My Two Cents

A MAIN PROBLEM, among many at KNBR: having to talk Giants baseball when the 49ers and NFL are KING. Baseball isn't the red meat, talk-showise, that the NFL is and while MLB is still seen as an old guy's sport, the NFL is regarded as both younger and far more compelling. And it is.

Plus, a side note: think gambling.

*Add KNBR: the station of giggles: Papa's, *Greg), inexplicable giggles; Copeland's, (Adam/Copes) hyena-laugh giggle every two seconds; John Lund's ass-kissing laugh after each lame Papa joke.

*BOTH KNBR and FM, "The Game" 95.7, no matter their worth, are on pins and neeedles because their corporate owners--Cumulus and Audacy--are BOTH on borrowed time with massive debt and fiscal chaos.

*Out of all its O and O's, CBS has devoted the most cash in its rebranding to KPIX (CBS News/Bay Area)--several MILLIONS.

*I'm sorry, the Jessica Burch experiment at KPIX and KCBS is an abject FAILURE.

*Ray Ratto: still the crummy curmudgeon who somehow still gets KNBR love even though KNBR has NO RATINGS.

*Trouble in paradise: NBC Bay Area's VAST morale issues in San Jose--a good reason, impending layoffs courtesy 30 Rock coming soon.

*This just in: Dan Ashley is NOT Mick Jagger.

*Yes, radio is DEAD. At least AM talk-radio and that's a damn shame.

*Proving you can be pitiful even when your beyond pitiful: KCBS, just a TOTAL ABOMINATION.

*Jocelyn Moran: I don't get it, what's the big deal?

*KTVU: even Marin housewifes don't watch anymore.

*Julie Haener, now more than ever, EXPOSED.

*The "Indian Walter Chronkite", Raj Mathai, proves one thing: timing is everything.

*Steve Moskowitz: oh, please, just STFU!

*Damon Bruce and Larry Krueger: really, truly, nobody cares.

  1. Re: KNBR talking Giants vs. 49ers. I dunno, I've been hearing a LOT of 49ers talk. Papa spends a lot of time on 49ers, as he should being as close to the team as he is. The other shows talk a lot of 49ers too. Yes, they do also talk about the Giants, as they also should. It's the Giants flagship station. Some people are listening to the station because they are the Giants flagship, and they want to hear about the Giants. And baseball is a nearly-every-day thing, so there is new content to talk about almost daily. Yes, football is king in many ways, but you can only talk about training camp for so long.

  2. Ray pulled no ratings on 95.7 and was fired along with Bruce. Bruce went to Youtube and the leadership at KNBR said "We need more Ratto!" and brought him back. It won't be long until Damon Bruce is back.

Every time a national news outlet comes to SF to report on the massive crime in SF and is robbed while in San Wokecisco, a Republican gets its wings.

  6. Oddly, I did not see Rich mention anything about WOKE. Maybe you need to find a different venue for your sophomoric opinions. Most of us who read Rich’s column are getting inside information on the radio, tv, newspaper scenes. Even a clueless clown knows WOKE is a tired trope used by the intellectually bereft.

    4. While the term "woke" originated in the mid-30s, it entered mainstream vernacular in early-10s by left-wing activist types, particularly on Black Twitter, to raise awareness about injustices against black Americans.

It's now a pejorative to describe overzealous, insincere, emotionally incontinent activists masquerading as informed citizens; caricatures of themselves who don't even know it, pandered & marketed to corporations as a means to gain market share.

  7. Rich,
When will KTVU get their new studio up and running? They've been running out of a temporary one all summer. If I had to guess, likely in September when they debut their new 7pm "West Coast News Wrap" and 7:30pm news on KTVU 2. Any thoughts on this?

  13. Baseball was king when the Giants were winning all those world series over a decade ago. Since then times have changed. The internet has evolved and basically every stat you need is right at your fingertips via cell phone. Video killed the radio star?? Well the internet is about to do the same to the sports talk host.

Stopped listening to am talk radio after KGO AM went off the air. It's a dying industry about to go the way of the newspaper. Even The Game on 97.1 FM is kinda boring to me. Can u imagine getting paid big bucks to basically sit around and talk about athletic men all day for a living. Nice work if you can get it, I suppose. But overhyped and played out, imho. They're just gifted athletes, folks. No more. No less. Game over. Next.

