While her colleagues respect her work and acknowledge her influence at the station, the vast majority of staff at KTVU--including on-air anchors and reporters, are royally FED UP with the continued excess sick leave/days being allotted to Julie Haener.
It is so bad and toxic, the situation is, it's caused in-house clashes with personnel --including, notably, Heather Holmes and Claudine Wong, who have had to alter and reschedule their own shifts to fill in for Haener's frequent and extended absences at the station.Furthermore, in the case of Holmes, who has a teenage daughter and who takes summer trips with her?-- she's had to work around Haener's MIAs to accommodate her own time off.
The situation has resulted in a now-fractured relationship with both, a duo (Haener-Holmes) so privately bonded and close they were considered the dual aces at the station. Now, Holmes, who's one of the rank and file anchors at KTVU, is no longer talking to Haener and only speaks to her when she has to and that's when they're both on the air.
Wong and a few veteran reporters have also largely began to separate any communication with Haener, who has now missed several days and weeks due to unexplained sick and vacation days. Haener, according to a KTVU source, is not physically ill. And her health status, says a high-up contact, has been verified by station and Fox brass.
Her mental state may be rife with depression, but peeps at KTVU tell me it's not an extreme matter and she's (Haener) able to work. Moreover, Haener knows she has considerable leverage at KTVU. "She knows she's a star and that they (management) can't afford to lose her therefore she has free reign," a prominent source told me via email.
The feeling at KTVU is that Haener has milked her own status at 2 and that she is taking advantage at the expense of others. And now all this has transpired into a virtual warfare inside KTVU's newsroom. Staff personnel, which is especially sparse in August --a time when vacation by staffers is prevalent--has made things worse.
Not helping matters is KTVU's worsening ratings--especially at 10 PM--which has seen Channel 2's once-mighty nighttime numbers eroding en masse, caused considerable friction and turbulence with Amber Eikel and the news division. It is Eikel, the ND who already has a tortured relationship with staff, that continues to be met with derision and ridicule --now especially evident because Eikel allows Haener's behavior.Haener was at the news desk on Sunday (she works a Sunday-Thursday schedule), but yes, called in sick last (Monday) night.
The souce talked of a double standard.
"The double standard is that many of the talent have children and families but aren’t always able to get their desired shifts. Julie, on the other hand would miss 3-4 days of work each time her son had a college football game, which are on Saturdays - the day she doesn’t work. It started off with her taking Sundays off so she could travel back home. Then it turned into her taking Thursdays and Sundays off. Then it turned into taking Weds, Thurs, and Sunday. People were and are resentful that everything revolves around her. The thought is Amber knows Julie holds all the cards and that we can’t afford to lose."
Haener returned to the airwaves on Tuesday night.

I see Haener has been taking notes from VDLC.
ReplyDeleteShe (Haener) should’ve been smart and not post on social media as VLDC would do and just go off the grid and then show up to work and start posting.
Yes. Veronica DeLa Cruz went m.i.a. for a long time over at PIX. Rumor had it she had some very tragic things going on in her personal life at the time. She eventually ended up leaving and was last spotted working for Newsy. Life can be a tumble, indeed.
DeleteThat’s why I cut Julie some slack. You never really know what’s going on in one’s personal life. And let’s face it the news can be in a word…DEPRESSING. Hey, even Ming took a month off and just returned this week. She NEVER takes off. She probably cashed in on all of those flex hours she banked with miss Lim breathing down her neck. lol
So as the old KGO Pete Wilson tag line goes, people take off…‘Because there’s more to life than news, weather and sports’. Allows for more time to ‘build a better Bay Area’ (ducks). lol
Why are they so afraid to lose her? She hardly works and has made herself irrelevant. Heather and Cristina are patiently waiting in the wings and they’re practically doing the job anyway with Julie’s repeated absences.
ReplyDeleteShe has a contract and an agent who knows exactly what's going on...
DeleteThe agent gets 10% of her pay check.
Rich KNOWS this.
I thought it was 15 percent but I admit I've never had one.
DeleteDoes anyone know why exactly she’s missing so much work? As far as her colleagues, I can understand their frustration if they need be on standby mode day after day because she keeps calling in sick the day of her shift.
ReplyDeleteHer mental health ran off the rails. Common knowledge at 2, but not said openly. People hide when she shows up.
DeleteKTVU worker
There are no "stars" when the ratings tank.
ReplyDeleteAll the viewers have moved to KRON-4 10pm news. With stars Ken Wayne & Pam Moore just to name a few at KRON 4
Sum ting berry berry wong at Fox-2
Fire her. And be done with it.
