CBS SF Moves Up a Notch; Scott Warren in Demand

26 comments:

  1. Darren Peck is back on the 9PM version of the Primetime Edition. One thing I noticed since early last month is that Darren has also stopped wearing colorful ties. Whereas Devin Fehely & Brian Hackney still do. At least Peck doesn’t wear jeans or has a bad color combination of jacket & pants. If Paul Heggen loses the jeans on air completely and matches the color of his “Spring” blazer with the same color pants he will look very polished even without a tie.

  2. Scott has sold himself as an innovator but the truth is he's jumped the shark on the virtual weather graphics idea. Yes it's a gimmick but it's just not set up with the viewer in mind who, at the end of the day, just really wants to know (and be able to discern quickly) what the temperature will be. Weather people marching virtually thru the Bay while the actual weather info is under their feet or on a screen so far behind them that you can barely read it is not functional. It's just toys for toys sake. That doesn't gain you new viewers as the numbers clearly show.

    1. Conceptually it is a failure and a turn-off. So much so, that I don't bother. Kyla Grogan at KRON delivers an excellent and concise presentation.I don't need nor want a peripatetic weather person tracking a studio floor. It's unnecessary. You're right! It is just a toy and an annoying one at that.

    2. I get lost in all of that 3D stuff too. And the forecast at the end is very strange with plants? I don't get it.

    3. She's good and I also like John on KRON in the mornings. He's cheerful.

    4. Kyla Grogab worked at the weather channel

  3. Paramount/CBS laying off 15% of workforce. That should help morale.
As far as rating bay area TV Stations:

    1. KPIX
    2. KTVU
    3. KRON
    4. ABC-7
    5. KNTV

There are some good, some bad at every station - and some that make you wonder “what were they thinking???”

    1. I can't agree with KTVU anywhere but last. They don't do news anymore. They just cover press releases. With real stories other stations will have interviews, lots of information. KTVU sends a stringer to spray it and they read the copy from a fax. They have to devote their actual reporting apparatus to more "important" things, like a memorial for a little brown girl who was killed when she ran out into the street to get her ball, or the closing of a "Bay Area landmark"...some stupid Taqueria no one outside the neighborhood ever even heard of.

    2. KPIX - Shawn Chitnis left recently and I wonder did it have something to do with the lay offs? He was a good reporter & anchor.

I’m wondering if Sara Donchey is also out too? The reason I wonder is if there is any contract they got with the station (i.e. 3 year contract).

Ryan Yamamoto is not there at noon anymore but he is there at 5pm but he will be in Chicago for the Democratic National Convention.

  4. My favorite videos of yours are definitely the ones where you rip like it's going out of style. I like them because they're entertaining first and foremost, and just as important, you never make it personal or go below the belt. It's always fair, deserved, work-related critiques.

  5. Dislike the CBS weather people walking around on the fake floor. It's distracting.

    1. Not only is it distracting, it adds no value. The most important part of the weather segment(the forecasts) have terrible graphics too.

    2. Fake Floor is right…pure dreck. They try giving it perspective by making HALF MOON BAY look big, and santa rosa small.
It’s some nitwit’s idea of a new view. Give me the old style 63 in the Sunset, 99 in Cloverdale, 73 in Oakland, 87 in San Jose, hotter n hell in Brentwood.

    3. I don't get the point of projecting things so that some of the numbers are obscured, too small, or the meteorologist walks in front of them. I just want the information, thank you. So I go to my phone—the thing that the suits ironically created this graphics-heavy weather segment to get me to avoid doing!

    4. They changed a number of things. Position of the graphics where it’s not straight, 3D climate prediction outlooks (nice) but it should still have a header for 6-10 or 8-14 days. And satellite needs to show Day/Time moving like always otherwise it’s very difficult to plan our day.

Now 3D weather is on all 7 days of the week, at all hours. Brian Hackney quoting Zoe on saturday night “Do you know I used to do the weather, for my entire career?” when he was surprised that nowadays the computer can cause some technical difficulties.

Is it a possible sign that he is on his way to completely retiring out of KPIX? To me it sounds like his meteorology role is eliminated (right?)

    5. And Sunday night 11PM, Brian whispered "I used to do it for a living". Basically he did say how much of rain he had in Sausalito since he had some measuring gauges at his home.

Either Brian Hackney's signs of retiring or maybe hopefully promoted to the weeknights. Seriously, why not put Brian Hackney to replace Sara Donchey at 11PM and/or pair him with Juliette while they let the meteorologists like Darren, Paul or Zoe do the 3D weather.

    6. One more problem I noticed is the way the 3D maps of the radar loop are presented. As much as they’re nice they’re missing the day/time. This needs to be enhanced or just show it on the big screen.

They have to really work on the tubes to show First Alert Weather Days labeled.

  6. Hey Rich: Love the new KPIX reporter Veronica Macias, great addition!

  7. Although I don’t care about Sara Donchey a curious question, where is Sara? MIA for at least 2 weeks or sweeeping changes to come in September?

If she is leaving or getting demoted, they need to consider renaming the Late News as just the Evening Edition. It’s nice but awkward having it be dedicated to just a specific anchor.

  8. I like Sara and Zoe on KPIX

    1. Zoe is good. I personally don’t have any complaints. She is on Primetime Mondays and Tuesdays. It might be a harbinger that she may sometimes also fill in for Paul Heggen on some days & other days Darren if Paul is off for a week. That way nobody has to over work for 7+ straight days.

    2. Sara yes, nay on Zoe, don't brighten my day like Burch

    3. According to archive.org, Sara Donchey has been off the air since July 26, 2024. This is a 3 week+ off. Sure most folks will take time off, but this is a little absurd. It's nice to see Juliette or Devin fill in, they're great.

Is she now doing a MIA like the way Veronica De La Cruz did years ago? Some information would be appreciated, Rich.

    4. Zoe did say on her IG she is filling in all week, so that means now the Primetime Edition is screwed up. Paul's forecasts are pre-recorded for that & also yesterday, I found out that 8PM news is a total repeat at 9PM. I know this because at 9PM they showed 8PM views and the stream was labeled as Previously Recorded. No problem on the stream, but if you're gonna have news for 1 hour, put the other 1 hour to something else or give that time to another station.

    5. KPIX is very short of anchors lately. For 4 weeks of Sara being out is crazy. If she is really MIA the rest of the month without an indication she is coming back, they should just remove her name from the late show and name it as Evening Edition like the weekends.

If Sara is indeed MIA, there are a few who I think would be qualified to do the 11PM news:

Juliette Goodrich & Devin Fehely who usually fill in are great candidates.

Brian Hackney - If he is no longer doing weather and just doing anchoring & science reports, they need to consider him!! Pronto. That’s provided he’s not retiring at any point yet.

Andrea Nakano - 2 years ago she filled in on many weekday occasions for the 11PM news and did a stellar job at it. She dresses professionally, a no nonsense anchor and can report and anchor very well.

Or seriously, promote Liz Cook back to 11PM.
