Haener presents the news and she has mostly superficial elements that are more about her as opposed to what she's reading on the teleprompter. It's not exactly pithy.
Julie really didn't like Leslie because she knew Leslie was a larger-than-life figure, both at KTVU and beyond. While Ms. Griffith was compelling and profound, Julie is an abundance of fluff.
All that said, her omission of Ms. Griffith's death is a rather sad affair, personally and most definitely professionally.
*At KGO-TV (ABC7) chances are, they're having a rougher time than what's going on at KTVU and PIX only the Circle7 crew is more talented at keeping things internal.
*Reed Cowan has more baggage than the United terminal at SFO. It's a wonder that CBS/SF HR didn't bother, I guess, to read his Wiki page and/or do a basic background check.
*Jon Miller is a legit HOF broadcaster; there's no denying that whatsoever. But Miller's overbearing "107 MPH off the bat!" infatuation is beyond pathetic as is his want to call every pitch a "cutter." I'm also tired of Miller's rant on umpires seemingly every pitch that "very well could have been called a strike." Holy cow, Jon, try new material.*Or, maybe Miller was on assignment.
*Just way, way, way, overrated: Dave Flemming.
*Not only do the newbie TV News reporters not know the local geography, they can't do any ad-libbing if their life depended on it, which is why the "live" reports you all watch are not live at all, really taped shots that are made to look live. The inability to do a real live shot and read out loud and not from notes, used to be no real big deal, now it's considered an art form.
*Speaking of fluff, Raj Mathai, who is chock full of fluff and pretends to look like a real news guy but is more a pretty boy who likes to make it appear he has chops. He doesn't.
*The sports anchor at KRON who is very good at taking selfies of himself and partying like a fan boy needs to lower the volume; granted, it's KRON but KRON has been trying to be un-KRON-like of late.
*Pat Thurston's KGO Radio hits with defense attorney, David Katz, is damn good radio.Katz used to be a federal prosecutor and it helps when he talks about the inner, legal manuverings that encompass the current Trump/DOJ Mar-a-Lago classified docs story. Katz doesn't like Trump and he says so and he especially thinks Trump will be indicted but he can also be fair and impartial and he has been here. It's a good listen.
*I know about Christopher's in LA on Santa Monica and the great delis like Nate& Al and such, I was talking about the lack of good delis HERE. But thanks for the extensive suggestions and advice, I'll try my best for a mundane tuna-fish on rye today with an egg cream and seltzer.
Holy cow get some new material. Wow look who’s talking, Gary?
ReplyDeleteFor the love of god when are you people going to get it. Leslie was a complete fraud. She’d come to work and take a nap in the green room until the ten pm news. She was great as long as everyone did the work for her. Once she got the five she completely freaked out cause she actually had to work. And that’s why she got fired. She was a disgusting human being who conned a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Please elaborate further.
DeleteYou have no idea what you're talking about. You clearly have a vendetta against Leslie as you keep calling her disgusting. Why don't you stop hiding behind this computer and using anonymity to spread false, nasty lies.
DeleteJon Miller and Dave Flemming, both vastly overrated...
ReplyDeleteI like Flem. I think he is the most objective of the Giant broadcasters. Sooooo tired of the homerism of Kruk & Kuip.
DeleteThe one who should get new material is Krukow. Gamer babes, grab some pine meat, and in the squaaat are old
and tired.
I like Miller and Dave but Krukow is way past his prime. All those sayings were cute 20 years ago, but today sound old and tired. He is a super nice guy and I know people love him but the Giants hang on to people way too long, see Belt, Longoria, Crawford. The glory days are over guys.
Delete1:36, I couldn't agree more. I am so tired of the Kruk schtick. It was old 10 years ago.
DeleteThere are worse broadcasters. Think "Joe Angel."
DeleteFlemming looks uncomfortable on TV despite all these years. He doesn’t seem to know Giants history pre-1993 and is utterly incapable of spinning a yarn or ad lib. Nice voice but empty content.
