Pairing Symmetry on KPIX: Brian Hackney and Juliette Goodrich

I'VE warmed up to, (sort of) Brian Hackney. In spite of himself.

Hackney isn't trying, (for a change) to be the smartest man in the world. He's figured out that as you mellow and get older, you can be more warm and fuzzy, engaging.

Hackney is solid. I've never questioned his news cachet. He's good. But he could be a lot better.

He could be paired on the weeknight, say the 5, with Juliette Goodrich. Now that would be dynamic but don't hold your breath.

And besides, Lisa White wouldn't allow it.

KPIX needs a JOLT! They all do.

  1. Hackney and Goodrich were reunited last week for the first time with the Hack sitting in for Darrin Peck on the weather. Juliette even sang a little of the Peaches & Herb classic to him. It's clear they get along well together. They had a good chemistry on the weekends. But I don't think a half hour newscasts during the week requires two anchors. Juliette is holding it down quite nicely by herself. That's one of the moves CBS brass decided on the turned out well.

The fart noise two Saturdays ago with Ana Nakano and Peck was a classic Hackney not taking himself too seriously. Couldn't tell if it was his laptop or him. Depends, I guess (rim shot..lol). Hope that ends up on a blooper reel someday.

    1. They have real chemistry and I like if they anchor together. Having her anchor and him doing the weather is awkward. He was only there because Peck filled in that same morning.

But I’m looking forward to more developments, it would be cool to see if they are on at 5 or even 11 on weeknights. They are solid anchors in my opinion.

For the weather, he’s good but he wastes too much time on trivia. This is a problem especially if Peck needs to fill in on a Monday morning he will not be there at 11PM Sunday night as was this past Sunday.

I prefer Peck & Heggen, Lee & Burch for weather, Hackney & Goodrich for pure anchoring.

    2. That fart noise episode WAS classic! Brian's and Andrea's reactions were hilarious!

    3. @10:11AM & 2:36PM - On which Saturday newscast? We can watch it on archive.org

    4. 8:23,

It was actually during the Sunday 4/16 6PM newscast. It was just after a Max Darrow water infrastructure story, as they were segueing to Darren Peck's weather segment. A little after the 15 minute point in the program.

    5. 1:40PM - Thanks! Yes, I remember it as I was still at home at that hour (left the house only at 6:50PM for errands). The transition happened around the 6:15PM timeframe when transitioning to weather.

Just rewatched it and Andrea was literally just laughing. It did not sound like a fart. To me it sounded more like a microphone was on his computer & more like a speaker/microphone issue when the volume is in full blast. It likely came from his laptop.

Peck was like "no one heard it" & "there will be no more interruptions for the rest of this forecast". He clearly has no sense of humor and acts like he's the boss of the whole thing. Big ego as I felt. Paul Heggen & other meteorologists can handle this transition better in a much nicer and gentler way.

But one thing lately that has been good/funny between Peck & Nakano was how Hackney said "Darren you are officially Andrea's best friend again, she looked at your forecast and saw it was good" and when he said something about the weather that made her iffy Hackney was like "she's iffy on the best friend thing" and Andrea was like "we're no longer friends" with Peck knowing Andrea loves warm weather. That was on the 4/2 newscast at 5PM.

    7. I'll tell you they like having fun with Peck on the weekends, but Peck only enjoys it when it becomes a topic on his weather chops and trying to find warm weather in the forecast to make Andrea happy. He's filling in this whole week for Burch, so I can't say for certain if he's going to be on this weekend evening (I'm banking that he will at least 1 of the days). He's been working too hard lately and needs a break. Don't worry about weekend mornings now; it's done without live views by whomever is working the previous day.

    8. Peck has covered a lot of shifts, since he has been at PIX. The guy must be able to get by on little sleep.

    9. Simply put despite his ego, he is just that passionate about the weather & giving it to us. Despite him working double shifts before, he clearly enjoys his job. The same goes with anyone, if you have the passion and want to work in something you love, then the rest like $$ will follow. We appreciate all of his hard work & hope KPIX keeps him on for a long time.

He’s the guy who will work on holidays when someone’s out.

    2. I don't think he would. If he was the Chief Meteorologist or permanent weekend meteorologist (like the past), he would not know how to declare a First Alert Weather Day if in case of dangerous weather (i.e. heat, rain/storms, wind) like Peck or Heggen would. Also, a few times on the air he did admit something along the lines of "I always hate doing the weather, so here's Darren Peck". He had this problem late last May, filling in for Heggen when we had a dangerous heat...it was 100 in the Tri-Valley (anything around 95 and above will qualify for a First Alert Weather day red alert status), but yet neither him or Peck declared it.

Not to say he's not good at the weather, he's great but there are things he can leave out. He has a mensa type IQ, like in one of the CBS Stream weather forecasts, he used the term "frontolysis" when describing a cold front and I was like "what?". Someone in another blog post mentioned that in today's world, Peck & Heggen/Burch like to dumb down their information to the viewers in such a way they can understand.

If Hackney moves to the weekday primetime, it would mean he would be the secondary backup meteorologist if both the morning meteorologist & Chief meteorologist take off. If it's just Heggen off, Peck would fill in as usual. Then the problem comes on the Sunday night news, it's complicated.

    3. If that does happen, if they want to make the Sunday night 11PM matter less complicated should Hackney come to do weekday anchoring, the worst they can do is snag Heggen from the 5PM newscast to end of 11PM on Sunday (if he's available) & let Peck fill in another evening during the week. They did snag Heggen once on a Sunday morning back in January when we were pounded with storms so that Peck wouldn't work double shifts that day.

From the anchoring point of view, if Hackney does move to primetime anchor with Goodrich or has his own show, say at 11PM, then that would leave Nakano anchoring solo on weekends (or they can have a coanchor like Donchey or Yamamoto). Donchey is just too much lately with her clothing, wouldn't be surprised if that even happened.

The other worst case is let Gianna do the weather like she did last week for Monday morning (the notes left were simple enough for her). She did a great job on it. Remember the days Emily Turner did the weather? Guess Gianna Franco is another example of it as she can be all over the place during the year.

  4. Hackney and Goodrich’s chemistry is as strong as Reggie and Kumasi on KGO. I mean it shows how real they are!

  5. Have you noticed ever since the new change in December they removed the AMS Certified stickers on air for Darren Peck & Paul Heggen? Especially Darren Peck who has has 2 stickers. Wish they would have brought it back.
