KTVU's Heather Holmes Wants Prime 10 PM Co-Anchor Chair Only Julie Haener Isn't Going Anywhere Soon; Sunday 415 Media Mash

Clearly, Heather Holmes is itching to become the heir to co-anchor at KTVU's prime franchise, "The 10 O' Clock News" --with Frank Somerville. Only one problem: Julie Haener isn't going anywhere and figures to be there for the foreseeable future, much to the chagrin of Holmes.

A few years ago under the Cox Media ownership, Holmes went to management and essentially gave an ultimatum: "either get me a primetime spot or I'm outta here." She got her wish and moved out of the weekend and into more weeknight work but only on an interim basis.

Today, Holmes profile has risen at the station and she is frequently on the weeknight KTVU news platforms, especially at 5 and 6 but she really wants 10 PM and wants to be permanent. Again, that's not happening anytime soon whether or not HH pushes it. She seems to think she's one of KTVU's stars and by virtue of fan mail and viewer (male) feedback, she's on target.

That said, I've never figured out Holmes' appeal; I acknowledge her fem fatale looks and demeanor but that doesn't make her a special news reader. She's adequate at best and completely overrated. She frequently stumbles reading the teleprompter and isn't the best ad-libber, which given KTVU's Happy Talk format, is important. Furthermore, Holmes is a terrible interviewer and looks foolish asking dumb questions on Channel 2's talk-back segments on Breaking News stories.

Much of her appeal comes from the middle-aged, horny-male Fremont-Burlingame-Walnut Creek demo and while that's important in today's local TV News domain, it's not paramount. Moreover, Julie Haener isn't exactly washed-up and looks just as splendid (if not better) as Holmes does. Plus, unlike Holmes, Haener asks better questions and is much more adept at ad-libbing, advantage Jules.

Perhaps the wildcard here is Somerville, the veteran tonsil who clearly likes and respects Haener but is sensitive to Holmes position. Ultimately, it is Somerville whose feedback might dictate the ultimate decision but that's a long time away.

  2. They both fill the same slot, niche, mold, demo's.

Julie's not retiring any time soon. Somebody has to pay her huge water bills.

Heather could lead at KPIX. An idea.

    1. The way I look at it is at least she pays her own water bill.

No apartment dwelling where she can use ungodly amounts of water with no restrictions and complete anonymity as the owner foots the bill and they are not individually metered in the units.

Stan, do you have proof that the anchors you admire and covet are water wise? May I see this proof?

  3. She's only big in Fremont-Burlingame-Walnut Creek?

    1. You forgot Heather Holmes' huge Hispanic and Black male fans. They're always trying to sweet talk her on social media. It's hilarious. Most of the time she just ignores them.

    2. Oh,is that why they are calling everybody Holmes? Yep,they must love her. I hear that all the time. Cheech even mentions her...

  4. Why don't they move Somerville to weekends and 5 PM? Problem solved.

  5. Haener wins hands down for journo-chops...but Heather wins in the fan-service area.

    1. Haener has no "journo chops," believe me. Neither does Holmes.

  7. "The 10 O'clock News" brand is officially dead. RIP. KTVU needs to go full Foxification and just call it, "The 10."

  8. I don't understand what the fuss is about. Claudine Wong is the number one female at KTVU. Claudine needs a larger platform than she now has. Heather and Julie both will wait in line behind Claudine. Don't be surprised if Fox management takes Claudine national.

    1. Agreed. Holmes is competent. Haener is good. Not even a contest. Holmes can come across as very robotic at times.

  10. Julie is on tonight at 10PM. Looks like her time off last year for a few months made another staff famous trying to get the main spot. That anchor was her temporary replacement. Too bad, one morning anchor off for maternity leave on KPIX who I like did not replace that anchor, but got the other male anchor, let go, currently on KTVU 2

Even Sandya Patel is on tonight, KGO 7 Sundays.

  13. I used to have to decide whether to watch Heather or Peggy Bunker on the weekends (sometimes it depends on what they are wearing). But I think Peggy won out (she has a better figure also). Now I can watch both (since HH is on weekdays now), but I still prefer Peggy.

  14. If one of FOX's Texas affiliates has a major late night news anchoring slot available, maybe Holmes should just go home to her native state. Then problem would be solved. Oh, really? FOX doesn't solve problems, they only add to them?

  15. More hash- KNBR had Bloomberg news a few years ago start doing reports..then Radnich pissed then off putting down Charlie the Bloomberg man who retaliated by calling Radnich a shock jock. So,after Bloomberg left,KNTV Scott McGrew started doing bizz reports. A few months ag he was replaced by KCBS's Scott Budman who I guessed works cheaper.
He's gone and McGrew is back.
So,how does that work? McGrew and Budman are lowering their prices in a duel to the death for KNBR work?
Is it also a sign of how KNBR will cut anybody- no loyalty to save a buck? Well,of course it is.
I thought this little drama needed some light.

    1. KNTV's Mike Inouye also occasionally does traffic reports on KNBR in the morning's so it may be a deal with the station.

  16. I could think of some other Bay Area cities that would also be prime middle-aged, horny-male territory, but I won't name them, for a lot of people here (who don't fit that demographic) live in those places. Sometimes you wonder if that is the most important local-news demographic of all these days.

  18. As soon as we see Heather Holmes on the news we switch her off.
Always posing, can't say anything off the cuff except platitudes, fumbles reading. We used to watch her just to laugh at her malaprops. Then we just could not stand her anymore. Julie Haener is terrific.
