The Mysterious and Bizarre Natasha Zouves' Situation at KGO-TV; Confirmed She Fell on Set after Hair Mousse Exploded; In 4-Inch Stilettos!; Ronnnnnnn Owens Snubbed Wattenburg Passing; Giants' Kuiper and Flemming 'On Assignment' Crap; Bach Off KGO Short List of Weekend Sports Anchor Gig; Gabbert isn't Starving; Tuesday Wire

TUESDAY WIRE

THERE'S NO OTHER WAY TO DESCRIBE IT: The people at KGO-TV, at least more than a few, are mystified over the recurring incidents that have hit morning anchor, Natasha Zouves.

The latest, exclusively confirmed to me by an ABC7 spy, is her falling on the set; in 4-inch stilettos mind you on some hair mousse that exploded on the floor!

Oy vey!

The fall, which was both frightening and debilitating, has rendered Zouves to the DL list; no word on when she will return.

Zouves, who if she didn't have any bad luck, wouldn't have any luck at all, has had several health maladies and battles with KGO personnel in the past.

The latest is deemed legit because it happened at the 900 Front studios; other MIA's have plagued the Bay Area native and KGO sources are worried that there's something far bigger to fry on Zouves' personal chart.

Whatever the case, staff is both concerned and somewhat befuddled --probably Zouves too.

*When Bill Wattenberg died a few weeks back, there was not a single word from KGO host, Ronn Owens, not a word. Owens is not alone. In fact, several veteran KGO people and media people who worked with Wattenburg one way or the other did not offer condolences.

Bill Wattenburg
But the Owens' snub was most biting because he and Wattenburg were close friends. Owens routinely had Dr. Bill on his show as a guest many a times.

*KGO Plus: I'm hearing now that the vacant KGO-TV weekend sports anchor gig is probably "someone you're not seeing on the air now."

My source says the gig, vacated by the axing of Mike Shumann, will involve an MMJ (multi-media journalist) candidate, out of the market.

So, for the moment, Mindi Bach, who's been doing the bulk of fill-in, is off the short list.

*ONE OF THESE DAYS the local TV stations will do more then just superficial out fronts for the coming fall season. That is, they'll hire better reporters and anchors and provide Bay Area viewers some substance over style. They keep dropping market size which isn't their fault but they can juice up the product and make things more interesting.

*IF I were ADVERTISERS on the Giants' radio and TV (cable) broadcasts' paying pretty good coin, I'd be supremely PISSED OFF over another lame, "On Assignment" status. (Crap really)

As Scott Ostler of the Chron pointed out today (Tuesday) both Duane Kuiper  Jon Miller and Dave Flemming will be absent in Cincy this weekend and also the first Mets game in NY on Monday.

Huh?

This is becoming a certified joke. Giants' broadcasters take more days off than the shop steward at the local Teamsters office.

So you'll have Jon Miller and a cast of Larry Baer's extras. How cool is that!

*At one of the big PR firms in the city the other day, a longtime employee; a real good one in fact, was called into the bosses' office and read the riot act for reading this site on company time.

Holy Moly!, if I had a few extra bucks I'd buy the guy lunch.

Anyway, thanks for reading --sorry your boss took offense.

He probably voted for Trump.

*Jim Gabbert could buy KGO and resurrect a little bit of magic. He wouldn't do something like this for fear of losing money. It's a nostalgia thing. And by the way, even if it would to fail, Gabbert would still have 300 Million in the bank. He's not starving anytime soon.

  1. If the Giants annoy you so much go try to listen to the A's. You might enjoy the bush league broadcast. And its Oakland. You're an Oakland boy. Bush league all around!

    2. I can't say much for the A's tightwad ownership, and they need a new stadium or an upgrade to the Coliseum, but as far as the teams go, the A's are more exciting, younger, and much better than the Giants, just look at their records. And their broadcast guys are much better also, unless you like over-the-top "homer" announcers.

    3. @6:15 Who sponsored this trip back to the 1970s? Greg Papa said on his show today that Al never should have brought the team back to Oakland.

Besides, 2 of the 3 teams are gone forever from Oakland in the next 2 years. Adios, equipos!

    4. I tried watching an A's game the other night on CSN. I was reminded of the old Wayne's World skits from 1990's SNL. Between those announcers and that Dallas fella with the beard they feel brings in viewers...no...sorry. 5 minutes of my life I can't get back.

    5. That "Dallas fella" pitched a perfect game in the major leagues, what have you done?

    6. Now I remember that Dallas fella. He cohosts or cohosted "Dialed-In with Dallas" on Barstool radio. Wait, wasn't that the same show that garnered criticism nationally about some comments about an underage Chloe Kim? Oh yea, thats the show.

.50 cents will still only buy him a small sized Snickers at Walgreens. Me too.

    7. That history of champions is hardly indicative of a Bush League situation, 9:18. 6 of those titles occurred after the '70s; 3 were won in this decade. And if respecting and revisiting a team's/city's past is passe, then why do the Giants do it so frequently? You know, those same Giants who were 0 for their first 52 years in SF? Those same Giants who lost a Bush League 98 games last season, and who have a record that is decidedly inferior to the A's again this season.