Precisely. Ktvu can possibly fire her for abusing the sick leave policy, reliability issues, or for creating a distraction at work with her excessive days off.
DeleteBut because she continues to miss work without consequences I suspect she may’ve already provided a note from a doctor or psychiatrist that she can only work 1-2 days each week.
Put Gasia at 10PM, Mike will be screaming on air and suddenly disappear like Frank. Claudine so hard to watch last night, her voice sounds like she is biting her teeth hard while reporting.
ReplyDeleteI just watch noon news and rival Rosemary KTVU vs Kayla KRON same time. The winner Rosemary trying to attract viewers with a nice dream and heavy make up
The meterologist gig is her second job. Didn't you hear... Rodemary is a fashion designer. LOL Her & Azadeh Riaz are close friends and business associates. The clothing is horribly overpriced. Ladies, do you wear any of Rosemary's clothes?
DeleteI’m pretty sure the only women leaving comments here are overly sensitive news anchors who post anonymous ‘rebuttal’ comments when their feelings get hurt.
DeleteWhen KTVU was trying out different combinations of anchors, I thought Andre with either Heather or Christine were the best.
DeleteShe's selfish and used to having her ass kissed. Obviously never heard the word NO. Cut her loose. None of these people are special. Just come in, do your damn job and go home. Simple.
ReplyDeleteKiss her ass for what? cuz she works 15% of the time and robotically reads words others wrote for her?
DeleteSocial media whore.
Deletektvu employee here, and the sentiment around the building is definitely one of frustration and confusion with Julie’s situation. There’s no predictability to her schedule and I’ve heard the stories of annoyed fill-in anchors. They’re also annoyed that despite the work they do picking up the slack for Julie their careers don’t seem to be going anywhere. When she began to miss more and more work there was thinking that increased exposure would help others. Saying the staff is fed up is accurate, though the double standard is mainly between the ‘talent’ and those of us who aren’t in front of the camera.
ReplyDeleteSince their careers aren't going anywhere despite pulling Julie's weight, were I one of them I would always have something to do when I get scheduled extra shifts. "Sorry, have a dental appointment." "Sorry, having a vasectomy." "Sorry, watching the paint dry in my spare room."
DeleteLol! Sounds funny but you’re right. If she has reasons to be out every day, then why can’t others? I guarantee something would change quickly if Heather, Cristina, Claudine and others began to put their foot down and said no more of this insanity.
DeleteWhy doesn't the station just hire/promote another anchor? The more potential anchors available the more expendable each of them becomes. It's simply a problem that station management has brought upon themselves.
ReplyDeleteExactly. Promote someone permanently into the prime time slot and be done with it already. There’s nothing preventing them from doing so since they play musical chairs with anchors as it is.
DeleteIf I missed this much time i would have been fired along time ago
DeleteI think they could easily afford to lose her. Pure on a dunking bird in the mean time, and look for a good, up-and-coming anchor from a midmarket. Post get some real coin—1/2 Julie’s salary will probably be plenty —and the headache will be gone. She’s not Queen Elizabeth, even though she seems too she is. She’s a mannequin with very white teeth.
ReplyDeleteIn any workplace if you have to constantly pick up the slack and fill-in for someone who always misses work most of us would be a team player and do what needs to be done. But when it happens all the time the resentment and annoyance will intensify especially if you’re getting no reward and the slacker experiences no consequences.
ReplyDeleteIf she was a real professional she'd show up when she's supposed to, If management were real professionals they'd call her on it.
ReplyDeletethe keyword is 'real.' As we know neither Julie nor management have a professional bone in their body. it's pure narcissism. if she were a real professional she'd be ashamed to cash her paychecks.
DeleteWhat a ca ca show! Ibanez doesn’t realize how lucky he was to take a buyout. Total dysfunction.
ReplyDeleteIs she with Ibanez now?
DeleteIf she did Ibanez I'd puke, he's what 5"6"
DeleteOnly Haener and Ibanez know if they've done the dirty deed but if they have then Mark is one lucky bastard. In sporting terms, Mark definitely is playing out of his league if he landed Julie.
DeleteZero chance Mark ever did her, Julie wouldn't bottom fish.
DeleteI don’t blame Heather and Claudine for being royally annoyed. Sounds like Heather even doesn’t get to see her daughter all the time, so yeah, it’s kinda eff’d up her plans have to take into account the likely possibility Julie will call in sick on any given day. No regard for how your actions impact others sounds like something between a narcissist and psychopath.
