Desperate KPIX Hires Suzanne Phan from Seattle--Wife of Ryan Yamamoto; Sunday Circus (Again and Again) at KCBS; Send in the Clowns; KGO-Rothmann Ineptitude Continues; KTVU Weekend Bore But Lamonica Peters Saves the Day; Monday Open

PATHETIC KPIX HIRES YAMAMOTO WIFE FROM SEATTLE

Maybe she can teach hubby how to form a personality: KPIX has sunk to depth of desperation to outright abysmal.

They've hired Seattle's (KOMO) Suzanne Phan,(pictured, top), the wife of ill-suited, out-of-place Ryan Yamamoto. She's on board soon --is this a combo deal? My God, what a farce.

PIX is an ongoing DISASTER and this move is sure to create more friction in the newsroom. It now only shows how incompetent new GM, Scott Warren is but it further illustrates just how AWFUL and TOXIC it is at 855 Battery, a TV News wasteland and a certified garbage pit with inmates running the asylum.

*While you're at it, PIX, maybe you should also hire Liz Cook's brother, I hear he's just fantastic ...but WAIT!, Vern Glenn's wife would make a fine weather anchor on the weekend!

*The JOKE that is KCBS on Sunday morning still takes place and yesterday was no exception --the usual DEAD AIR and ANCHOR MALPRACTICE--gaffes, miscues, WRONG traffic and sports sounders--out of blue LONG filler segments of outside market features that made no sense and the list goes on...

Lisa Chan, the ilustrious, bizarre, no energy misfit was once again on the news anchor desk and was so BAD, she had to be rescued by equal AWFUL, Eric Thomas, who sounded as if he was auditioning for "Star Search."

The KCBS circus is a non-stop Sunday freak show, bring your friends and enjoy the cotton candy!

*KGO's clueless John Rothmann would rather selfishly do it his way: refusing to do various guests (except woeful has-been Jan Wahl) and skipping interviews on all fronts so he can talk about mundane topics that NOBODY cares about. Rothmann, as I've pointed out numerous times now, is UNFIT to do afternoon drive. It's just ASTOUNDING that inept KGO allows this to take place but PD, Lee Hammer, has an excuse because Cumulus doesn't have any money to hire a real host, which is why they fired Chip Franklin and let morons like Chris Merill do eternal fill-in.

*KTVU on the weekend: the pompous THREE: Frank Mallicoat, Claudine Wong and Rosemary Orozco: about as exciting as a Modesto bingo party.

Mallicoat is retread-central auditioning for his next gig in Ceder Rapids, Iowa; Wong maintaining her hold on being about as exciting as week-old donuts at 7-11; Orozco just hanging on so she can sell a few more summer dresses for her fashion business. KTVU is a CESSPOOL of has-been anchors and vanilla news presentation, what a JOKE!

*The last time KTVU had any semblence of cred and esteem: Dennis Richmond and Elaine Corral.

*Something FRESH-NEW on KTVU Saturday night: Lamonica Peters anchoring and it was fantastic --of course KTVU will now find a way to SCREW IT UP again as they most certainly will.

  1. As I wrote earlier:

KCBS this morning had Victor the traffic guy doing sports. I like Victor on traffic he's great but when you switch all these spots like Jason doing anchor instead of business (which he's back on business) things get a little confusing.

  5. KPIX sounds even dumber than I thought. I was just chatting online with one of their anchors last night. He sounded even more bitter than usual. Now I know why. What a collection of idiots. Just what the station needed—the wife of their biggest loser is joining the team, probably at pretty nice coin.

  9. Re: J Rothmann's KGO program. I concur, this program is not a good fit for drive-time. Seems a simple, common-sense solution to swap the time slots of JR's 4-7 pm with Bohannon's 7-10 pm.

    1. Wait, what? 1:47 wants KGO’s syndicated Southern right-wing talk show moved from nighttime into the 4 pm slot? Would the Bay Area afternoon audience go for that? Do they really want to hear callers who sound like extras from “Deliverance”?

      Delete
    2. Corporate budget cuts! It’s always been a challenge to program against evening TV and now it’s worse. There’s just not enough audience or revenue to to pay for a local host after 7pm. They’re running a National show Cumulus already owns. It’s not that difficult to understand, especially since KGO has NEVER been profitable under Cumulus ownership.

      Delete
    3. By extras from Deliverance do you mean Pat Thurston's callers or the people that attend events at the Commonwealth Club?

  10. My ex-wife saw Dennis Richmond in San Ramon at a jewlery store over the weekend. Sadly, she said Dennis looks feeble and frail, weighs about 100 lbs. He could probably still come back and do a better job then Mibach, Mallicoat and Haener. Geez! Sounds like a law firm... not news readers.

  12. What timeslot and what position for Phan? KRON has a couple together on TV doing New Years Eve Live and NBC 11 also has a couple, but the female is strong enough to kick out the husband on TV and take his cash for divorce settlement. Another one, Lawrence Karnow and Sharon Chin!