ReplyDeleteCame here to voice the same sentiment; Miller's instant knowledge of the history, legend, and lore of the game is real and genuine, and while the way Miller delivers it can be laborious, you know he's not faking it. Flem does not have that trove to draw on, very vanilla and the fake laughs are grating. Analog vs digital, in some ways...information vs knowledge
Delete"Katz doesn't like Trump and he says so and he especially thinks Trump will be indicted but he can also be fair and impartial"
ReplyDeleteYeah right. I have a big golden bridge from SF to Marin I'd like to sell you.
Exactly. David Katz is to "impartial" what I am to "avid listener" of the Nikki Medoro show.
DeleteKgo has been very careful to make sure they have highlighted both of Nikkis kids debuts on the air with her,as well as kim McAllisters kid..next week the kids are taking over the steve Moskovitz "interviews" as well
DeleteFair. Impartial. You have got to be crazy. He has been trying to bury Trump for 5 years relying on fake stories and manufactured evidence. This will fail like all of the rest.
DeleteDo the Giants announcers even go on the road this year to do games? Or do they broadcast them from the booth at Oracle? Anyone know....because they act as if they are on the road...hard to tell
ReplyDeleteFor most road games, Kruk and Kuip are actually at home. Because of their respective health issues, they rarely travel with the team anymore.
DeleteAs far as Job and Flem, I’m not sure but I’ve noticed a number of road games where they did their NBC Sports postgame shows from Oracle.
We all have our less desirable sides, but I highly doubt that LG was so horrible as a person that she didn't deserve to have a few words said about her career from her highest ranking colleagues (Dennis, Frank, Mark, Elaine, Bill, etc.). I noticed the majority of things were said by the Shandobil/Castaneda level folks.
ReplyDeleteSounds like these people didn't wanna upset the apple cart or jeopardize their pensions, or maybe didn't feel like getting approval from their corporate overlords.
I loved Leslie for most of her tenure at KTVU, but it was uncomfortable watching her during her last few years there. Maybe her former colleagues felt it was too dishonest to say things like, "She was a respected and admired professional", "She was a journalist's journalist" or some such.
DeleteJulie doesn't like Leslie for the way she treated her best friend, Mark Ibanez. Again, for those of you don't know, Mark and Leslie we're an item years ago. They had a falling out and were arguing in the parking lot one night after the 10: 00pm news. She followed Mark to his car took off one of her stiletto high heels & beat the ever living F*** out of him. OPD was called but with KTVU's help didn't take a report and swept it under the rug. That's most likely the reason why she didn't acknowledge Leslie's passing.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that definitely played a part in it. Just super unprofessional to at least acknowledge someone who probably helped you along the way and was a pillar there. I've heard that story before, and it sounds like Playboy Mark brought that on himself honestly (Ibanez fan here too).
DeleteYes, but not Krukow or Kuiper for the most part. That’s why you see folks like Estes and Lopez.
ReplyDeleteYou've really got it in for Julie lately, what gives?
ReplyDeleteMaybe because it's long overdue?
DeleteLike her or not, she’s a major name in Bay Area media and the developments with her ongoing professional and personal issues are worthy of coverage here. When shit finally hits the fan with Julie and her job, it’s gonna be Rich’s blog that the lamestream media will plagiarize from.
Delete3:39 PM - Bingo.
DeleteThat picture of Miller lol...ffs put on some big boy pants.
ReplyDeleteHaener told management she wouldn’t be in today, but then yesterday she cancelled her day off and said she’d come in tonight after all. Feels like she’s starting to feel the pressure and resentment.
ReplyDeleteIf she can't handle a two-day workweek she needs to retire, now, and let someone who actually gives a damn in.
DeleteI suspect she cancelled her sick day because of pressure and issues this blog has raised through your excellent reporting Rich.
DeleteDavid Katz is an idiot. He's about as "appointment radio" as Jan Wahl is with Rothmannnnn.
ReplyDeleteFor some, and I am one, David Katz is appointment radio, he explains things in a way that I can understand. Having said that not everyone will agree with him. I do think he is for the most part impartial. I can listen to someone that is more right wing and not agreeing with them, but still find them interesting and it can help me see something from a different point of view.
DeletePlease let ktvu show writers and Frank Mallicoat know that Baseball teams don’t win in ‘overtime’ - they win in ‘extra innings.’