ReplyDelete“…something between a narcissist and a psychopath.”
DeleteAt first read that sounded unnecessary dramatic but then I looked up the definition of psychopath.
Merriam-Webster defines it as “a mentally unstable person especially : a person having an egocentric and antisocial personality marked by a lack of remorse for one's actions, an absence of empathy for others, and often criminal tendencies”
Take out the criminal tendencies (as far as we know) and that sounds very much like Julie.
No Double Standards! FIRE JULIE HAENER! Sign the petititon... Do the right thing KTVU
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately - no one here knows what is going on behind the scenes. Is she in distress?
ReplyDeleteJulie is fine. Perfectly fine. But no doubt she appreciates your thoughts and prayers.
DeleteIf this keeps up, I'm afraid KTVU will lose Cristina Rendon. That would be a crime. Tell QB Mom to take a hike. The ratings may just pick up. It can't get any worse...or can it???
ReplyDeleteCristina Rendon is talented and certainly one of the most talented people there, yet they bury her on newscasts that no one watches. Frankly, I’m surprised she didn’t leave a long time ago. She has tolerated being at the bottom of the totem pole for way too long.
DeleteCan't blame Julie. She sees KTVU for what it's become, a burning ship with rats are jumping off. The ratings have plunged. Management here and in NY have done everything wrong. The Frank situation could have been handled differently. He could have been rehabilitated. Every boss deals with an employee with an alcohol problem now and then. It's a problem that can be solved most of the time. An experienced boss would have dealt with this before it became an embarrassment for the station. And a long time ago they should have had Frank doing a nightly commentary, as he had wanted. Ashley does that at Channel 7 and it gives him gravitas. Amber doesn't understand that because she lacks experience. She'll be out the door in six months if things continue. If they bring in solid management, this situation with Julie will go away, as will 100 other problems. It all starts at the top.
ReplyDelete
Delete'Can't blame Julie. She sees KTVU for what it's become, a burning ship with rats are jumping off."
Then quit! If she's still collecting a (large) paycheck while making her coworkers work double, she's not jumping off the ship, and she's trapping others too.
If working a few days a week reading other people's words and making sad faces at the end of every tragic story is so hard, quit and try getting a job someplace else. I hear Carl's Jr. is hiring.
Maybe they'll hire Frank back.
DeleteUnless her son is playing in the Super Bowl, there's no reason whatsoever why she'd need to miss several days of work each time her little Johnny has a game. Does she need all those days off before and after because she's walking to and from the games? From her FB it looks like she is quite comfortable flying, so her excuse is just that, an excuse.
ReplyDeleteMe, to my boss: my son has a football game every weekend during the fall, so I’ll need to take 5 days off each week just because.
DeleteMy boss: Enjoy the games. Oh, and be sure to leave your resignation letter on my desk before you leave today. Clearly you don’t have a need for this job anymore, so we don’t have a need for you.
How dare a mother watch her child's football game! The audacity!
DeleteRich recently reported an intense conversation in the newsroom when Julie talked about taking a leave of absence and her social media. Now with these revelations about her colleagues resentment about her schedule, I’m wondering if that newsroom convo occurred after someone confronted her about it, which put her into a tailspin? Whatever the case is, I hope she’s taking all these days off to get mental health services.
ReplyDeleteWell, I for one have had it with her "puffy " humerous sleeves.
ReplyDelete(not humorous....the upper-arm bone is the humerous.)
Y'all are awfully harsh on Julie.
ReplyDeleteJulie must have read this post. She deigned to appear today.
ReplyDeleteShe probably had nothing on her social calendar tonight and figured she might as well make an appearance since they’re still paying her 500k a year
DeleteHeather has always been a good soldier. My favorite news anchor in the Bay Area. She deserves the best.
ReplyDeleteYou people are ridiculous. Julie is the best co-worker I’ve ever had. Ever. She treats everyone with respect, takes time to get to know people, and will always go out of her way to help someone in need. She cares about her community and her extensive volunteer record proves that.
ReplyDeleteI’ve never heard anyone say anything bad about her other than people on this site who’ve never had the pleasure of meeting her.
Dude Julie doesn’t do volunteer work and you know it. She comes in at 435. For the 5 pm news. And then comes in at 935 for the ten on news. She’s never volunteered. Julie cares about Julie. Period. Why would you lie like that?
DeleteI've met you. I've worked with you.
Delete@8:30pm, I'm thinking 7:34pm is a parady at best, or a troll at worst. If anyone has any doubts, look at her FB and you'll see someone who thinks the world and everyone in it revolves around her.
