An Old-Style KGO at Heart: KSCO Radio in Santa Cruz Moves The Needle

  1. Thoughts on KYI? I've been listening since KGO died. It's definitely different but they are so obsessed with the Bay Area (not always positive) it's almost like they broadcast from SF. A few of the dj's are from the bay area

  2. I used to pass that station when I drove the Santa Cruz bus back in the day. Love the building's art deco look and glad it's still looks like a real old timey station!

  3. KSCO was at its peak right after the KGO destruction. MZ brought in Dr Bill Wattenberg and had a line up of decent hosts including that old fossil Charles Freedman and his stale record collection. Nowadays he pipes in syndicated shows on the cheap while he travels the world with Yoko Ono. I know you won’t post this comment because you are indebted to MZ and you’ve previously stated you won’t comment on KSCO at all.

  5. Dead on 12:17! How does Rich compare KSCO with all it's piped shows to that of the old KGO, which had but a few (Money Talk, etc.) on the weekends.

  6. KSCO was way better at onetime, Then MZ started pushing supplement pills, later he went on to beg-a-thons, then he fired his local talent and brought in syndicated shows. Best part was MZ's mom, Kate who ripped up Ray Taliafero once on the MZ show.

  7. If Michael Zwerling wanted to make KSCO a force to be reckoned with and heard, he'd have to have local talent and let them do their thing. Micky Luckoff understood how to have hosts with greatly different points of view, not tell them what to say or not to say, and let them bounce off each other. This creates a heartbeat, a sense of expectation that KGO embodies so well in its heyday.

  8. The death nail for KSCO was when Zwerling went head first into the Trump Train, then when it started to backfire (via community blowback, lost advertising etc.) he tried to back pedal going so far as firing popular right wing host Georgia who actually sparred vs Lieberman when he was a host. But it was too late and eventually Zwerling had his own KGO style mass firing and got rid of everyone including long time manager Rosemary Chalmers. As others have mentioned it got even worse when he met his current love interest and former Chinese communist camp prisoner Amy Hao aka Yoko Ono. It appears she convinced him to drastically cut back on the station.

    1. Exactly right! The funny part is now MZ gets annoyed whenever politics comes up when he himself was parading a MAGA hat all over SF while living there. Suddenly he and the station are trying to be “neutral”…yeah right

  9. Bill Martin seems like a nice guy that would give cover his buddies like Frank Summerville and Mark Ibanez while they are "grooming" the female interns.

  10. #1 MZ comment, he’s not a self made man, living (and burning) threw wealth created by his mom and dad.