ReplyDeleteDave Flemming only knows it's a homerun when the ball leaves the park. He is like a little girl and had no baseball credibility. He is the guy who brings his glove to the game and broadcasting booth.
ReplyDeleteYou’re right about Circle7 doing a better job of not airing their dirty laundry. KTVU has no control of their operation and many, if not most, people there are completely demoralized and have no problem leaking internal goings on.
ReplyDeleteOne example: a specific anchor who Julie considers an extremely close confidant who purposely leaks information to a ktvu staffer and gives their blessing for that staffer to share the information with whomever they wish, whether internal or external.
The reason: The anchor learned Julie shared some highly confidential information about them that Julie swore to keep secret.
I’ve noticed Carlos Ramirez and Rich Aurilia don’t work postgame shows together ever since Carlos tried to upstage Rich when he showboated and pranced around the studio like the immature, idiotic child that he is.
ReplyDeleteIf there’s a correlation, then Aurilia can work every show for the rest of the season. One can dream. They can’t bring Ramirez back next season, can they?
DeleteDavid Katz is impartial? Are you fucking kidding Rich? Or did they open a new dispensary in Oakland?
ReplyDeleteDoes Reed on KPIX have some connection to get this job? With his background and misuse of power previously, he will never get a job in this field.
ReplyDeleteConnected and checks boxes on the PC bingo card
DeleteI do think David Katz is fairly impartial. Your comment suggest that you are very close minded and don't tolerate an opposing point of view.
DeleteLon Simmons invited Bill King over to his house, knowing King was a nautical guy - he took him out to the garage and got in his sailboat. King was bewildered, “what are doing Lon?” Simmons, “Garage sail Bill!” They proceeded to drink and laugh the afternoon away.
ReplyDeleteThat’s what happens when folks respect one another and are not threatened by them.
Enjoy the brief time you’ve got left
I wasted my time reading this?
DeleteJon Miller want to call every pitch a cutter? Reminded of the story Ronald Reagan told about his days as a sports announcer for WHO Radio in Des Moines, Iowa during the 1930s. He would call Chicago Cubs games, but rather than being at the game, he would recreate the action from nothing but a slip of paper typed by a telegraph operator who was transcribing plays sent by Morse code. On June 7, 1934, with the Cubs and the Cardinals tied 0-0 in the ninth inning, with Billy Jurges at-bat and Dizzy Dean out on the mound, the line went dead. Rather than lose his audience, Reagan improvised a streak of foul balls that lasted nearly twelve minutes until the wire came back.
ReplyDeleteIn later years, Ronny bullshitted his way through Hollywood, Sacramento, and Washington.
DeleteIf you check Julie's IG you'll see she was out of town for a wedding. People who work FT accumulate vacation time and she actually seems to use it yet everyone here thinks she's supposed to be on the air 52 weeks a year. She doesn't owe any of you a damn thing.
ReplyDeleteSure buddy. Keep telling yourself that :)
DeleteRich, not to pile on the anti-Leslie bandwagon, but she was hardly Edward R. Murrow as you suddenly seem to be making her out to be. She was more like Dan Rather, with whom she was friends (both from Texas): talented and committed but flaky and volatile and more than a little psycho.
ReplyDeleteJust as strange things seemed to happen to Dan ("What's the frequency, Kenneth?" "Help, I'm being kidnapped by a taxicab!") strange things happened to Leslie during her tenure, some of it her fault, some of it not. She always seemed suspicious of colleagues, however, and seemed to have a chip on her shoulder. She also seemed to attract unstable or undesirable people--She had an affair with IbaƱez, for crying out loud! Just thinking about that makes me want to take a shower. She was a serial cheater and put her husband through a lot. He seemed like the silent, suffering type.
Her reporting was...okay. She did stuff to get attention, but her writing and investigating rarely went beneath the surface. She read the prompter like she was talking to a room of kindergarten children.