DeleteI know you too 9:08pm
DeleteHIPAA laws require employers to avoid mentioning employees’ health issues. Attorneys are standing by just in case someone mistakenly divulges a health problem of an employee.
ReplyDeleteI see it from another perspective: finally admitting one is getting older and no longer gets the attention they once enjoyed. Like it or not, America focuses on youth and beauty - after hitting 50, most folks will look past you as if you are see-through. It’s fine with those folks who are secure in their identity, but can be brutal for those accustomed to being the “glow” in the room, and don’t recognize their true value as a human. Cheap psychiatry by an admitted idiot, but that’s my take on what may be happening - cheap at 2 cents.
7:57 Julie has always been a MILF. But it the past few years, she is now a GILF.
Delete7:57, agreed. And in 4k you really see the botox injections and the wrinkles lines all over her face. Nothing wrong with that, it's part of again. She's still a total GILF and sexy as hell.
DeleteOut of sight, out of mind. NEXT!
ReplyDeleteI feel like i'm missing something. i've always found julie to have a professional and genuinely likable persona on air. Her vibe doesn't scream drama nor would i've thought her co-workers feel resentment toward her. I recently discovered this site and I'm blown away by all of the negative sentiment expressed toward Julie. I feel like I've watched channel 2 long enough to know if she had some disqualifying flaw or scandal. From what I've read she misses a lot of work and her social media skews heavily on the narcissistic side. Am I missing anything else?
ReplyDelete9:16, anchors are performers. When they do the news they’re performing. What you’re describing is Julie’s television persona.
DeleteYou mentioned you’re new to this site. Welcome! As you spend more time here you’ll begin to realize many of us work in the news industry or did at some point. We know the people Rich writes about. We know many of them very well. Our families know their families.
That’s a long way of saying you can rest assured the themes you find in these comments are accurate, whether it be about Julie or anyone else.
Sure, some of the comments are outlandish and strongly-worded but the underlying theme is still the same.
I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Heather laid into her and told her off.
ReplyDeleteMany of these comments are despicable. While they may be true, how do you know Julie won’t see these? For all anyone knows she may read this blog.
ReplyDeleteJulie is close to retirement. She works in an industry where it’s 110 percent or nothing. I’ve been there. She has the experience and leverage to say “I don’t give a shit THAT much anymore” - it happens. Nobody is allowed to use their expertise and experience in a scaled-down role, which a lot of people would like at a certain age. They can contribute, but they don’t need to build a career resume anymore and want to do it on their time. Employers always want it all.
ReplyDeleteJust got off the ESPN website. It's latest college football player rankings have her son Jake at #75 in the nation...and 15th-ranked QB. Dude threw for 4,096 yards and 33TDs for Fresno State last year and is forecasted for a big year this year.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Julie. Can you explain why his stats require you to take several days off for each game?
DeleteWhy are we wasting so much time and energy on this teleprompter-reading Barbie Doll? She is the definition of superficial.
ReplyDeleteI think all this doodoo about mental health breakdowns is just that, a load of doodoo. My take is she's just burned out and checked out and doesn't want to work there anymore. Simple as that. Can you blame her? She's been doing this for a few decades; she's up there in age, the industry has changed dramatically, and KTVU sounds like a house of horrors to work at. I don't blame her for not wanting to show up. But that's not an excuse for her behavior.
ReplyDeleteShe needs to just formally retire so the station can plan and schedule accordingly. No more distractions. No more drama. No more last-minute scrambles to fill schedules. No more resentment from colleagues when they have to cancel plans with their children and family because Julie called in sick at the last minute.
I suspect that she stays on as a way to fund her luxurious lifestyle or collect some sort of special retirement or financial benefit that kicks in after a specific time period, and now she's just counting down the days until that happens.
KTVU is listing job openings, including anchor/reporter, through it’s Facebook page.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe so many people want Frank back. He couldn't do anything Mibach can't do except Frank did it with hair plugs.
DeleteLOL!!!!
DeleteI worked with Julie when I did at a stint at KTVU a number of years ago. I saw her on her best days. I saw her on her worst days. I still work in local news so I’ve met a lot of people and have encountered a lot of personalities. Some great. Some not so great.
ReplyDeleteJulie is undoubtedly the most self-absorbed and entitled person I’ve ever worked with. This seems to be the prevailing sentiment amongst those of us who encountered her day in and day out.
College football is Sep-Nov what does that have to do with this summer’s absences
ReplyDeleteWhy so much space on this blog is devoted to this prime Donna is beyond me.
ReplyDelete