BTW: Bob Lurie's and Peter Magowan's patience, loyalty to the area, and willingness to lose money are primary reasons why we still say SAN FRANCISCO Giants. After years of grief, Lurie eventually ran out of patience and loyalty. That, and some derailing corruption within the 1992 prospective ownership group from Tampa Bay (who offered considerably more money for the Giants than Magowan and Walter Shorenstein). As for teams leaving town, I doubt that the Niners will be returning to SF anytime soon. And this Warriors to SF situation is a train wreck waiting to happen. I'm sure the new Arena will be nice, but who is going to pay that kind of money for tickets and deal with the traffic nightmare when the team returns to on-court mediocrity?

Had Papa remained on as the Raiders' announcer, I doubt that he would have made that remark. Greg has been a little disgruntled and dizzy, lately.

    8. Some Giants fans act like the 70's never existed so we can't bring it up. I was there and I saw the A's win in 72/73/74, it was quite simply some of the greatest baseball ever played, and as a young teenager growing up in Oakland it was exciting times. And in 1989, oops, can't go there also, they get really upset at that one, they'll blame the damn earthquake like Roger Craig did.

    9. I've read many articles stating that the A's shouldn't have even been allowed to come to the GIANTS market in '68 in the first place. The Giants could have protested a bit more and we wouldn't even have these clowns. It hurt the team financially. You're welcome for your team, A's fans.

  2. Ostler's column says that Miller and Fleming will be gone:

"Booth moves: The Giants’ broadcast crew will sound different on this road trip, for three games in Cincinnati and the first game in New York against the Mets. Play-by-play duties will be handled by Rich Waltz, former Marlins’ caller who’s with MLB Network. Jon Miller, who’ll get a break, and Dave Flemming, covering the Little League World Series, will miss those four games. Javier Lopez will handle commentary duties."

  3. First, I'm Not a Psychologist.

Each person, case, or cases need to be taken individually as there are truly debilitating single accidents which occur. (Natasha Z., if you're reading this, I'm not talking about you. I'm just posing a general possibility to the readers for anyone they may know.)

But have you ever come across someone (whether at work or just someone you know) who was seemingly, perpetually sick or injured? Let's remove folks who consciously are trying to get a workers-comp claim before-the-fact. For example, a person who's out from pneumonia; breaks a leg; gets into a car accident; gets into some other accident; etc.; one after another all in a short period of time.

There's probably a medical name for it and I suspect it's stress-related; perhaps a result of a previous traumatic event; and could be a subconscious way of telling a person his/her career, employer, life-style, relationship, etc. is not working for them. Life can be tough. If you know of someone, even if it's yourself, get some help/counseling.

This live-tv-news-industry seems to have several stories of personalities who, seemingly capable & employable, are just not with us, at least temporarily.

As a viewer with no inside-track, I never know if someone is merely on vacation, quit, fired, injured, or relocated to another career or station. Thanks to Rich L., many of these stories eventually become known.

    2. @5:15 I'm not either, but Freud's ground-breaking work on neurosis, which it sounds like you are describing, has been largely discredited. These episodes are largely cyclical and will pass with time. They are not a life adjustment requiring counseling, or "a subconscious way of telling a person his/her career, employer, life-style, relationship, etc. is not working for them." It is not a matter requiring $500 per hour (or whatever the going rate) office visits once a week for years with a psychiatrist. In fact, I know of two individuals who spent years with psychiatrists and actually ended up worse off in the long run.

  9. I'm curious if the Giants just give the announcers more time off instead of paying them more money. Figure adding one fill-in announcer, maybe on a per-game basis is cheaper than giving raises all around. And those announcing gigs are pretty sweet.

I can somewhat understand Wattenburg not getting much of a mention on KGO. Didn't he do a lot of his shows from his home? And he was a weekend guy to boot, so I doubt they had much interaction. The Owens thing though - that's weird.

  12. Ronn Owens is a scum sucking bottom feeder, and he looks out for number 1. Wattenburg leaned right and is therefore perceived as toxic. Acknowledging his passing, whether he was a friend or not, would mean Owens would have to stick his neck out and become a target for the unhinged Left. Of course he is going to protect his own a$$.

  13. I don't have a dog in the fight over A's-fans-vs-Giants fans. I didn't grow up here, and don't really harbor any negative or positive feelings about either fan base (I grew up in San Diego...lived in Atlanta and also Chicago.

That being said, I do prefer the atmosphere, believe it or not, at Oakland A's games. A's fans are a bit more mellow...friendlier in a genuine way...and are not annoying. GIants fans, on the other hand, remind me of my days going to games at Wrigley: Giants fans are "Cubbie-fans-West." A lot of corporate types...yuppie types who arrive early just to eat, drink, and socialize...and then leave early to hit the nearby eateries and brewpubs.

I see a lot more families at A's games. I see way more Silicon Valley-type singles/Bros/dates-of-Bros at Giants games--who spend most of the game taking selfies or hunched over on their phones/iPads.

The Coliseum is rather plain-looking compared to the beauty of AT&T Park, however. And 66th Avenue/Hegenberger is a lot more seedier-looking than SF's Embarcadero area.

But I have more fun at A's games.

If the stove do explode, we see the disability connection and claims. I doubt she is badly injured maybe a sprain that will get her back in two weeks. If Alioto-Pier, former SF Board Member can go to work with her wheelchair, Natasha can if she is on a wheelchair.

  20. Giants announcer situation will be very interesting if Miller does retire. How much ESPN time will the Giants allow Flemming if they want him as the lead play-by-play voice for a couple decades? Would the Giants leverage the Greg Papa availability when it's time to replace Miller?

Of course if the Giants want to seriously entertain Papa in their future, the current crew certainly is providing the club with opportunities to run him out there for a trial.
