It's Official: Justin Allegri is New Cal Football Play-by-Play Broadcaster --With a Nod To Next Move

AS I PREDICTED not that long ago, Justin Allegri is your NEW Cal Football play-by-play broadcaster.

Allegri will take over for retired Cal football pbp broadcaster, Joe Starkey.

The competition was close.

In the end, it was Allegri and that's all good from my view.

MORE STUFF...

With Cal hiring Justin Allegre as the new radio play-by-play voice for Golden Bears Football and Men’s Basketball, Allegre’s former employer San Jose State can lay claim to this title: Cradle of broadcasters.

Current A’s lead pxper Ken Korach served as Voice of the Spartans in the 1980s. Former Stanford game caller and KCBS sport director Hal Ramey and soccer TV man John Shrader also paid their dues at SJSU.

Now who knows their way to San Jose to replace Allegre with 3 weeks to go until the Spartans kickoff football season. SJSU might want to look across town toward Santa Clara broadcaster Anthony Passarelli who also handles TV duties for the Earthquakes.

Three other options also exist at Santa Clara’s WCC rivals, Saint Mary’s and sometimes A’s broadcaster Alex Jensen or at USF, longtime Men’s Basketball caller Pat Olson or experienced Women’s play-by-play broadcaster George Devine. All would be great, plug-and-play options for SJSU.

Allegre might want to watch his back at Cal. My sources tell me former Basketball announcer Rich Cellini is beyond angry over losing his courtside perch and being passed over for a promotion to the football booth. And if the next round of ESPN layoffs leaves Roxy Bernstein unemployed, he might try to squeeze into Strawberry Canyon

  5. Who cares about crappy Cal or douchy Stanford. The PAC 12 is dead and gone.

    1. Good riddance to UCLA and USC AND Colorado. 3 crappy teams for several years, and while CAL and Stanford are weak too, at least they didn’t give their players huge salaries like USC and UCLA.
College football will quickly become semi-pro, and it will all be on pay per view. At one time the free education was the most valuable thing a school could offer - and it is still a great deal !! But nowadays, Joe Blow quarterback, wants $2.1 million or he is leaving USC for Okie State.
Money will ruin the college game. USC has been blatantly paying players for years. Just ask Marin’s own Pete Carroll.

  7. George Devine Jr. has years of collegiate broadcasting experience and would be a great hire.

  8. Pat Olson would not be a good play by play announcer for Spartans football. Leave him on 1050 where no one but die hard Dons fans can listen to him. Goooooooooooooodddd!!

    You nailed it!

  10. Here's another product of San Jose State's "cradle of broadcasters." Pat Hughes, who calls the Chicago Cubs games on radio, went to SJSU in the 1970s. And he entered the broadcasters' wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in July.