No, she wasn't Murrow. She was more like a slightly more filled out version of Julie Haener. She did care about reporting, however, even if she couldn't see her limitations in the field and often had delusions of grandeur. Julie only cares about having an easy job that pays the big bucks so she can live her affluent screw-you I'll-use-as-much-water-on-my-huge-lawn-as-I-want suburban lifestyle.
Enough about Leslie Griffith… she will be remembered as a crazy bitch who cheated on her husband with Mark Ibanez and she treated her co-workers poorly. Actually, this sounds like Julie Haener too!
ReplyDeleteLol! Ktvu prime time anchors all turn loony and leave in disgrace, Jules is next.
DeleteBoth Leslie & Dennis treated their co-workers poorly with a "we're better than everyone attitude". Then Dennis was an a-hole who forced Elaine Coral to quit. In steps psycho Leslie to take over the anchor desk. Very sad how the mighty KTVU had fallen. Julie needs to retire & go watch Fresno State football. Word is Head Coach Jeff Tedford may not start Julie's son at QB and go younger. Also he supposedly on NFL scouts radar but is he really that good to play at the next level. Could you imagine Julie at the NFL Draft next season? Ugh!
DeleteWhy does Pat Thurston start her show with a tape of a guy yelling “No justice no peace!”? I thought Pat claims to be against political violence? Maybe I’m mis-hearing, and the guy is really saying “No peas!”?? Like a cooking show?
ReplyDeleteI dunno. She seems pro suburbia when it comes to outrage of the day on SF. I miss Chip Franklin more than ever.
Delete"She was a serial cheater and put her husband through a lot. He seemed like the silent, suffering type."
ReplyDeleteInteresting.
I'm confused. What exactly is Julie Haener supposed to do to "acknowledge " the death of a former anchor from years ago?
ReplyDeleteJulie H. was so upset over Leslie G's passing, JH took a few days off to grieve....(I don't know any of these people and have no opinion. I barely remember seeing Leslie Griffith on the air).
DeleteReally, if I was even watching the news back in those days, I was likely flipping channels between KTVU2, KRON4, KPIX5, KGO7, and maybe even KNTV11. Actually, I probably didn't watch KTVU2 much if they were airing the news at 10pm (were they on at 10pm back then, too?) as it was still prime-time TV hours.
I worry about Jon Miller. Terrific voice, knows the game as well as anybody and has a wonderful sense of humor and the ability to tell a good story. But I’ve been noticing that he sometimes is not only late with his calls, but occasionally has long pauses during the call of a play when he’s on the radio.. Also, the other day he was stuttering a bit. And It sometimes sounds as if he’s announcing on television when he’s working in the radio. Just bare bones play by play., I don’t want to see Jon die at the mic the way Henry Kalas or Dick Enberg did. Jon is 70 years old and probably has another 4-5 years left behind the mic but he should seriously think about retiring when he hits his mid 70s. I know it would be very tough for him to hang em up because he loves baseball so much and has been broadcasting it for nearly 50 years. Bill King probably stayed on too long with the A’s and died only a week after the season was finished in 2005. Lon Simmons knew better and retired after 2002 when he was working part time with the Giants. He lived for another 13 years.
ReplyDeleteBrutal comments tonight… brilliant at the same time. Perhaps Leslie snuck out at the peak of TV News. Also, Rich, what’s the deal with the new helicopter sharing program? This was already a thing in the pandemic… what’s changed?
ReplyDeleteObviously Giants fans think Fleming is overrated. So too does the Giants brass and his employers at ESPN/ABC.
ReplyDeleteLeslie had that perpetual "deer-in-the-headlights" look. I've never seen anyone then...or since...whose eyes were always so wide open. And I know quite a few KTVU old-schoolers who can also confirm that she most definitely was not a "journalist." KTVU had an excellent stable of producers and writers to thank for this.
ReplyDeleteEyes wide open? There is a spokesperson for I think, Jacoby & Meyers Injury Law that comes on daytime TV who scares the ish out of me never blinking and eyes wide open throughout the entire commercial LOL
DeleteYou’re wrong. Julie did acknowledge Leslie’s passing by taking even more time off work and partying it up with a bunch of rich women who look like they’re from a Botox Gone Bad meme. If you don’t believe me look at her social media.
ReplyDelete
