Meanwhile, Folks are sopping up Malaria tablets for the River Islands Regatta and Boob-Tube Show. Copes efforts to whip a dead horse to victory were undercut by his kooky chortling, and Gobbling of Tolbert’s Nutz. Copes has a bright future as an assistant manager at BK. I wish him well
$80-$90K is barely survivable in the Bay Area. It's almost all rent money. That's another reason to do a sports podcast instead. You could do it from home anywhere, with very little overhead.
After tax thats about maybe 60k take home, 5k per month. Average 1BR rent in SF around 3k. Even with a roommate that leaves around $800-900 per month left over. That explains the dreads, haircuts are expensive
10-12 years ago one of the KNBR producers who occasionally did host fill-ins (maybe Ryan Covay?) said he was making minimum wage at KNBR, and the only reason he and other producers/hosts were at KNBR was because they loved radio.
I gave up listening to sports talk years ago when all they do is interrupt, talk over each other, jump from one topic to the next. Tom T. can't ask a damn question without blabbing on and on and finally shuts up to let the person talk. And dont' get me started on their podcasts... listening to Bob Melvin show or the wrap and starts out with 2 commercials and then 2 minutes later two more commercials, esp for a 4 min podcast. And the volume of the commercials blasts your ears. The listening experience is ruined.
Who cares? Terrestrial radio is dead. Had KNBR embraced narrow-casting or podcasts 10 years ago, they might still be relevant.
Just like how record labels rejected embracing new technology 25 years ago when Napster happened, radio died by not embracing podcast technology until it already beat them.
KNBR's main issue is their lack of talent. Sure, terrestrial radio is dead, but KNBR also streams and has a YT presence. They would be fine if they put out better content.
radio, if you do a little googling, is far from dead. What goes on in the Giant broadcast booth, with Jon Miller free-lancing at his own will, and the much younger Fleming even flakier, during an after the game chat talking up how much fun he is going to have away from the games taking in a golf tournament! I am insulted. Worse yet, the ultra light weight ego P.D.S., who obviously is a gifted suck up, enough! This is suppose to represent the best the Giants can give me? Chaos on absenteeism spells getting the finger from Larry. B. The overall image: Crap.
Numbers don't lie. Over the last 10 years, as podcasts, streaming options, and SiriusXM have flourished and expanded, terrestrial radio has vastly contracted. That's also something you can see if you do a little googling.
Weekly terrestrial radio listenership in the U.S. has remained relatively stable in the last two years after dipping slightly in 2020. In 2022, 82% of Americans ages 12 and older listened to terrestrial radio in a given week, according to Nielsen Media Research data published by the Radio Advertising Bureau
Good career move. He was put in an awkward position and was unfairly blamed for the talent purge that happened when he took the position. I'm thinking more personnel moves are coming up and he doesn't want to be the fall guy again.
No program director in America makes personnel or major program changes on their own today. That kind of power disappeared with consolidation. Today’s PDs research, suggest direction and personnel changes, and then implement those moves with the blessings of corporate management. I do have a major problem with your statement that “radio is dead”. If you look at the Nielsen cumes, millions of people listen to the radio in the Bay Area alone!. The major problem radio has is debt from over expansion during the consolidation frenzy. Cumulus is broke again and attempting to stave off a takeover. The attempt will fail. When the new company emerges, Cumulus SF will probably no longer exist. It will be someone else’s problem. BTW, your take on LA sports radio is off base. 570 AM barely tops a one share and ESPN 710 can’t get to a one even with the Lakers. Disney turned the management of the station over to Good Karma Broadcasting.
Dopey Copes and the rest of KNBR are all on their way out. Hey Adam! The gravy train is over and you see the writing on the wall. Maybe you'll hang on until preseason 49ers football but you aren't going on any road games on the station's dime. Read this clearly... THE HAY RIDE IS OVER DOPEY KOPES! Giggle giggle giggle Same goes for Brian Murphy and his intern co-host.
Seems like Copes' txts, emails and golf outings didn't impact his job as much as his xeets. On that platform, he often takes on the persona of a 12 year old raging against the world. Or mostly his competition and the Dodgers.
And after some crowing about the ratings uptick on May 16, with some tweenish jocularity aimed at The Game and a media trade blog, the former 95.7 GM who now owns that influential eponymous media trade blog on May 20 published an extensive post that meticulously went through Copes' timeline and detailed all the childish things he does there, with the theme of how a station leader needs to present himself -- i.e not like a 12 year old.
Coincidentally, Copes "quit" 3 days after that was published.
Other media reports are citing Copeland’s inflammatory social media posts as the main factor in him leaving the PD position, and suggest that it was not his decision. Why haven’t you mentioned that issue, Rich?

Good no loss.
ReplyDeleteCopes realized he was unqualified. He's not good on radio, period.

Man, after taxes, that's basically money for rent and a few bills. That's all.
DeleteDamn, now I feel bad for Copes. $80K is not good money for an on-air personality.

ReplyDeleteThe article of SF gate said KNBR beat The Game in every time slot but Rich reported The Game beat KNBR. Which is it?
ReplyDeleteThe son of “not a genuine black man” turned out to be “not a genuine program director”. Will the giggles continue?
ReplyDeleteKNBR is ahead. Rich has been spending too much time in the bar at River Islands schmoozing with Patti Reising.
