Nikki Medoro and Lisa White: Two 'Mean Girls' Inside KCBS and KPIX; The Turbulence at 855 Battery

Nikki Medoro used to blather for KGO Radio; she did PM news and eventually worked with Chip Franklin as a co-host --Chip was fired a few years back and Medoro went solo--before she was fired herself in the last and final KGO purge last year.

At KPIX, there's Lisa White, the blase news director who apparently has a mean streak and isn't so blase after all--in a bad way.

First, we talk about Medoro, who was recently hired as a part-time news anchor at KCBS. That's about par for the course for KCBS; after all, Medoro is a woman and KCBS hires more women than NOW. Good for them.

But Medoro has her own mean streak too. At KGO, a former staffer told me directly that Medoro "was a cancer" in and around the newsroom.

"She made it a point to make your life miserable if you dare challenged her and then some. If you were to love her, then all was well."

Medoro's path to KCBS was massively aided by Bret Burkhart, no surprise, her former co-anchor at KGO, who pleaded with the news boss, Jenny Seelig, to hire Medoro so the two can spend quality time in the break room to talk world peace and global warming.

Wow.

*The news inside the same building at KPIX isn't so fab either: Lisa White has LOST the newsroom, not that she ever had it to begin with.

She took over, (as ND) for a guy who lost his job amid several allegations of worker misconduct, most of the accusations coming from women.

White, before getting the PIX job, was assistant news director at KPIX and before that, KRON. For 22 years. Maybe there's several reasons why she was passed up countless times for so many years.

One reason: White's tendency to confront workers in the newsroom and make things go completely turbulent in a short span of time.

You do, after all, have to work with staff.

OH and THIS, KPIX's ratings are down in the dumper --after new branding and a make-up by CBS .

Mean Girls don't make for harmony and tranquility at 855 Battery.

A movie maybe?

  1. Medoro in my opinion has a great radio voice and personality to bad her views make a liberal look like they’re far right.

  2. Not much hope for the so called Bay Area News Leader KCBS.

  4. Rich, where can I find the ratings? Are the ratings hour by hour or just week to week? It would appear some shows have good ratings and others not so much.
How much do they fluctuate? For a long time KTVU ruled late news. For a long time KCBS owned AM radio news. And for a long ling while KQED was the #1 in radio for the entire bay area. Have things flipped - and if so what was the key to success?
I see other news via the web and am surprised by how many excellent anchors are out there. With all the diversity, intelligence, educational opportunities and cultural connections in the Bay area, you would think we would draw in the BEST of the BEST. What say you Rich?

  5. Sounds like KPIX’s news boss has the same nakady as the bumbling incompetent KCBS, news director Jen Seelig. In just a few years Seelig has ravaged the newsroom by firing or pushing into retirement qualified veteran reporters and replacing them with inexperienced, mostly women reporters who are really not very good. Her appearance on the scene is indicative of how far the broadcasting profession has fallen. I’ve never seen a News Room go from being such a great place to work to such a disaster in such a short period of time. Good job Jen!

    1. This is quite scary. Allen Martin was likely affected on that end. The only veteran reporters I am aware that are likely in retirement age are Brian Hackney (who double dutied at 11PM last night since Peck is subbing for Burch this week). But the main reporters that come to mind who have been there for decades in KPIX are John Ramos & Len Ramirez. Both do an outstanding job on the field.

  6. Regarding post 4:44PM, does anyone know what "nakady" is or means?

  7. Why am I not surprised to hear that Nikki has an attitude? Still, she’s got a voice made for radio, so you can understand if it has gone to her head. I haven’t heard her yet on KCBS, but hiring her was a smart move.

The above comment allegedly made by a former KGO staffer about Medoro surprises me; I would have guessed it more accurately described Pat Thurston, who used to go off on vicious rants whenever a colleague would disagree with her on-air.
