415 Media Exclusive: Mike Shumann Mulls Legal Action Against KGO-TV Over Alleged Warriors' Theft Incident; Says Whole Affair 'Was Total Misunderstanding'; KGO/Warriors Didn't Buy Excuse; Shumann 'Lawyers Up'

IT WAS THOUGHT TO BE A MUTUAL PARTING, right? But we all know behind the scenes it was anything but.

Until now.

415 Media has learned, through multiple sources aware of the situation, that former sports anchor, Mike Shumann, is "highly considering" legal action against KGO-TV, the ABC local station which essentially fired him back in April following an alleged theft incident with the Warriors that ultimately spelled his doom.

Shumann was caught on video in San Antonio at the end of a team practice that shows him taking a jacket and then walking away --its images with various shots of Shumann looking around the scene and then leaving an almost empty arena with jacket in hand.

Shumann denied the story outright and said the whole thing was "a total misunderstanding."

I concurred.

In fact, the whole bizarre drama had almost the entire KGO newsroom in a total daze because Shumann, a 24-year employee at the station, had never been in any sort of trouble nor was he ever accused of something so damaging or seemingly out of character like this incident in San Antonio where he was immediately sent home by KGO with the Warriors' organization approval.

It turns out there's a more recent explanation.

Shumann, according to 415 Media sources,  told both KGO brass and Warriors' team officials:

he took the jacket when he left the practice because there were no other Warriors' personnel present and he grabbed the thing because he wanted to return it to the security guy (really, Steph Curry's main security guard) to whom it belonged.  But when Shumann went under the stands to find him, the guy wasn't around. So Shumann took it back with him to the hotel, with the intention to give the jacket to the guy the next time he saw him -- at the game.

Soon, he was sent home from San Antonio and not so long after was taken off the Warriors' beat leading eventually to his leaving KGO in a mutually agreed-upon decision.

Only now it's learned the decision was rushed up and that Shumann denied any wrongdoing and feels he was thrown to the wolves. And even though his tenure at KGO was clean and that he had a solid relationship with Bay Area sports teams he was nevertheless sent packing.

KGO officials didn't buy his excuse and worrying about a backlash with a key sports client; a partner that directly provides the station with millions of dollars of revenue and national exposure; KGO quickly disposed of Shumann.

  1. Good for him. I mean it. Trixie spends more time dealing with lawsuits than she does news these days. She must know half the lawyers in SF on a first-name basis.

  2. Wasn't everyone shocked when the players pounced on him, thinking he would get off because, wait for it...wait ...wait ...wait, cause he's white..?? We shouldn't call owners owners...to much like slavery - Draymond

    3. Plus, I am fine Shuman was let go. Unless some new information comes out. He says that we would return it. However, he's looking around then walking over, to me, is suspicious.

  5. If Shu was black, the players would have blamed his theft on social injustice and taken him on clothes shopping spree with a CSN camera crew in tow.

      If Shu was black..."

Well, he's not. So stick to the facts which are that Shu was caught on video leaving the arena with an item that didn't belong to him.

  6. He must have had a Warrior's PR reps number on his phone, surely he should have called and said, "He one of the team left a jacket in the arena and I couldn't find security so I picked it up." Let me know what you want me to do." That just seems really obvious. Taking it back to your room and not messaging anyone says that at the very least you weren't doing anything that made sense.

    1. You act as if the jacket was the effing maltese falcon or a tiffany superbowl ring..It wasn't. and isn't.

    2. I agree, but why wouldn't you just call someone? He could have scored some Brownie points with the team.

You agree with what? 3:29's gibberish? If the jacket wasn't the "effing maltese falcon or tiffany superbowl ring" why did Shu cart it all the way to his hotel room? No one puts in that much effort for a simple jacket.

  7. Save the money on lawyers Shu. Ain't winnin' this one. You took too long to come up with a story. Would have been 100% believable and understandable if presented soon after incident. But. you ...

    1. You're not that ignorant that you couldn't take the time to read the whole post. Go back and read where Rich reports that Shu informed ABC and the Warriors organization what happened, immediately.
Only God is the ultimate judge.

    2. I've been looking. I can't find the reference that he called immediately ANYWHERE. If so, then i apologize.

Rich wrote nothing of the sort. But, if that's the extent of your reading comprehension, it's clearly not 5:24 who's ignorant.

