Jon Miller-Giants MIA Gets Murkier; Two Weeks Gonno; Press Corp Mum

  1. This is a non-issue. He's entitled to take time off. The fact that he's able to take time off during the season is the sole responsibility of mgmt. Point the finger at mgmt, not Miller. He doesn't need to reveal anything to anyone, except mgmt.

    1. Yes, just appreciate whatever weeks we have left to enjoy Miller, AND Kruk/Kuip for that matter.

    2. Agreed. The Giants have a strong rotation of announcers that easily cover for Miller. Half the time I'm listening on radio and he's on TV, or vice versa. And Rich thinks Jon Miller is overrated anyways, so even if he was on the air Rich would be ripping him.

  2. Let’s see…We are MIDWAY through the 6 month season. Giants have 80 games to go. Jon Miller is a HOF announcer and likely negotiated a mid season break in his contract.
The “dog days of summer” are approaching, does anyone want to call games in Houston, or DC, during July and August? Why do you think Congress takes AUGUST off? Brutal heat AND humidity.
My guess is Miller pulled rank and took a cruise toward Alaska so he could catch his breath

  3. Looking at that Instagram screenshot you shared and I can’t help but wonder if Miller is “transitioning.”

    1. Your broadcasters for tonight’s Giants game: Dave Flemming and Joanna ‘Ms. Thang’ Miller.

    2. 5:50 PM, don't talk smack about Flemming. He's a great announcer. We're lucky to have him.

  4. I guess you were "on assignment" when you disappeared last week.

  5. First, Miller being off isn't the end of the world. The game is still on the radio. You, me and the audience may not care for the backup broadcast crew that much, and we can speak to that by turning off the game. The team and Miller must have an arrangement or it wouldn't be happening. That's their business. It's our choice when it comes to consuming or rejecting what the team is putting on the radio for us to listen to on game days.

As far as the press corps goes, they report on the team. They aren't media reporters. The Athletic has several media reporters who could dig into it if they think their is a story there (which I don't think there is). You've pointed out many times that the Chron doesn't cover the media. Sports writers in general don't give a "rat's ass" radio or tv announcers - who they view as inferior species in most cases anyway because they don't use a keyboard. And, there may not be a story there. Miller just might have a "sweet" contract that lets him work when he wants. Being a Hall of Famer does have it's priviledges.

Really Rich, it's going to be OK.

  6. Jon Miller is awesome.

  7. The A's Ken Korach is in the same boat. He doesn't work that many road games anymore. It's probably signs of a retirement not too far in the future.

    1. Spot on. The travel can be grueling. Teams sometimes don't get into East Coast cities until 2-3am, so definitely not ideal for someone in their 70s.

  8. I do research for 10 MLB teams' broadcasters, and it's not at all unusual for guys to take multiple weeks off this time of year...Bob Carpenter of Nats is off until after All-Star break; Ben McDonald of Orioles took 3 weeks off to do ESPN college baseball; Matt Underwood of the Guardians has multiple weeks off scheduled.

  9. Doesn't he already get 5 or 6 months off every off season?

  10. Can you do an update on Alice 97.3? On air talent have disappeared a la Jon Miller.

  11. You didn’t mention his absence at the Willie Mays tribute on Monday
