*KTVU, if the buzz around Jack London Square is correct, (lots of rampant speculation) is in the midst of an internal inquiry it DAMN WELL would just as soon hope did not take place. It involves an unsavory incident, (allegedly) and it has both an anchor, (male) and show producer's name on it.
*Charlie Walter, second sports fiddle on KPIX is leaving--any day now. Not a big deal but the mystery as to why he's leaving is another story.
Everyone just kind of feaked out and began acting very quiet and mum --as if there was some crazy crap taking place as Walter's reasons for leaving. Most curious, my PIX spies mumnle out, Vern Glenn, the #1 sports anchor at PIX, himself.
*ADD KRUETZ, via Dan Ashley on Twitter. The anchor/house politician on ABC7 [paid tribute to Countess Kruetz. Nice of him, only some cynical Circle7 off-camera thought it was sort of mass whimpering by the ASH man.
Use your own imagination.
last summer in sack of tomatoes it was 116 with a cold snap of 109.
ReplyDeleteHRH Queen Julie showed up at KTVU. Something must be afoot.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Any indication on why she decided to show up to work? That’s very unlike her.
Delete1:53PM You must be new to the Bay Area otherwise you'd already know that Haener only shows up to work when she has nothing on her social calendar or nothing else worth doing. Going to work is always her last resort.
DeleteIn any event, welcome!
She heard the rumor she had been replaced by ChatGPT.
DeleteCan Kruetz please take Lena Dunham, I mean Howlen back with her to Sac. She makes my ears bleed in the mornings.
ReplyDeleteCharlie Walter was pretty good in my opinion. Has a lot of energy and personality in the sports world. As I indicated on one of your posts a few weeks ago, it sounds like it was a management decision that they decided to go in another direction. Likely he got fired from KPIX and it was likely contract related as well.
ReplyDeleteI hope he gets hired on another station, soon. Even Paul Heggen mentioned on Twitter after sharing his posts that someone should hire him. He had a very good rapport with the anchors and meteorologists and liked his crisp reports.
Now it's down to Vern & Andrea. I'll tell you the circus part of sports was completely unnecessary from Vern. That doesn't count. How much of a clown can that sports director be...just stick to sports. Andrea is mostly doing double duty on weekends as far as sports are concerned. This might be the case until they can snag a new sports anchor. At the same time, Gianna Franco can also cover sports quite well, we've seen her fill in on a few occasions, with the last time being in December. So can Ryan Yamamoto, otherwise I'm expecting they snag an extra sports anchor at some point.
That’s been Vern Glenn’s schtick since Moses was in short pants. Without his Mr. Involvement days he’d be a weekend sports guy in Eureka. He’s like the goofy coworker that tries really hard to be likeable.
DeleteAnswer to your question per KPIX twitter. Matt Lively from Waco, TX market is their new sports guy.
DeleteLike Rats leaping off a Sinking Ship, this is the shape of things to come. Call it “The Curse of the Titanic”, but at every TV and Radio station in the Bay Area, get ready for a Tidal Wave of turnovers and “sinkings”.
ReplyDeleteThe Chronicle makes Liz's departure big news, so everyone has to follow? Does anyone have news sense any more? Barbara Walters she ain't.
ReplyDelete2:53 It's not just the Bay Area. I've got friends in LA and Miami who tell me it's pretty tense--like everyone is wondering if they'll still have a job there in a couple of years.
DeleteI saw Walter's last sportscast, on PIX. Glad you addressed the subject of his departure. Is he leaving the Bay Area, or just KPIX?
ReplyDeleteHe left KPIX a few weeks ago. His wife Kylie Mills works for kron 4 as a sports anchor the main reason why Charlie moved in the first place:
DeleteHe's likely leaving the Bay Area unfortunately. The station made a mistake not hiring him permanently
DeleteHe’s gone Forsure. think he has the stuff to be in New York or network. All these layoffs at ESPN are coming. Don’t be surprised if he winds up there
DeleteKylen Mills left KRON several months ago and is currently freelancing. I suspect they'll be leaving the Bay Area as soon as they find work for both in another market.
DeleteKPiX has had trouble keeping sports anchors, Remember when Dennis O’Donnell mysteriously left, now Walter. Lively is another version of Walter, but not as country cornball
DeleteBad boys, bad boys, whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
ReplyDelete(New ktvu theme song)
Seriously???
DeleteThis is quite likely the dumbest joke in the history of jokes.
Awww...I liked Charlie Walker. He actually had a little personality and seemed like a cool dude who meshed well with his co-anchors. I guess the days of the stability of sports anchors in the vein of Wayne Walker (RIP) are long gone.