Don't get me wrong. I like sports. Loved all those those Giants/Warriors/Niners victory parties over the years. But my philosophy is you play a game...Somebody wins and somebody loses. Outhouse or Party. And then I move on with my life. And think about underpaid teachers who basically have to dip into their own funds to supply their students with basic needs. Or school lunch programs that yank food from starving children who can't afford to pay for it. And it puts it all in perspective. Priorities. I know.

Anyhoo...Shout out to athletes like Steph Curry who seem to be authentically genuine in their effort to give back to underserved communities. He's a fascinating, unique, one of a kind athlete deserving of all the accolades and sports talk bromances. Wish there were more like him and more balance in all things. The women athletes deserve that same kinda love, too. Jus' sayin'.

  14. Seeing as tho Rich is commenting about KNBR, the Giants flagship station, and seeing as tho Giants manager Gabe Kapler has inserted himself into many "woke" causes by taking knees, commenting on social issues, etc..."woke" is very relevant in this discussion. Put on your big boy pants.

  17. Do people really listen to football...on the radio? It's appointment TV for many. Baseball is made for radio and it's not appointment TV until the playoffs. Baseball is way more important to KNBR, as it should be. As we know the Bay Area only jumps fully on board with teams if they are winning or contending for championships. With (finally) some good young talent, the Giants will be back soon.

    1. Hell yes I listen to football on the radio !! I do not have a TV. There are some announcers who can genuinely call a game - Kevin Harlan - and then there are some decent announcers, and then there are ones who lull you to sleep. IF I had a tv, I would turn off the sound and turn up the radio.
One real drawback is when the producers don’t have the right mix of crowd noise and announcer - that can ruin a good (and bad) broadcast. No, I do not want to hear Ernie from Antioch scream at the referee.

  18. Jocelyn Moran is excellent in several ways. First, I can still remember when she first came to KPIX now, around two years ago, and I was immediately struck by how good she was, even back then, at reporting. She has improved immensely since then and she has pretty much gotten a makeover too, compared to how she looked back then. She looked good then, but now she looks like a successful reporter/anchor. She has big brown eyes, and she is shapely, with the ever=present "winnebagos", that are delightful.

    1. Ms. Lisa Argen is the proud owner of the most underrated "winnebagos" on Bay Area television.

  19. Burch is hot, man! Are you kidding??Dump lecturer Peck and put her in.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Peck’s attitude is bad at times. He can’t even stand jokes filling in the Morning show. He was like what is this, come to the morning show to make the weatherman dance on Tuesday. He also has no humor.

Make Mary Lee or Brian Hackney a morning fill in and let Peck sub on evenings where he won’t get this much attention.

I love Burch in every way possible. If KPIX can give her the feedback to talk slower and not block the screen then I am sure she will listen and improve.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you. Peck—he’s not the only one to do this, but he’s perhaps the most extreme example—insists on making such a huge drama about everything. It’s ridiculous, especially for the Bay Area, which has a climate much more gentle and moderate than most other places. Give me Brian Hackney anytime.

      Delete
    3. My expectation was that Darren Peck (like no September he has filled in a morning show in over 4 years now) would not be on the Morning show this month. And guess what happened? He came yesterday morning, and he still can't lighten up any jokes. The thing is he is happy to fill in at any time (evening, holidays, morning, whatever), but he puts more drama than what needs to happen. Last year in September, when Paul had covid or was on vacation he filled in for many days, and I can tell you, evening he seems a lot more comfortable.

      Here's a reference to the incident from archive.org (5AM on 8/29): https://archive.org/details/KPIX_20230829_120000_CBS_News_Bay_Area_Morning_Edition_5am/start/1968/end/2028?q=idalia

Yesterday he also caused drama to the point he can't even take a joke for dancing. Link to yesterday's archive.org clip:
      https://archive.org/details/KPIX_20230915_120000_CBS_News_Bay_Area_Morning_Edition_5am

If I was the management, I would talk to Darren about how to handle this kind of attitude. There is a gentler, yet more polite way to handle it (maybe say something like "we can do it after the morning show is over"). And not only that, but I would restrict him to NEVER EVER being a weekday morning fill-in. If Jessica Burch must be out, you have Mary Lee, otherwise bring in Hackney, he would probably love to have some fun and he can take the humor very well. I would say, if you want to fill in, you have the weekday evenings, where it sounds like he's more comfortable doing and he won't have to deal with so many crazy and silly requests or jokes because it seems that he's pissed right on air about it, which is rude and unprofessional. Paul Heggen, even though he's the Chief, can lighten up and handle the humor well and a little more politely.

KPIX needs to really beef up their weather staff and not always put Peck as a morning fill-in.
