Having been through a lot of these legal maneuvers Cumulus has either lost big time or even when settling, taken a bath and then some.
They will not play nice this time for the Copeland suit. The former KGO host sued Cumulus last January on the age and race discrimination. Copeland, namely his attorney, Angela Alioto, is priming for a settlement but Cumulus will drag this process on for years and years. They want to set a precedent within their roster pool that lawsuits fraught with questionable accusation will be met with stiff delay tactics. In this case they (Cumulus) have plenty of ammo nixing Copeland's complaint.

Copeland will never see a dime for years and years unless Alioto can coax the Cloud Company into thinking wasted legal fees is a far cry from a potential jury trial in San Francisco with a sympathetic jury --Copeland's only leverage but that's years down the road and unlikely; advantage Cumulus.
If only he had talent.
ReplyDeleteHe has melanin. Good enough.
DeleteCumulus should not settle. Were this to go to trial and a jury to hear that Cumulus employs both of his children and has two talk show hosts(Rothmann and Thurston) well into their sixties, even an SF jury will see this shakedown attempt for what it is.
ReplyDeleteBrian,Brian, Brian....hang it up, dude. You are making a fool of yourself. You got the boot because your ratings sucked...that's how radio works, or haven't you noticed? One day you're there, the next you're filing a lawsuit. REALLY? Good luck, mi amigo.
ReplyDeleteOnly a black could even sue in the first place. Could you imagine the laughter if a white person (or Asian, or Latino) said they were fired from their radio show for any reason *other* than the ratings sucked? The judge would laugh them out of court. But if you're black and you've had a bad day, everyone has to listen, nod sympathetically, pat you on the head, and promise to call Al and Jessie to make things right. Blacks can never just have shitty lucky. They float on the ether, and fart Calvin Klein fragrance.
DeleteThe other night I went into a restaurant and was ignored by the staff (black, by the way) for fifteen minutes as I stood there. They had tables, they had servers, but they were too interested in...I don't know what exactly. I thought to myself I wish I were black. I could sue.
Meanwhile Cumulus has finally gotten rid of their clueless EVP of Content Mike McVay, tapped by the Dickeys to help drive the company into bankruptcy. Among McVay's many non accomplishments was hiring terminally unemployed Randall Bloomquist to run the entire talk division. We all know how that worked out.
ReplyDeleteWhat took them so long? Didn't Ronnnn love McVay? That guy sounded like the biggest fool idiot. What a horrid long record of decrepitude that company foisted upon us all!
DeleteGood question, Mike McVay was a Dickey hire that helped drive the company into bankruptcy.
DeleteIt's obvious that Copeland's playing the race card. However, I'm sure he will say in court that KGO fired all the black talk show hosts and only employs white hosts.
ReplyDeleteBrian Copeland needs a good lawyer.
ReplyDeleteHe may have a strong case.
He should contact his best friend Ronn Owens for a referral.
Very stupid move by Copeland. What is he thinking? He'll probably never get a job in this industry again.
ReplyDeleteI feel fortunate, that I never heard of him, have not listen to KGO since the early 90's.
ReplyDeleteHe’s a boring host, I did liked headliners on the headlines. Anyway Bri trying doing what most people in radio do when they lose a job. Move to a different market or start a podcast.
ReplyDeleteMcVay is one of the countless people who seem to be able to fail their way to the top. I don't know how they do it, or I would have tried myself! Is there a book on this hidden away somewhere in the Radio section of a library!?
ReplyDeleteIt's called the Peter Principle. The expression goes, "He rose to the level of his incompetence."

There are countless examples of failing upward in radio, John Hogan at Clear Channel comes to mind. They finally sent Hogan packing but like with Mike McVay, not before he'd driven the company in the ground and made bankruptcy inevitable.
DeleteOnly Brian Copeland would walk into the 7-Eleven on Petaluma Blvd. South and threaten to sue if he didn’t get a discount on large nachos and a slurpee. Cheap Bastard.
ReplyDeleteNext thing you know, he'll claim he's going to kill himself, yet again. He has been making money off of "depression" for decades. It's his other race card. His children are biracial. The daughter has produced his show and others for years, all unsuccessfully.
ReplyDeleteCopeland could gain immediate creditably by saying he'd donate all proceeds from his case (should he get any via a settlement or trial) to charity. Then he case would come off less as a money grab.
ReplyDeleteCopland should commit a fake hate crime against himself, I know of a couple of bodybuilding Nigerians that have experiance.....

ReplyDeleteI dare you to say what you wrote...to a Black man's face.

ReplyDeleteIf you gave the racist, hate filled vibe while out at the restaurant, like you claim you did, I would have also ignored your snowflake ass. With hopes that you don't return.
Why does Brian Copeland look so mad in the picture?
