Up and Down Bay Area Media Celebrity Status: Drool and Cool; The Tuesday VIP List; Nobody is Safe

KCBS: Down

The anchor shuffle is such an embarrassment, Audacy decided to have its late summer conference in LA, not SF where it was originally scheduled. Victor Zaragosa--traffic guy doing sports? How cheap can you get? And that's the least of their problems

KCSM: Up

The little engine that could. An underrated non-profit FM jazz outlet that continues to put out great, vintage radio with a thrifty budget and limited manpower. Just a gem of a radio station--where's Larry Ellison to dole out a few million when you need it.

KRON: Up

When they put out a better-than-average product--and do so with competent anchors and a underrated set, then even KRON gets the nod up here. Their reporters are still too young and giddy for my taste but I'm not going to quibble. KRON in the last year has begun to both look and feel un-KRON like --complete with a cool streaming site and web product--they deserve props.

KPIX: Down

Maybe the most decrepit TV News station in the Bay Area--a haunted house is 855 Battery--now they're so out of it, they're hiring the wifes of amateur posers like the current mutt late of Seattle. Can they get any worse? Oh you bet they can.

Damon Bruce: Down

The all-sports FM radio putz has been bragging to co-workers I'm the highest-paid guy here!"--until some of the bosses at Audacy kick your ass and tell you to shut up and do your job. Besides, if Audacy's financial status doesn't improve, Bruce will have to migrate back to his hometown Indiana.

Matt Nahigian: Up

The Game's (95.7 FM) PD has taken the station out of the abyss and into relevance with a crafty playbook of mostly sharp-witted hosts with attitude and opinion. Now if only that applied to Bruce and Mark Willard.

KNBR: Down

Just plain yuck! Nothing else needs to be said.

Nikki Medoro: Down

The KGO Radio morning yenta continues to talk about her kids as if they've morphed into being our kids. They haven't. Medoro couldn't execute a solid morning playbook if her life depended on it. Anoother thing: her interviews suck too. The weekly jive with Oakland mayor, Libby Schaaf is a textbook case of softball alley. It would be good if Medoro had a real producer on board to tell her of her mildew but that's too harsh a chore for the current dame who is really KGO's internal snitch.

Steve Moskowitz: Down

Get audited and tell the IRS it's KGO's fault for allowing you airtime. Then again, I'd rather listen to you than Chris Merrill. Thompson (Mark) too.

*The Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame: Down

Sorry folks but nobody really cares. If you wanted to make it legit then you could decide the honorees by sheer talent and legacy as opposed to just naming names for the real goal of getting pub and fiscal relevance. The ceremony too would be a helluva lot better if you had it at a place that serves decent food and limit acceptance speeches to a minute.

*KDFC: Up

Still up when everyone in this area thought at first you were a has-been from day one. Bethoven wins out.

KOIT: Up

They've been consistent for multi-decades now and I. for one, am an advocate. It's still got a winning formula every Christmass time and that's cool with me because it works. A bit too robotic but what the hell.

The Buy Bay Area houses jerks Down

Those ads by the assholes telling you they'll buy your home no matter the condition and no matter the circumstances--basically predatory lenders with cash who are, in reality taking advanatge of people who are down and out and in personal turbulence--I say to these assholes? Fuck you and go stuff it. And to KCBS and KGO and KNBR for running these bastards ads.

The relentless family lawyers morons --namely Habbas and Dolan law firm Down

Who knew Kars4Kids would be refreshing compared to these nauseating lizards.

Lamonica Peters: Up

You say robotic, I say utter cool and network-like--and her anchoring on KTVU the other night was certifiably brilliant. She wrote all her copy and delivered a knockout performance that made KTVU look good and then some.

John Rothmann: Down

All the reasons why this once-decent KGO talker has gone to the crapper--just like KGO. the 415-eight-zero--eight-zero savant, needs a better time and place. He's just so yesterday. Rothmann needs to channel his good friends, Abe Lincoln, Richard Nixon, Harold Stassen and James Madison, for a fireside chat: how to orchestrate better talk radio in afternoon drive.

Jon Miller and Dave Flemming Down

The absurd practice of bitching about every ball/strike call by the umpire is so labored and tired, members of the Giants inner broadcast circle are up in arms over it. And Miller's ridiculous, tired "that was hit 107 MPH off the bat" is out and out pathetic and embarrassing.

Carlos Ramirez Down

Just go away.

Bill Laskey Up

Laskey is a very concise, talented, interesting and cool post-game radio guy and his Giants commentary is first-rate and underrated. He's critical and thought-provking and he's decidedly better than that overbearing schmuck, FP Santangelo, who should go back to emceeing bathtub races in Redwood City.

Pam Moore Down

Pam, people at KRON are beginning to think you make yourself out to be bigger than KRON. You were a long time ago. Just make up your mind already.

Reggie Aqui: Down

You are, hands down, the BIGGEST asshole to grace the seat at Circle7. Who gives a shit about your personal life, your sex life, your diet, your running, your fucked-up habits, it's all sort of BORING and no one cares. You're lucky the mouse house puts up with you.

