KRON Does Away with 4 AM News

KRON is axing its 4AM news --it'll still operate just be delayed to 5 --and it's an ominous development.

The decision is about money.

By beginning at 5, KRON's parent, Nexstar, doesn't have to pay extra for another crew. The 5 AM staff is already on board and that's all they care about.

Curious too, because Nexstar just came off a garngantuan quarter --$1.1B in revenue and its head honcho, Perry Sook, making $33M bucks!

  1. The 4 AM news was a nice match to the channel number.

  2. What? Are there 6 people watching at 4am? Not worth the electricity. Truly a newscast in search of an audience.

  3. Who cares what Sook makes, as long as the BofD determines that to be "market value". Newsroom the same (market value), even if it's the minimum under the SAG contract. It's all good. No social engineering on my watch!

  4. My best bet is that it will be replaced with infomercials.

    1. I think Nexstar suits are assessing and evaluating which markets really need a newscast during a very early morning hour such as 4 am. They will continue the 4 am newscast at their LA station KTLA, but you know darn well that traffic reports will comprise most of the hour. Also, the KTLA Morning News has been an institution in Los Angeles for over 30 years with high ratings and bringing in $$$$$$!

    2. I'm sure some of the super commuters in the Valley appreciate some 4am news. I use to work the late shift and didn't get home till 3am, so the 4am news was a way to wind down before bed. I was always amazed by the high energy of some of the early morning anchors like Darya. I don't work those late shifts anymore, but I still have fond memories of some of the early morning babes like Malou Nubla.

  7. KPIX did away with its 4:30AM news back in July of 2022 (It took place effective 7/4/2022) after the departure of Len Kiese and the debut of the Morning Team who don't sit in 1 place anymore and Justin Andrews being the replacement (he's not bad IMO).

Not a surprise. In many channels and lots of different CBS owned stations the more weekday newscasts there are, there are different anchors at different times & different meteorologists at different hours. Maybe a sign KPIX is adding more news as they do every Fall and they're figuring out everyone's schedule.

Is this a precursor that KPIX could eventually add the 4PM/4:30PM news and let Paul Heggen come in much later? And also slowly add more meteorologists like the way KTVU/KRON/KNTV have done?

    2. Darya needs her beauty sleep so shifts before 6 am won't work for her. But whoa. is she ever the party girl. A few hours at KRON gets her wound up with party energy to carry her through the rest of the day. Bottoms up, smoking hot babe, party on !!!

KPIX, KNTV, and KGO all did away with their 4:30am broadcasts. KNTV axed its just a couple weeks ago. KTVU is the last holdout with an early early newscast.

    1. Some of us early risers /supercommuters appreciate the pre 5 am news. Now it’s only KTVU

    2. That traffic and bring a jacket advice make your morning?

    3. I think it was great when they showed the flag waving film and played the national anthem right before sign-off. When they cut the power to the transmitter I knew it was time to go to sleep.

  10. KRON could save a lot of money by reverting to a test pattern from 1-5 am. It'll be an improvement from what's on there now.

    2. In today's woke atmosphere, fat chance. Or can you say that without offending others?

  11. Let's keep our fingers cross that KRON does the same with the rest of its newcasts. They serve no purpose. Total waste of time and energy. It would be better served by airing beauty shots of the bay area on a loop. I would bet this would garner a larger audience. Put up truly magnificent time lapse or beautiful sweeping aerial shots.

  12. Nexstar seems to be doing pretty much what all the other media companies are doing -- making strategic decisions in the face of rising competition which are all aimed at capturing your eyes and attention. More so now than ever before. Nexstar has made a number of acquisitions lately, most notably this week by purchasing KUSI television in San Diego, and will own two stations there and merge newsroom resources. In California they own KTLA in Los Angeles, Fox 40 in Sacramento and others. Additionally they own a majority of the CW network and appear to be bolstering up programming and infusing more cash and resources into their portfolio of almost 200 television stations across the country. I think KRON is in good hands, more so now than in the past several years.

  13. I have to say that I disagree with those who wonder "who" watches KRON at 4am? I mean, if anyone watches the news in the morning, they will see that traffic starts coming into the area at around 4am, out I-580, from Modesto, Manteca, etc. But also, even though I did not like the Harvey girl with the saggy breasts, who doesn't know how to buy clothes that fit properly, still, I liked being able to see the news at 4am and the weather. So although I do not watch it every day, still, it was nice to know it was there. I will miss not having the option.