  13. Rothmann was best suited for doing the late nights back in the day. His routinely boring shows and limited topics were a perfect cure for insomnia. He never fails to put me right to sleep no matter what time he's on. What will it be tonight? - Covid, climate change, and Trump/January 6th or Ukraine, climate change and Covid? Or maybe he will spice it up with more talk of the murals at his high school. He really does not want to know what I'm thinking. He only likes to hear the sound of his own voice.

  15. Let's talk about Seattle, Washington for a quick minute.;
I find it incredible that their most famous landmark remains the
Space Needle, built in 1962. I was there in 1980, as part of the Navy. I thought the Needle looked out of date even then, something from a Jetson's Era tableau.

Nothing awful about it, but 60 years later, isn't there anything else in town to brag about?
Apparently the Space Needle is the Eiffel Tower of Seatlle!

  16. Rich, Chip’s perpetual sneering anger was bad radio. I switched off as soon as his show started, and I have to believe I wasn’t alone. I’ll suspect his firing might have had something to do with bad ratings. Can you prove that’s not correct?

  18. My ears are still bleeding from the Paulie Mac segment with David Hollander. High school students could have done a better mixing job of a fake show.. Sounded like it was a tape of Hollander talking to himself. Every few minutes PM would say " Ow wow" " That's right" at a much louder level. Brought back memories of the MASH episode where they faked a World Series Broadcast - only the MASH episode was suppose to be funny.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I love that episode too but for the record it wasn't a world series broadcast, just an ordinary game where Frank was betting and cleaning up. What they never explained was how they managed to broadcast over the camp PA on *the same frequency* that Frank was tuning into to get the real games. That would take some doing.

      Delete
    2. First, MASH was a comedy, so it destroys the comedic flow if they have to get into the nuances of how something like that got accomplished. Second, it's not all that difficult to do. Someone who understands how a radio works would jury-rig Frank's radio by adjusting the tuning coil so that when Frank thinks he's tuned to Armed Forces Radio Network (on, let's say, 1000 khz), the radio is actually tuned to, say, 950 khz, or 1060, or some similar nearby frequency. Then Hawkeye would need a mini-transmitter that put out a weak signal on that same alternate frequency. Voila, Frank thinks he's tuned to AFRN but is actually tuned to MASH Radio! At the same time, the guys can monitor the actual AFRN on the actual 1000 khz to hear the real game. A solution any company radioman could have whipped up out of spare parts.

  28. The brothers Judd and John Hambrick (KTVU and KRON respectively in the 1970s) thankfully never anchored the same newscast, enough Hambrick to make you sick. I was always hoping for one or the other to go up or down the dial so we could hear a hubby-wifey Ronn Owens / Jan Black program. Now THAT would have been appointment radio.

Another married couple working at the same TV station is Joe Buttitta and Kelsey Gerckens at KEYT in Santa Barbara. He anchors the morning newscast, She's the chief meteorologist. They were contestants on The Amazing Race a few years ago and won their season.

Also got a chance to watch the "Now" hybrid newscast on CBS News Bay Area. Anne Makovic deserves better.

  44. Rest in peace Rama. A predictable make-peace-not-war schtick but always made without rancour or ill temper.

The same can’t always be said about John Rothmann. Late last month, two callers in a row took John to task for sycophancy to the Democrats insofar as seldom devoting segments to current problems afflicting the Biden administration.

John quickly shut down the first caller, saying: “The hate, vituperation and intolerance I’m receiving tonight is very reassuring.”

The follow-on caller, Gene from Lafayette, was able to make his points despite John’s fulminations.

Gene: “I listen to KGO a lot. I listen to you a lot. There’s no doubt you are more educated than I am, and you handle the crowd quite nicely. However...your promotion of the Democratic Party is so one-sided now.”

John: Excuse me! Who was the most critical person, here on KGO, about Bernie Sanders? I was! Of Bill Clinton? I was! So don’t give me that (criticism).”

    Gene: “All in the past...”

John: (starts talking loudly over Gene)

Gene, persisting: “Let’s talk about the present.”

John: “I have. I do that every night.”

Gene: “And here’s the other thing I also notice about you: You’re starting to really get upset a lot. Which leads me to believe that you’re getting frustrated and weak and angry.”

John: “I’m not frustrated, weak or angry!”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's John show he can talk about whatever he pleases, or whatever the thinks his listeners are interested in. Have you listened to Sean Hannity, Mark Levin or other right wing hosts how fair are they to the democrats? Tom Sullivan is a conservative host that at times are very critical of Trump and other republicans, other than that most hosts are one sided. Did you ever listen to the late great Gene Burns, he could get frustrated and angry, and tells his callers so in no uncertain terms.

He didn’t make any errors as we all know the regular anchors are guilty of doing every newscast. Lamonica Peters started off the newscast serious and a bit nervous but by midway she was becoming more comfortable at the desk. I find her professional and poised and I look forward to seeing more of her and Brooks at the anchor desk. I also have to mention Lamonica’s smile, she should smile more often.
