The only reason I listened to Papa & Ryan was Tom Brady was doing the TV call - Brady is weak, as far as his radio chops are concerned. Donte Whitner is 10,000 times better than Brady.
That TD call sucks! It's fine if he uses that call when it's a winning TD in the fourth quarter, but it's way over the top for the first quarter vs a team like AZ or the current version of NE. The call just reeks of "look at me."
Used to enjoy Papa on the radio when he did the Raiders games, but I since the beginning with the NINERS everything seems contrived and not authentic....it's as if he manufactures his enthusiasm for the team and game.
Disagree about Papa's use of schemes and nicknames. The people who listen to sports talk have some sports knowledge, and the people to tune into the flagship 49ers station will know something about schemes and nicknames. Papa brings some annoying enthusiasm to the show for sure, but the way he breaks down a game with his guests is always entertaining.
Me too. I try to memorize as many of Kyle’s nickname formations and plays before every game so I know whatever the hell Papa is talking about…NOT…. 4:51PM is probably his KNBR sidekick “whatever you just said” bud Lund.
@9:44, if you're familiar with Papa, you would know that he explains a lot of what he says. However, it doesn't sound like he's trying to teach anyone anything - it sounds like he's trying to prove what he knows about football, almost in an arrogant way.
Papa calls the worst games ever along with Fan Boy Tim next to him. Papa is running his mouth with all his BS after the snap and during the play. The guy thought Trey Lance was the next great thing and that Jared Goff was overrated.
Had to listen to Papa driving back from Oregon. An impossible listen. He broadcasts as if his audience is watching the game with him. Instead of basics like telling us the score, the yard line the down etc., he goes into fanboy/opinion stuff in the middle of a play (things like 'how did he get so open'). Arizona completed a long 3rd down completion and Papa never gave the yard line. Worse, after Purdy's final interception, Papa stopped doing play-by-play. Arizona still had two kneel down plays...but Papa never bothered to describe it...rather he started commiserating with Tim Ryan. Papa is truly awful. For god sakes, Bob Sargant, find someone who announces the game.
It’s october 7, time for all the crybabies with their victim mentality to come out of the woodwork
ReplyDeleteI had to listen to second half of Niners game on KNBR. Can't believe how bad Papa was. And the replays of his t.d call are cringe worthy.

ReplyDeleteAgree. Brady has been a $375M bust so far. Whitner is so knowledgeable that turning him into a broadcaster would seem like a waste.
DeletePapa does his job as Jed York wants him to. As for Ryan, his picture should be in the dictionary next to the word HOMER...AND NOT SIMPSON!!
