He was 81.
Bartlett, I'm told by a person with knowledge of the situation, had been battling many medical issues.I remember him at KPIX for over a decade, but he actually had a longer run at Circle7, KGO--in the late 80's all the way up to the early 2000s, Mr. Bartlett was Mister Weather, with a wry sense of humor and an engaging personality.
Bartlett's signature identity: flipping his weather pen/pointer in the air and catching it in the same motion. It was corny at first but it eventually looked kind of cool.
His forecasts were always spot on too and he knew his stuff. It was obvious.
He was a terrific person and knew how to retire with a glorious wife and their beautiful horses and dogs. I wish I had taken his personal advice long ago.
ReplyDeleteYes, Christine, Yes. Thank you for your beautiful recollections.

What was his advise CC?
DeleteYes, many of us would like to know the advice he gave Christine
DeleteShe said it was personal. That means it was between him and her and not for us to know. Let it go.
DeleteFacelift?
DeleteVery saddened by this news.
ReplyDeleteJoel's pleasant on-air presence was delightful, and he was the best TV meteorologist that I've ever seen. I remember when he actually graded his forecasting, which was a indicator of his honest and modest nature (i.e., he wasn't afraid to admit when he was wrong, which wasn't often).
In my many decades of watching TV news, Joel Bartlett was one of my favorites.
I watch him on KPIX 5 in the 80s with the funny weather format, sizzling sound when they show the weather temp on the background. Never knew he went to KGO 7, I rewatch his video online and didn't even know Dan Noyes was once a fill in anchor on Prime Time before doing Investigation Report.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I had no idea he went to 7.
DeleteR.I.P.
ReplyDeleteHere in New York we have Janice Huff (remember her from KRON 4) on NBC New York, channel 4; Lonnie Quinn on CBS New York, channel 2; Lee Goldberg on ABC 7 New York, channel 7; and Mr. G (Irv Gikofsky) on WPIX, channel 11; and Nick Gregory on FOX 5 New York, channel 5.
Quinn also reports regularly, on the CBS Evening News. Like Joel Bartlett in his day, Quinn seems like a cheerful and fun character who knows his stuff.
DeleteWhat's with the Roll Call?
DeleteI'd forgotten about the pen flipping. It always perplexed me why Joel went from weekday weather anchor at KPIX to weekend weather guy at KGO.

ReplyDeleteNice article about a nice man.
Here is another write up that may be of interest.

Rich, do you know where Joel retired to? I'm not asking for a friend. Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteBartlett was a PG&E weather forecaster for many years too. His forecasts would be used to determine how much natural gas was needed to supply heating for consumer and industrial customers.
ReplyDeleteRIP.
Great guy RIP
ReplyDeleteHellooo, Bay Area
ReplyDeleteWe need someone like Lloyd Lindsay Young to liven up the weather reporting scene.
Lloyd Lindsay Young was a hammy weather guesser. Joel Bartlett, a scientist from the days when a meteorology degree meant something, was in a whole different calibre.
DeleteI remember as a kid growing up watching him on channel 5 with Mac, Wendy and Walker. Those were the days when KPIX had better management with the news than it is today. Rest in Peace Joel Barlett
ReplyDeleteAgreed. I was a young immigrant kid at the time. I used to watch Divorce Court, The People’s Court and then would watch KPIX news to learn English plus I also had a deep crush on Kate Kelly (MAMA MIA!!).
DeleteI digress: Mr Bartlett was always a joy to watch with his pen trick and laughed whenever he didn’t catch it which happened a few times. RIP Sir
Same here. Only one left from that classic newscast is Wendy. Joel RIP.
DeleteHe seemed like a nice person, not just a persona.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing I thought of when I saw the headline of his death was the "marker flipping". He always did seem pleasant on TV. Hard to believe he was 81. I guess we're all getting older.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this it brought back something my mom always said about him. She loved him as a weatherman. Yet he had a habit of constantly swallowing before he started a sentence. I never noticed until she pointed it out. then I cold never unsee it.
ReplyDeleteRest in Peace Mr Bartlett