Dan Ashley: Up

That new high, six-figure extension you're about to sign is all the better with a new wife, Walnut Creek palace and more positive vibes than the PR guy at SFO. Congrats Dan now if only you took control of that hair!

Kristen Sze: Down

You, surprisingly, have more baggage than the United Terminal at SFO.

*Jennifer Seelig and Don Bastida : Down

Must have pictures.

John Lund: Down

"Like you said" guy, Greg Papa's bitch, is an abject moron who is nothing more than a radio retread with a teenage filthy mouth. A redundant, jerky putz who gets jobs because he has some technique that wins out radio program directors. His buddy at KNBR, the PD Kevin Graham, Lund brags, is one such victim--thus, the Bay Area too.

Seattle media: Up

Who'd have thunk the Starbucks denizens caught on to the brilliant, shy, spelling-savvy, media-newsy virtues of one certain guy with the initials of RL and now, if you guys here only made contributions to this blog, well then, life would be so much less difficult.

Bill Martin: Down

""Uh. uh, uh, yeah I had a hand in getting Roberta Gonzales, uh, just, uh, had to get 'her done, uh, uh, done."

*Carolyn Burns Down<p> "Uh, uh, traffic on 101 is, uh, uh, really, uh ...uh, bad and 'that pile-up on Whipple, is, uh terrible becaue THAT road is awful, and THAT accident is, uh, very bad on THAT, uh, Bay Area roadway."

KRON weather screens: Up

"You like us, you really like us!" Weather boards at KRON studios channeling Sally Field.

    1. When he's not doing the contrarian shit, every blue moon, Ratto can spin a good yarn. I don't care for Damon Bruce but every now and then, he makes a good point. I said as much here recently.

    2. Last week I tuned into "The Game" because Larry Krueger was co-hosting with Damon. Damon referred to the 49ers stadium as being located in "Tijuana". Whether that was a reference to the large Latino population of Santa Clara County or an exaggeration of location is irrelevant. It was racist. Where was the outrage? Why wasn't he outed like Krueger was from KNBR? Because no-one is listening? Krueger had a very nervous laugh in response.

Hes never got over the 49ers moving to santa clara,it still pisses him off and hes go out of his way all the time to make sure that you the listener know that he the I know more then you because I'm smarter then you sports talk show host hates they play in "corporate" santa clara and not run down candlestick park because it had an aura about they cant replicate in santa clara..its Bruce's same shtick for eight years now

  3. I can’t with the banter between Reggie and Drew. They’re basically the TV version of Fernando and Greg in the Morning from 99.7 🙄

  4. "The relentless family lawyers morons --namely Habbas and Dolan law firm"

They're pretty bad, but what about the relentless dick shop promos with the 80-year-old man and his intimacy issues. Do we really have to hear about that? I'm off KCBS on onto Bloomberg more and more.

  5. I LOVE REGGIE! I love the whole crew in the AM on channel 7. i am not a whippersnapper either. It's time for news to reflect it's audience or die. Old codgers don't cut it anymore. I miss the 70s and 80s just as much as you, but it's NOT the 70s or 80s anymore. evolve or die.

  7. KCSM is wonderful... musically. But a little more transparency would be nice -- management there has a tendency to fudge the facts (most recently, re: the departure of Carl "Sonny" Leyland; the on-air promos said it was "his decision" to end his show -- yeah, because they wanted him to take a big pay cut!)

  8. I paid attention to Roberta G this week. Shockingly laughable. She moves out of the screen shot repeatedly and suddenly reappears, over exaggerates every hand gesture and body movement so that it gets in the way of her delivery. Poor clothing choices also.
Reggie Aqui, holy Moses terrible with his delivery and screen presence. Unwatchable!

    1. @ 11:34am OMG! Amen! Yesterday she was wearing a way-too-tight dress you could see she had Spanx on! Cringy! Then everytime she move the mic made a scratching noise as it rub against the material on her dress or something. It was laughable and sad! She & KTVU need to DO BETTER!

      Delete
    2. I was pointing this out months ago but Rich was censoring every comment. She dresses wayyyy too tight for her body. It's not a good look at all.

      Delete
    3. She used to do the dumb hand gestures with KPIX. And she is no metorologist. Dana King would just laugh at her, not with her.

  9. When did Reggie talk about his sex life?? I know he was a strong supporter of the Pride Parade even hosting the show without Drew Tuma. Thank you San Francisco hiring Reggie forcing many anchors to quit and away from the jerk.

  12. > [KRON] and a underrated set...

There I have to disagree with you so much. Aside from the fake view, which looks oddly canted, as if they were broadcasting from the Millennium Tower, the desk looks too small; the anchors are uncomfortably close together, with all this dead space on the sides. Terrible set, and they keep getting worse. The best sets were in the late 90s-early 2000s, and it's been going downhill ever since.

