Exclusive: KTVU and Fox Bosses Have Contingency If Julie Haener Leaves; Alex Savidge-Cristina Rendon Anchor Team In Place; The Firm Is Anxious

KTVU and its senior Fox news division has begun to think outside the box.

According to several station sources, a new anchor team is being formulated and it could debut anytime soon.

The new team is Alex Savidge and Cristina Rendon.

Both have been at KTVU for nearly a decade and know the system.

The Savidge/Rendon pairing could be in answer to the murky status of Julie Haener who has intimated to friends that she might leave or simply retire from KTVU where she's been for over twenty years. Haener hasn't talked to KTVU management about such a move but insiders at The Firm say her mindset might be that she's ready to end her tenure at Channel 2.

KTVU knows this and doesn't want to be caught off-guard, thus the Savidge/Rendon tinkering.

And what about fellow anchor and mainstay, Mike Mibach's status? Mibach, who took over for disgraced veteran, Frank Somerville, is still on board and will not lose his anchorship although management might be moving him to an alternate nightime time slot. It's not something imminent with regards to Mibach, I'm told.

Haener's status is much more problemamtic.

Several longtime KTVU sources told me that managers at both KTVU and Fox parent are upset at Haener's penchant "to push the envelope" and take advantage of her position at the station.

"She realizes she has pull nere and that if they (KTVU) lose her, the ratings would really tank," a source told me.

In actuality, ratings at KTVU have already cratered and viewers are not so happy with morning newbie, Mibach. And Haener's frequent absences hasn't helped matters.

Which is why the bosses may be planning a back-up team of Savidge and Rendon just in case.

KTVU, once the dominant Bay Area TV news source, is now scrambling just to remain relevant.

    3. She's getting a little older and not at her peak hotness anymore but I'd still like to read her teleprompter.

    4. Heather is the best looking news anchor in the Bay Area. That is my opinion and if Julie decides to leave KTVU would be crazy not to put her in the 10 PM slot. Men know why I say that, because Heather has IT whatever IT is.

    5. Heather gives me the creeps. I don't see "it".

  2. Why Haener is still on the payroll is beyond me. She immediately shaped up after your explosive exposè about her dramatics and erratic schedule but it looks like she's already reverted back to old habits, missing several days over the past two weeks. This is the perfect time to move away from the stale model of old geezer botox barbies sitting there like statues reading the news.

Send Haener packing and move Alex and Christina into the prime time slot immediately. Both are youthful, respected and bring good energy to the newscast. Plus it's a pairing that can flourish and turn into a Bay Area mainstay. And while they're at it they should work on making the newscast itself more dynamic and engaging. NBC 11 and KRON are perfect examples of this.

    Excellent reporting as usual Rich.

    1. She’s not an old geezer, she’s an Instagrandma (postmenopausal women who dress and act like teenage girls).

  4. so KTVU is no longer #1?

  5. Why not shake up the anchor team and put in Heather Holmes and LaMonica Peters? Add Roberta Gonzales on weather for even more fun. Then throw in Frank Mallicoat on sports.

  6. 'KTVU and its senior Fox news division has begun to think outside the box." What? Do you want a fuckin cookie? Rich, this is their JOB! This anticipatory shit storm has been brewing for quite some time and like a spoiled child, covered their ears and eyes hoping it would go away on its own. This country needs an enema. Starting with the brain dead liberal MSM. Incompetence and laziness is not to be rewarded or commended. This should have been dealt with at its nexus when Ibanez was shown the door. Read the room!

  8. Alex and Christina...sounds like a solid team.

Off subject. Once in awhile I tune into Shark Tank and this season started off with a live audience. What an absolute S&%t Show.

  9. It's cute that you think anyone at KTVU actually plans anything LOL

  10. Whatever works. Personally, I'll be watching KRON-4.

  11. I actually miss an anchor saying, "...in for Julie Haener, who is off tonight", or Mike Mibach when he's off as they used to when it was Frank S. and Julie H. That announcement went away with the latest staffing iteration without Frank S. It's as if KTVU hasn't committed to anybody anchoring the Sunday-Thursday evening newscasts at 5, 6, and 10 pm.

    1. I’ve noticed the same. They’ve basically committed to playing musical chairs with anchors. In their mind you’re qualified to anchor any newscast so long as you have a pulse and aren’t blind.

  13. I'm sorry but I've seen Mibach on Mornings on 2 for years. He just never came across to me as appointment viewing. Too dry? Not my cup of tea.

  14. Too early for Julie to retire. If Heather Holmes don’t get the spot, is she going to scream???

    1. If Heather doesn't get it she should do what Letterman did and walk across the street and be the new main anchor on CBS. #1 ratings for a few years if that happened.

    2. Heather seems to be a pretty stable team player. She is on all kinds of different times so she supports the station. Don't think she would bolt but if I were another network I would certainly be giving her a call if she doesn't get the main slot.

    3. She should walk across the street to where? The condo parking lot adjacent to ktvu where staffers and talent go to gossip and rendezvous?

  15. I’m Team Christina! I’m not sure if Alex is a good match for her. If he anchored with Christina Rendon it would bring out his shortcomings. He can’t read the teleprompter without making errors and have you heard his attempts at ad-libbing? He can’t ask or say a thought without ums, ehs or ahhs.

  16. How does Haener have “pull”? I think it’s all speculation. If she wants to retire it’s ok. People retire everyday. I wish her good luck.

    1. Exactly. Sure, she may have seniority and get better shifts and PTO preference but she doesn’t necessarily have influence or pull just because she’s been there a trillion years.

    2. I certainly can't believe she's goosing the ratings. Does anybody, except maybe some dirty old men in retirement homes along the Peninsula, care she's anchoring the news?

  18. Christina would do well. She doesn't roll her r's, doesn't talk with a fake accent, and doesn't look too much like a chola.

  19. When will ktvu tell Julie Haener to stop posting pics of her in creepy and borderline inappropriate poses with her sons? There are pics of her in their laps, with her legs extended across the laps and with each others hands in strange places.

  21. While I think Savige and Rendon would be a good match, my sense is The Firm won’t ever make it officially for financial reasons. If they’re officially the prime time anchors then they’re in a position to demand more money. It’s easier to continue making assignments based on whichever anchors or reporters are available for any particular shift.

    1. Yeah they’ve been dicking around Alex and Cristina but not because of pay. Both have young children and both live in the east bay and at this point the firm knows neither has any desire to change up their routine and start fresh somewhere else, even if it’s in the Bay Area. Any other station would be in SF or San Jose and neither wants to extend their commute by 2 hours per a day. They’ve got it good driving into Oakland at off-peak times.

  23. "'She realizes she has pull nere and that if they (KTVU) lose her, the ratings would really tank,' a source told me."

    Why?

Ever see that movie Lars and the Real Girl? She's the plastic doll. Or the movie I Robot? She's...well, you get it.

    She ain't Christiane Amanpour.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Exactly. Haener is a teleprompter reader who works a part time schedule. She’s not a journalist. They are two completely different jobs requiring completely different skill sets. She has no journalism chops whatsoever.
When Julie retires or gets fired, her departure will have no impact on the news operation beyond short-term staffing issues. Ironically, ratings would like increase so long as The Firm replaces her with someone easier on the eyes and more watchable.

  24. I have been watching Andrea Nakano on KPIX. She’s really good and it’s obvious that Sara Donchey isn’t in the mix. The suits should make Andrea permanent.

I don’t give rat’s ass about Haener, Mibach or KTVU.