ReplyDeleteSeems like sportscasters are an afterthought at most stations these days. The only one that I can think of that's left is Chris Alvarez over at ABC 7. He's pretty decent as well. You can alway tell when someone is authentic when seemingly all the players and coaches have a good rapport with them. Alvarez has that with the Warriors. They seem to actually like him. (And he doesn't steal jackets like former sportscaster Mike Shuman. What were you thinking, dude!?! )
Larry Beal over at ABC 7 sort of swims in both waters now. Former full time sportscaster waiting for Dan Ashley to retire so he can be overlooked for the position as they find someone new. lol And Raj Mathai has sealed the anchor chair over at NBC Bay Area. (Janelle claps!!! lol) So...RIP to the era of the sportscaster. (As if KTVU reporter Jesse Gary doing double time as sports anchor last year wasn't a clue.)
Long live Jesse Gary, ktvu sports dude extraordinaire!
Delete100 bucks says Kreutz takes a gig in SoCal.
ReplyDeleteI miss John O'Reilly
ReplyDeleteSF media is like that old punchline: I can't hear you, I have a banana in my ear
ReplyDeleteWhat’s the big deal? The boys over at ktvu were just doing some innocent locker room talk!
ReplyDeleteCharlie Walter was ok at KPIX. His wife Kylen Mills does some Pac12 network hosting/reporting. Maybe they stay here in Bay Area. Who knows but I do believe 'PIX hired Matt Lively from Waco, Tx
ReplyDeleteSaw Phil Matter on KGO-TV ABC7 News Bay Area discussing the DeSantis visit to SF. Is it just me, does Phil not make any legitimate news anymore? He comes across like the complaining "Karen" we've seen on so many social media posts. I remember when Phil used to actually do things to help news viewers years ago, but I guess that role is Michael Finney's. How does Phil contribute to "Building A Better Bay Area"?
ReplyDeleteWho is Tim Johns @tim_johns_ on KGO-TV ABC7 News Bay Area? He seems to be the first-at-bat reporter for prime time local news, but his presence and vocabulary are lacking and dumbed down. "Guys", "You Guys" -- is he still reporting from Bakersfield?
ReplyDeleteCharlie Walker is leaving because he can't hold his head straight. He's always standing sideways with his head turned looking into the camera. Annoying as hell! He should get together with the former weather girl/woman, Mary Lee. She always tilted her head to the left like her hair was so heavy she couldn't hold her head up. They'd be a perfect pair for each other.
ReplyDelete@2:54PM - It may be true but that's a dumb reason that I'd consider. And so far Mary Lee has not "officially" left. Once in a while she still fills in on weather and does a tremendous job. If she really left, they have to find another weather person, who is supposedly not Hackney. Btw - Hackney has not shown up the last 2 Saturdays on air and Andrea was running both the show and sports on her own. Is this a possible sign that Hackney could slowly be moved to primetime or even worse, retire? He is 65 as far as I know, it's possible since the recent anchors at KPIX retired at that age.
DeleteI'm sure lots of people have done that, but the reason is contract related, though I wouldn't be surprised if management told him off about this.
Brian Hackney is by far and away the best news anchor in the Bay Area, including all stations. Best at doing weather, too. I would hate to see him leave.
DeleteHaha, that’s what I thought too! He seems like a nice enough guy and knows sports, but I could never figure out why, even if directly facing the camera, he’d turn his head. Why? Does he think one side of his face looks better on camera than the other one? It’s distracting and vaguely annoying.
DeleteWhen he is anchoring alone, like today, he will not introduce himself after mentioning live from the CBS Bay Area studios. Almost all other anchors will do that in their solo shows, whether or not they're filling in. This has been a problem ever since August last year when Juliette Goodrich left the weekends. I think also on Jules's show, she still greets her viewers most of the time and gets right to the news. Maybe it's different if we see Hackney and Jules anchor together on weeknights. Management should consider moving him there with a generous package/pay.
DeleteMe too, and if anything, I would like to see him trade places with someone like say, Sara Donchey. Sara can do weekend evenings (if she's able to) and let Brian have the 11PM timeslot and probably anchor with Juliette Goodrich on weeknights. He deserves the primetime gig. In the past we have seen him anchor for primetime but not very recently except Labor Day night (11PM).
The only few good anchors I enjoy on weekdays are Liz, Reed and Juliette. Hackney should be on primetime if CBS management at some point can offer him.
Weather - Yes, he's good, has more personality and humor compared to Paul Heggen (who isn't terribly that bad either, he is good minus his fashion sense). There are things he doesn't go that much in-depth on that Peck or Heggen will do, so it's nice that Peck is his weekend weather pet.
