KRON Staple: News Lost in The Wilderness; Eternally Classy Emerald Yeh; Pam Moore Golden Parachute; Fake Persona KTVU "MO2"; Shine Off Castaneda; Liz Cook Displeasure at KPIX; Menconi Out at KCBS; Kruetz Bye Bye ABC7 (KGO)

IT COSTS A LOT OF MONEY to do news.

Of course it does. But you make your mark too.

Which is why it's sad, (again) KRON --via Nexstar--is apparently lessening its news presence. There's no official new schedule but you can be sure, news is on the back burner.

It's far more lucrative for Nexstar as they rush in the CW Network. Can you hear the excitement?

KRON used to be the "Bay Area's News Station"--even in its post NBC affiliate days, KRON's staple was news. And today, that could be its singular virtue. But no sir.

*Pam Moore will leave/retire KRON not only rested and breathing easy, but financially pleasing. In addition to a normal union retirement, she'll also pocket a generous golden parachute from corporate. Timing is everything.

*We're a Top-10 market, (#6-TV--#4-radio) yet we have zilch for 24/7 news. Which is why "Bay TV" was so cool and special.

*Emerald Yeh, as classy and news savvy as they come. A KRON relic still enjoying life today in the Bay Area.

She didn't have to wear short skirts and leather mini-dresses. She oozed news seduction and PRESENCE when the camera turned on and there she was delivering the news.

*Then there's the extreme opposite --the vastly insincere, fake-personality, disingenuous folks at KTVU in the morning.

A collection of people with INFLATED egos, mass indifference and overall lack of conviction and passion.

Other than that, they're fine.

*Jumped the shark: Sal Castaneda. You used to have a personality, Sal, and show some emotion. Now you're a bread crumb making small talk with schmucko, Dave Clark.

Clark has all the warmth of a Santa Clara Motel 6.

*ANOTHER KPIX damsel-in-distress? Liz Cook is supposedly LIVID over the direstion of the station --or lack thereof; Cook's none-to-pleased by her waning influence and overall image of being perceived as yesterday news.

Memo to Cook: Juliette Goodrich is #1. It could be worse, Liz, you could be Anne Makovec being passed over multiple times (for primetime)and stuck in neutral.

LATE UPDATE: KCBS loses Keith Menconi, a multi-year GSA reporter and KGO (ABC7) says bye-bye to Liz Kruetz.

  1. Every media outlet in the Bay Area is going on the cheap. Why pay reporters and big salary anchors when most of us get our news from “ push alerts” all day long? Why make us cringe through some journalism school dropout “ reporting “ on the latest tragedy when all you need to do is send someone with a camera phone or tablet and let us watch the live feed? Hell, only folks I tune in to watch are Peck and Patel…him, because I always learn something, and her, because I want to see what she’s wearing today. ( The lady knows how to dress..woooooo-eeeeeeee

  2. Right again Rich, Emerald Yeh was always in top form and she had gravitas. A real gem !!

  3. That’s a little shocking. Liz Cook is beautiful but does a better job in her delivery than say Sara Donchey. I wonder if this has to do with the changes that happened in September…KPIX demoting her to Noon & 5PM. Only seldom we see her fill in at 6 or 7PM for Jules now and then.

I still think Jules is #1 but why not pair them both together at 6 or 7? That would be a better idea.

  4. KRON's all evening storm coverage during times of particularly dangerous weather benefitted the Bay Area community in spades. Apparently storm-safety is less a priority now.

  5. Ooooh, Rich, leather mini-dresses. Mmmmmmm……

  6. So sad the days of Emerald Yeh, Wendy Tokuda, and Jan Yanehiro are gone, and replaced by these Instagram hungry journalists? fishing for likes.

    1. Yup. There’s the look at me field reporter at KPIX that couldn’t carry Emerald Yeh’s coffee cup.

  7. Liz is getting jerked around for no good reason. How can anyone think that Sara is more qualified than Liz to be the evening anchor.

    1. I’m telling you, I can’t find the same qualities between Donchey snd Liz. KPIX should really shuffle their anchors especially at 11PM and pair another with some of their current solo newcasts.

A few that come to mind - Devin Fehely, Betty Yu, Max Darrow, Brian Hackney (take him off the weekends, for God’s sake), Andrea Nakano (she should switch places with Sara during the weeknights), Wilson Walker.

Some of these excellent anchors are under utilized.

  8. Sal should stick to traffic. No need to see his creepy face on air.

  9. The way KPIX ignores Anne Makovec is criminal. Then again, they seem to have a unique gift for neglecting their good people (Hackney, Cook, Makovec) and lavishing attention on amateurs (Yamamoto, Donchey, and Emmy-whore Da Lin). Den dere’s dat guy for who English is a seis lengua…se llama José Martínez. Best joke on their website: “José Martínez is a bi-lingual reporter…” Right, if he’s bilingual then so am I. And I’m not.

    2. Add to the good people - Devin Fehely, Andrea Nakano, Betty Yu. All underutilized & wasted on weekends or just reporting. Lauren Toms & Kelsey Thorud are good too but I prefer Lauren.

Especially Hackney, he should be on during primetime, at least a pairing with Goodrich or at 11PM. If there was something called CBS News Bay Area with Brian Hackney at 11PM on weeknights, I’m sure we’d all be happy. He has good chemistry with everyone and especially sports anchors as well as Darren Peck & Paul Heggen.

