less at this point.

And do me a favor, don't use "Dubs", the name of the team is the Warriors. Do you also call San Francisco "San Fran"??

  26. He stole it. Got caught. You just can't do that. And, with the money in play, he really should be fired. I had to fire someone for stealing a co-worker lunch right off her desk.

  27. Hmmmm, I've seen Shoe, wearing some rather nice Giants, A's, Raiders jackets. Now I wonder if he bought them or 'acquired' them!!!!