  13. "The weekly jive with Oakland mayor, Libby Schaaf is a textbook case of softball alley"

Everything with the media and Libby Schaaf is softball. That's how she keeps her job: she gives them free content (as long as it's softball) so they can fill the same amount of time with fewer writers and editors and photogs, and in turn they offer her softball topics to make her look good. A win-win for both if them and lose-lose for the voters. From organizations that are supposed to have the "public trust" and deliver news and not propaganda.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don’t care for the show, but I’ve heard Nikki solicit for emails and texts when promoting the Schaaf interview. Have you sent in any questions? They may be politically aligned, but a talk show is not news. She recently brought up the need to clean up and clear out the homeless camps. How is that soft ball? I doubt Schaaf asked to talk about that.

  14. I thought it might just be me, but i can't take Rothmann for more than 5 minutes, I like the content, but he has this horrific tick that drives me fucking nuts.

    1. Counted up all of them over a full 3 hour show once just for the hell of it and it came to 47 times!
And yet not once did he disclose his e mail in the same program, but he brags about the dozens and dozens of e mails " pouring" in anyway.. since at least 75 to 80% of Rothmanns callers are the same ones you wonder why he he feels the need to repeat the number so often

      Delete
    2. Any time you hear him say he’s flooded with emails, that’s just code for “I want people to think there’s public support and pressure behind a topic I want to discuss”. He also says the lines are full all the time… check for a busy signal next time he says that. Everything he claims should be taken with a grain of salt.

      Delete
    3. Rothman is a male version of Pat Thurston, I don't why anyone would call unless they agree with them. They goo goo over anyone agreeing and lambaste anyone that doesn't quite rudely.

      Delete
    4. My main issue with john is the way he over dramatizes everything, he takes himself way too seriously and he can be a bit pompous at times with people who both agree and disagree with him

  15. Lamonica Peters is robotic and homely. Reminds me of the old joke... "I ran into Lamonica on the street. I asked how much does she charge to haunt a house. She retorted, "How many rooms?" But Rich is definitely crushing on her.

  16. Re: Steve Moskowitz & the IRS give-away to the wealthy

Anybody noticed neither the Bay Area's radio news stations nor radio talk show hosts ever question whether these give-taxpayer-money-to-the-rich programs contribute to inflation? Plenty of inflation theories expounded, but this one? Verboten topic I guess. No complaints toward SM btw, just doing what America's politicians want him to do.

  23. Would you please stop with the "I'm switching to Bloomberg" crap! Half of their programming is a simulcast of their video shows plus it is a worldwide financial network not a local news or talk station dedicated to the Bay Area and Northern California. With their resources and global audience, they had better be a first class operation, but they do not have true local focus. A few local newsreaders plus stories from the Silicon Valley do not qualify them as being a local station. Yes, Bloomberg is a fine financial network. Now, give it a rest!

    2. I mostly listen to KCBS in the car on FM 106.9. Bloomberg is right next to it at 103.7 FM-HD2. When KCBS ( or it's advertising) is unlistenable, the alternative is Bloomberg.

      Delete
    3. I can get Bloomberg on my car radio, but not on my portable radio in my house, I live in Concord.

      Delete
    4. What do you mean Bloomberg is on 103.7 FM-HD2? Where is that and what is that? I stream them on my phone when I am driving as I can not get them on the radio. Do I need HD? Is it just an FM thing?

  24. KPIX is not much worse off than its corporate sister KCBS in Los Angeles, a perennial underperfomer. The Viacom bigwigs have already taken its 0.0-Nielsen-rated (seriously, there is really such a thing) 4:30-7 a.m. newsblock and given it to duopoly partner KCAL 9 to see if the indie, which has a good news rep in prime time, can budge the needle. The L.A. team is woefully understaffed; maybe they'll ask Sara Donchey to come back for a few shifts, after all, she's not from Seattle, what good is she?

  25. Dibley and Ratto deserve hazard pay working with Willard and Bruce.

  26. Thank God ‘Amy G.’ was taken off the Giants’ broadcasts a few years ago. If she added zero to the broadcast, that would have been better than the annoying ‘interviews’ she did from the stands. Minor league quality with an annoying voice and a fake smile. The Giants threw her a bone by having her run their website. as creepy Larry Baer is her biggest fan.

  28. 95.7 the game got BLOWN out by KNBR in the last book and specifically in the month of June. How do you lose when you have the warriors during a title run?! That’s all I needed to see. The signal is weak, the talent are retreads, and no one cares about the NBA in July. I think Nahagian has done the best he can in a weak situation but cmon, this station ain’t making money. How long can entercom keeping pouring in cash?

  30. Actually Zaragosa is one of the more underrated radio personalites around here. He's a legend on urban radio here (KBLX, KMEL...Not this audience's niche... I get it). When KBLX re-arranged the deck chairs, he went over to corporate cousin and did the traffic. He also had a pretty decent show on another corporate cousin, 95.7... The Three Amigos. Three Latinio dudes passionately talkin sports like they were sitting in Ricky's. Yeah, the show was a hit the dudes ( of all walks) getting lunch at a Hayward taco truck... Suffice to say, he's legit on sports.