  10. All this news-news-news is insane and redundant. All they do is switch talking heads and show the same stories over and over. If I watch KRON at 8 (for example) I don't put it on again all night because it's SSSD (Same Shit Same Day), but I might put on KTVU on at 10 so it's someting a little different (or vice-versa). They also should dump the propaganda and report local news, not whether Trump had a tonsillectomy, Biden crapped his depends, or whatever. Unless it's really something gigantic, leave the national/international news to network CBS, ABC, NBC and cable news MSNBC, Fox and CNN. Less redundancy please.

    1. Not only SSDD but all week the same story with (yes) a different talking head.

  11. KTVU Mornings on 2 is the absolute worst. It's like watching two old farts broadcasting from a nursing home. I swear a funeral parlor has more energy than those two.
As though it's possible, I think the weekend edition of Mornings on 2 is even worse. As awful as they are, at least you can tell that Dave Cluck and Pam Crook have chemistry. Look up disengenuous, fake, and lack of chemistry and you'll see photos of the three weekend clowns (which is doubly pathetic because they've worked together long enough that you think they'd have developed some type of rapport by now).

      This is accurate.

    2. Despite having worked together every weekend for years, Frank Mallicrap, Claudine Wrong, and Posemary Bozosco have nothing even remotely close to resembling on-air chemistry.

    3. OK, KRON 4, don't forget you're toast when the CW takes over

    4. Not gonna lie ... Posemary BOZOsco is hilarious!

    Happy Sunday Rich,
With KRON 'lessening it's news presence' what will happen to Princess Darya Folsom? Pink slip I'm hoping :)

  14. You can pretty much compare any of the local reporters from the '80s and '90s with the current crop of reporters. There's actually no comparison.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Are you kidding? Darya goes to prime time. All that gym work will pay off.

  16. Let's just cut to the chase shall we? The Sword of Damocles is hanging over the head of the beast media. It knows its time is growing short. The chaos and disorientation of corporate heads flailing about, is like watching someone slowly being consumed by quicksand.

  17. So what is the story about Liz Kruetz leaving KGO-7? Where is she going, & when, & why?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of LK, think she's lightweight personified.

I don't know a lot about her future but since ABC is aloof and Disney trying to sell its TV stations (including KGO) many anchors/reporters are probably updating their resumes.
      Kruetz included.

  18. Stupid sports today. Thrilling US Open ignored by KGO (a Warriors PR job about how charitable they are the past decade) and KPIX ((clownshow Vern talking about his ringmaster gig last week that they already talked about earlier in week. Don’t have a sports segment if you’re not fully committed to sports).

    1. Sara Donchey loved that segment. Anyone else?!?

  19. Why was Keith Menconi fired? Or did he choose to leave?

  20. On a separate note, KPIX has stopped all of the previous Enforcer and CBS local music on weekends, finally as of this weekend. The weekend evening 5PM newscast no longer has remnants of the Enforcer and same with Saturday mornings (though it has been on & off). The ending music on the weekend 5PM newscast is the same as it has been on the weekday noon & 3PM newscasts and no CBS local enforcer music after the sports segment.

The version with Juliette Goodrich's theme is around during parts of the 6PM & 11PM weekend newscast. About time, that CBS Local Enforcer music was really just sounding depressing. All that's left is to do a SERIOUS revamp of what a weekday 11PM news is and not a "me me" Sara Donchey late news kind of thing. Even better, just keep Noon & 3PM as the Afternoon Edition, and leave the 5PM, 5:30PM and 11PM as Evening Edition on weeknights. The Late News with Sara Donchey promo is a little too much. Management needs to do some serious thinking about this.

    1. KPIX should give Jocelyn Moran an anchor spot. She’s young and proven to be a very good reporter. Put Starrantino on the 5:00 news.

  21. Keith Menconi was a shining light at KCBS. 4 or 5 solid news reports daily from the South Bay. Sharp prepared questions with experts on his Sunday In Depth program and did no nonsense anchoring on some weekends and holidays.

Quality work all around - he'll show up somewhere else with either a lot more money or a lot lighter workload that he had to drag around at KCBS.

Also , Rich needs to give more credit to the independent online journalist who are on the ground giving us news that the big guys barely touch on. I mean people like Emilie Raguso at Berkeley Scanner who broke the Somerville arrest stories and Darwin Bond Graham of Oaklandside who covers local EBay politics better than the total snark from Phil Matier. Rich owes Raguso more than just a "h/t"

  22. Speaking of Mon2, this morning Andre Senior and Dave Clark are anchoring. I understand it’s not Christmas or Thanksgiving, but today is a federal holiday that marks the day the final enslaved black learned they were free.
You think there colleagues would’ve stepped up to have given them the day off. Classless.

  24. Why is everyone thinking KRON will be DOA once they become a CW affil? KTLA in Los Angeles airs 15.5hrs of local news each weekday and does just fine...does well actually. KRON loses the primetime block, will most likely add more news in the early afternoon and 11pm and it's a carbon copy of KTLA. As long as they make a smart decision on the replacement of Pam Moore (Liviakis or Waldman) they will be fine.

    1. You're comparing KRON4 to KTLA ? Seriously ? Sure, they both use electricity and broadcast off a transmitter using electromagnetic radiation. Thank goodness for the different supers package so I can tell them apart. Gasp
