Fallout from its coverage of the Warriors'vicory parade on Monday has been met with an almost universal distaste from the rank and file inside Jack London Square at The Firm's Bay Area O and O (owned/operated) outlet.
It is so intense, I'm told, even KTVU's junior staffers felt lot of angst and discomfort. And that feeling made its way to management. It's not a pretty picture.Chief among the complaints and disgust: the performance by some of KTVU's major air personalities, including, notably, Roberta Gonzales and Claudine Wong. Sal Castaneda has also recived an inordinate amount of criticism from staff but not nearly the derision and outright hostility centered on Gonzales and Wong.
A KTVU source was blunt:
"Look, it was a parade. We knew it wasn't like we're dealing with a natural disaster, but the presentation was really poor. It wasn't our best moment and we've haven't had a lot of those in recent years."
I didn't see all of Gonzales' act but I saw enough and I didn't need to see (or hear) any more. And Claudine Wong's anchoring looked about as amateur and embarrassing as it can get. So, frankly, I'm not surprised about the pair. And while I think more highly of Castaneda, his disingenuous "cool" look/demeanor has become an issue with viewers and not just at the parade but staff at KTVU.
Roberta was brought to KTVU to do fill-in weather (and largely act as Bill Martin's insurance policy against early termination-it was Martin who pushed for her hire)--but Gonzales' transgressions as an attention bore has been universally scorned at KTVU and is the source of outright anger and disillusion inside the newsroom. No matter her huge following on social media, Roberta is dismissed as a supreme diva at FOX2."She's just over the top and it's an act and not a very good act," said a source.
Agree. Like "me, me, me" is Roberta's mantra and it's constant. She just can't help herself.
Wong's arrogance and diva-like attitude has long been felt at KTVU so her shrill bizarro broadcast on Monday only intensified relations between the staff.
Again, I'm not surprised both she and Gonzales have earned the derision that exists--it's only now evident and obvious I'm not the only critic. Several of the Bay Area viewers and KTVU's inner sanctum possess similar feelings. If KTVU still possessed the powerful ratings they once had, this probably wouldn't be an issue. But KTVU's ratings have plunged--including all-important 10 PM News numbers and better believe it's most definitely an issue now.
At KTVU more drama. What else is new.
I noted some of the players didn't turn in a very good parade performance either.
ReplyDeleteHow much you want to bet that Draymond Green becomes the next Dennis Rodman? He's a foul mouthed fool.
DeleteWhen I saw Roberta flailing about on the street, I turned the tv off. Jan Wahl’s mutant sister.
DeletePeter and Davis Felch
KCBS
@4:13 how did you type with both hands clutching your pearls so hard?
Delete4:13 Draymond doesn't cross-dress...doesn't have a nose ring or body piercings...and has normal black hair. His personality is much needed on the Warriors--who have a bunch of "really good guys." Three of them are sons of former NBA superstars and thus, grew up in upper-class bringings (Steph, Klay, and GPII.) and don't have that killer "hood" mindset needed in today's mostly-black NBA.
DeleteYou sound like a White Trump-supporting NASCAR fan who doesn't like flashy sports figures.
Flashy MINORITY sports figures.
Gonzo is wacko. A sad clown.
ReplyDeleteRich, please give a warning if putting a picture of Roberta. My eyes are burning!
ReplyDeleteWhere was Joe Fonzi?
ReplyDeleteWong is a zero. "News" People doing sports events always ends up badly. Give Gasia some credit just coming out and saying I dont care for sports.
ReplyDeleteRoberta is the bay area's Rudy Guilaini, the crazy drunk Aunt. wonder how many conversations by the producers is how many fifth do we have to get Roberta pre gamed to have her ready to go. SAD
I clicked on KTVU for a brief moment and right away I felt bored already. If they had put Joe Fonzi, Julie Haener and Allie Rasmus instead maybe ok that can be decent coverage...
ReplyDeleteClaudine is the next morning anchor getting more fame and might be the next evening anchor one day when Julie leaves.
ReplyDeleteNo, she won't.
DeleteHeather Holmes may have something to say about that.
DeleteHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Claudine Wong has the personality of Melba Toast. Her "reporting" is "repromptering" with no great ability to adlib or work outside-of-the-box. Just like her interview "skills". Other than than, she's great and perfect at FOX 2.
DeleteI really miss the days of Kevin O'Brian as GM!
For what it's worth, the crew at "building a better bay area" hardly distinguished themselves either. Screaming, over the top adulation, and just plain juvenile behavior should have nothing to do with journalism.