  8. He can take legal action but he has no witnesses, he never called anyone, it's just his word against what was shown.

    1. Dear 1:28, His employer, who should be sued, had no witnesses that he did anything illicit. The assumption that a super bowl ring winner and prominent longtime broadcaster for a prominent television station would deliberately steal a stupid jacket, never made any sense in the first place. It was easily explained. You need to learn about context and video snippets. I believe Mike and I think he has a good wrongful termination case. I think KGO dumped him because he wouldn't kiss the warriors' collective ass.

    2. Shumann was caught on video, taking possession of someone else's personal property. Long after the fact, and after there were negative consequences, he claims that he was doing a good deed.

His status as "a Super Bowl ring winner" and "prominent longtime broadcaster for a prominent television station" doesn't give him the right to steal. And the only thing stupid in that video is the entitled jackass who is walking off with someone else's clothing.

      Delete
    3. dear 7:10 , You are correct, no one has the "right" to steal. However to adjudge a circumstance so utterly, having seen only a brief bit of video out of context, just means that your judgment is premature. Schumann always said there was a simple explanation for what happened, from the very beginning. You just weren't willing to listen. I mention his football career because he'd already achieved the pinnacle. He wasn't some desperate fanboy eager to swipe a piece of cloth for its alleged contagious magic. Let it play out in a civil suit. Why would that bother you?

    4. Thieves come from all walks of life. From desperate fanboys, to more statured individuals with other types of pathological problems. They often have "simple explanations" to rationalize their behaviors, especially after being caught in suspicious situations.

Sadly for Mr. Shumann, his impulsive (at best) or larcenous (at worse) actions have caused dire consequences in regard to his career and overall reputation. He is the one who is truly bothered, and for good reason. Not me, as I am just someone offering an opinion on a message board.

Yes, Shu may have his day in court. If so, it really will be interesting to see how it plays out! Hopefully, for him, that explanation is cogent.

  9. So, NO ONE was around?? Yeah, right. It was completely empty. Just call the PR dept for Warriors. I really already forgot about the guy. Mike who?

Spot-on. Yet, the apologists can't seem to grasp even a whit of what you've stated.

  11. So he is so concerned that somebody "lost" their jacket he goes out of his way to grab it, can't find anyone to give it to and takes it back to his hotel room.. Laughable.. He stole the jacket... He knows he stole it but now comes up with a story to save face and try to makes some "damages" money.. Not a soul around to give the jacket to... Oh, let me take it back to my room and I'll try and remember to return it tomorrow unless nobody happens to ask me if I "found" a jacket.. Thief caught on camera, plain and simple..

  14. Assume that the Dubs will be a witness for KGO's defense team. Don't know what the end result will be monetarily, but the W's will make clear again that Shu is not and will not be welcome, the players will especially see to that.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree. He has Warrior PR people on speed dial. Just call them up and say, "Hey someone left his jacket here". This whole deal is a no-win situation for Shu. If he wins a little money, which is certainly possible through negotiations to avoid a trial, what other outlet is going to hire him? He's forever known as the sportscaster who stole a Warriors jacket.

  16. I got terminated from Disney myself for something I did not do and I had no history of evil and was a great employee like Mike Shumann.

Disney HR was very unprofessional. I proved my innocence with evidence and after being put on paid leave, they investigated my case and still terminated me. What a joke.

I did my own investigation and I am 10000% innocent.

I hope Shu gets them in court! Go get them Shu!!! it's no fun to be railroaded but now I'm living my best life and it was a blessing in disguise.

  17. He absolutely should sue KGO. An inconsiderate and rush decision to get rid of hard working and loyal employee. He needed that jacket like a hole in the head, just trying to be a nice guy and win some browny points with Steph.
    Lets get real people$

  18. Question for the Shu apologists:
What is the "simple, innocent" explanation of why he took someone else's property?

  19. He should have just left the jacket where it was. It wasn't his so why take it and walk out?

  20. this just gives me PTSD and reinforces the fact that you are never too old "to get in trouble" even if you have devoted 24 years of your life to a company and have never "been in trouble before"....it's a freakin' piece of material, so really? a man gets canned and swiftly, over a Jacket? I am not familiar with the politics and the seemingly sent down to this flying rock by God to be worshiped basketball team....his doesn't pass the smell test.
