Larry Baer's Desecration of Giants; KNBR Radio Broadcast Friday Night

  1. What Baer and Miller did is exactly what Marty does with that Mosquito Islands housing project out in the middle of nowhere that he shills for every 10 minutes. When Marty brings on a guest - to discuss baseball - they spend the first 4-5 minutes engaging in a totally scripted conversation about Mosquito Islands. He did it with Ron Wotus recently and also with Bill Laskey. It's embarassing.

  2. Have you ever listened to Marty Lurie? He does the same thing with some housing development out near Modesto. A good chunk of Marty's programming is a commercial for this place disguised as baseball programming.

    1. That's different though. Marty's show is partly supported by River Islands, so the promotion helps fund the show. Baer interrupted a broadcast to promote an outside interest. Like Rich said, the promotion went over an inning and completely ignored the game. It's somewhat forgiving on the TV side, but not on the radio side.

  3. Yeah, not going to lie, it was kind of awkward when Kruk and Kuip had Larry Baer on the telecast last night when he was discussing the new China Basin park across the street from Oracle Park.

I remember in the past whenever Kruk and Kuip would have on Larry Baer, it was always more celebrated what he was promoting whether it was something at the ballpark or anything to do with Mission Rock across the street, etc.

The Giants have had PR nightmares the past few months (the Renel situation and how that ended, Farhan's construction of the team, lack of sellouts for weeknight home games, etc), and I think even Kruk and Kuip couldn't really drum up too much excitement with China Basin park given the controversy with the tiles that people had in that area that posted about their loved ones who passed away, that were taken away from that area.

But yeah, it was awkward to have Larry Baer on the telecast last night given the Giants recent controversies off the field.

  4. Patrick Bailey hits a bottom of the ninth walk off homerun to win the game. Everyone's happy and they get to enjoy a planned postgame fireworks show on a chilly and windy friday night.

That is the only thing that will be remembered about last nights game.

  5. Baer was even worse on TV. Two half-innings of his shill marketing with no interest in the game. Pathetic.

  6. I didn't listen to the radio broadcast, but Larry did the same thing on the TV side. It was blatant advertising better suited for a pregame segment. On a side note, I didn't know the Giants had any affiliation with the Mission Rock properties. I thought the land was sold when they got rid of the parking - parking that's desperately needed now.

  7. That area is a couple miles from attractions like the Tenderloin. Did he play that up? I guess the Embarcadero is nice to walk but where are you going to buy groceries? I think the one nearby left. Well, the disguised sales presentation could not have been less interesting than the mediocrity on the field to call.

    1. @1:47- There's the Safeway down the street from the ballpark and across the street from the 4th and King Caltrain station.

Also, around that area you have kind of those newer age Whole Foods type grocery stores where you see yuppies and tech people at. LOL

  9. Ah, River Islands. They never talk about the traffic, the heat or the PG&E bills.

  10. LB is an ugly, obnoxious, preening jackass who does not translate well on TV. Kuiper seemed noticeably irritated and uncomfortable. Krukow handled the company line well, as usual. That was a long, painful advertisement for a project that Giants management cares more about than the team.

    1. @9:19- Yeah, that was one of the first times where Kuiper seemed kind of annoyed with Larry Baer. It just felt like an awkward appearance for Baer given the controversies surrounding the tiles in that area that I mentioned earlier.

  11. Every pro sports franchise is a business, but Larry and the Giants have always been the most upfront about it. They are only interested in separating you from your money. It's like rooting for laundry detergent or a used car.

  12. Speaking of ads, the Professor and Marty are talking about River Islands. STOP already.

  13. Rich, in the old days, when the FCC had rules, the station would have gotten in trouble if it was NOT a scheduled commercial. Since Jon is a Giants employee, perhaps he has a piece of the action in the project. I know he moved out there, near the park, a few years ago so perhaps he is an investor who had no trouble with a FREE, NON-SCHEDULED Advertisement, since it may be putting money in his pocket too.

  14. Baseball is a dead sport, nobody under 50 even watches it. I just yawned thinking about it

    1. This is far from true. The biggest age group for MLB fan interest is age 35-44, and the second biggest age group is age 18-34. It's cool that you don't care for baseball, but don't spew falsehoods. Facts matter.

    2. You are correct the biggest age group is 35-44 (per MLB) But 18-34 has 42% of 'don't give a rats a**' So saying that it's the second biggest is true, but very skewed. FACTS MATTER!

    3. @7:25, read your original post. "Nobody under 50 even watches" Not only is this not true, but fans under 50 account for the largest age group of fan interest. Look it up yourself.

  15. Have to remember the City of San Francisco would not fund building a ballpark for the Giants. The Giants had to scramble putting together an ownership group that would pony up the money. Part of the deal to entice investors was to include additional land to be developed. Net-net...a good deal for investors and the city. Re. parking...there's plenty of street parking, small lots and public transportation. We don't need huge tailgating style parking lots.

  16. OT comment here. I think Cumulus is blowing it big time by completely de-emphasizing the 680 AM signal making all deference and reference to the 104.5 stick. Why? Because 104.5 has a crap signal that is not useable much of the nine-county bay area. I live in Monterey County so 680 AM is my only way of listening to KNBR but while in San Jose recently I was surprised at how crappy the 104.5 signal is. It got me thinking that KNBR has given up their greatest advantage over 95.7 - the massive signal (doesn't fade out or get full of static) of the 50,000 watt blowtorch that is KNBR 680. I can drive anywhere around the bay area and listen to a perfectly clean signal on 680 AM - you can't do the same with 104.5. Now Cumulus basically is competing against 95.7 with a signal on 104.5 that is just as crappy as 95.7's. Goofy thinking coming out of the corner offices at Cumulus SF.