ReplyDeleteIt was a victory parade. Every TV station was all giddy and cheerleader like the whole parade.
ReplyDeleteIt was a party and you guys sound like it should have been a somber event like a funeral.
Journalists shouldn't be part of the story. They need to be impartial. But the sports teams love seeing the stations kissing their ass. Objectivity out the window. Most of the news people working on TV aren't journalists.
DeleteThank you! 4:17 how old are you? It is literally a celebration parade, let everyone have their fun.
Delete@718 - And be numbskulls like you.
DeleteAt least there were no Jordan Bell parade repeats by any of the players.
ReplyDeleteGonzalez and Wong are magnificent. If you don’t like watching them, change the channel. If you work at KTVU, you don’t like the way some of your fellow workers report things…QUIT. Do your job and worry only about YOU.
ReplyDeleteThanks for chiming in Pam
DeletePam Cook in da house!!!
DeleteHey 339, go back to your tech job and write some code. You sound like a techie with a sense of entitlement.
DeleteThe media should report on events — not become an extension of them. That happened alarmingly all day Monday. They should know better.
ReplyDeleteGive me a break, it’s a party, a celebration of victory. If you’re seriously critiquing parade coverage I feel sorry for you and your capacity for fun.
Delete721: I feel sorry for you and your demise into becoming a zombie. Happy trails!
DeleteRich, I also thought NBCSBA did the best job on the parade but the serious news of the day was the Edgewood fire on the Peninsula and Ch 4 had te best coverage hands down!
ReplyDeletePam Moore and Ken Wayne worked it as true professionals Channels 2, 5, and 7 were worthless on this. When there is local news I will go to 4
Very sad Pam Moore is retiring. Hope they get someone competent. I this that she is terrific
Yeah Lloyd Lacuesta lives near the fire and called in from retirement to "report" on the fire. Tried to help his old station. Come back Lloyd!
DeleteSend HH. Sexy and smart.
ReplyDeleteI for one will always see the face of Heather and remember the snot bubble she wore on live tv. Some images, once seen, cannot be unseen.
DeleteNo.... Send Henry Tennenbaum
DeleteLove Henry.
DeleteSince when is 9k in Facebook followers a "huge social media following"? By today's standards that's actually pretty paltry.
ReplyDeleteAww, c’mon. The interns in the newsroom are jealous they couldn’t go to the parade. Sucks to be them.
ReplyDeleteI work at ktvu (back of the house - not in front of the camera) and when I came in on Tuesday morning it was as though everyone was in a state of shell-shock. The performance of Roberta and Claudine was the talk of the building and it was as if we were all just waiting for the fallout. The eerie energy on Tuesday was even worse than after Frank’s Memorial Day 2021 performance. It was unlike anyone we had experienced here or at other stations where we’ve worked.
ReplyDeleteOnce the Warriors went up 3-2 in the series there were many conversations at work about who would anchor and who report from the parade.
There seemed to be a general hope that Julie Haener would have a key role given her excellent NFC championship coverage and her widely-respected coverage of the Chinese New Year parade each year. There was also widely-held hope that Heather Holmes, Rosemary Orozco, and/or Frank Mallicoat would be along the Parade route, as each enjoys sports and are comfortable interacting with viewers in casual atmospheres. Most were resigned to the fact Sal would have a role on set. What I can tell you is almost everyone was praying Roberta WOULD NOT be sent. Also, most felt strongly Claudine shouldn’t go because of the over the top, fake excitement that she exudes. She needs to just be herself.
Oh, and while Claudine and Roberta had disastrous performances, the same cannot be said for Joe Fonzi. Everyone I spoke to on Tuesday agreed Joe was the star of the show with his in depth insight and knowledge of the Warriors, whether that be past, present, or future.
Allie Rasmus would have been perfect. Very understated in her delivery, she is the most versatile talent at KTVU.
DeleteRoberta has got to GO!!! She's worse then Jan Wahl! I heard her, Rosemary & Pam Cook are going to have a Fatal Threeway on Friday Night Smackdown in the near future. What happened to KTVU? Sad
ReplyDeleteWhich eye do I focus on, with Roberta???
ReplyDeleteWong is a stiff, but RoGo rules, you guys are a bunch of boobs.
ReplyDeleteYou must be drinking the same stuff RoGo is and probably as much,
DeleteWhat you see on air is representative to the poor leadership or lack thereof in this country. No direction. A rudderless ship. To quote David Byrne "We're on a road to Nowhere".
