Kapler, chose to work on Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish New Year. Even the most non-religious Jews, (like myself) do not work on Yom Kippur. It's considered almost taboo to do otherwise. Sandy Koufax, the HOF pitcher for the LA Dodgers, did not pitch on Yom Kippur. The first game of the 1965 World Series, no less.
It is that sacred of a holiday.
Kapler, obviously, has a right to be non-observant. I assume he did what he had to do. I wish someone of the SF Sports media corps that cover the Giants would have asked Kapler about his decision. I mean, it's not out of left field. I asked John Shea if he thought it was a legit question and he said yes, it was. Shea, who covers baseball for the Chronicle, wasn't at the ballpark on Thursday but would pass on my query. Kapler wasn't asked anything about his working on Yom Kippur.
Whatever.
I believe that Bob Melvin, the manager of the A's is also Jewish. He also worked on Thursdsy.
ReplyDeleteIf you're the manager of something it's very apparent if you're not there. Your reputation suffers if you're not there. Not everyone knows the reason you're not there, they just know that you're not there. If you're not there how can you be managing it. Some very public roles and responsibilities don't work well if you're not there.
ReplyDeleteIt's a new world out there. A lot of people don't follow anything anymore. Some, It's all about me and others just don't care. Sad situation we're in.
ReplyDeleteJust una problema with your analysis. Most of the world's wars and brutalizations have been because of religion, not despite it.
DeleteI won’t even use the toilet on the sabbath. Kaplar should be ashamed.
ReplyDeleteDamn. That’s some Old Testament sh*t Saul. No pun intended.
DeleteThis is bad. Even Larry Baer took the day off from sexting.
ReplyDeleteOh for Chrissakes. I am Jewish and MANY of my Jewish friends work on Yom Kippur. This is truly a nonstory.
ReplyDeleteNo one, whether Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, atheist by birth is required to follow any particular breed of mumbo jumbo.
ReplyDeletePut a bra on Christine. I’m tired of your boobs bouncing off of me when you walk.
DeleteAnother day and another aweful take by Craft
DeleteComments such as those from 12:25 and 12:36 PM make Rich's blog an entertaining place to visit.
ReplyDeleteSome funny stuff, mix of Yogi Berra and John Madden
ReplyDeleteThanks for mentioning Sandy Koufax, and the '65 Series. Many actually criticized Sandy for that decision, but IMO it was very noble.
ReplyDeleteI have ancestors who died at Auschwitz.
ReplyDeleteIt's none of your damn business what he does, and totally out of line to even ask about it. Jews have a right to be non-observant, without being hassled, especially by other Jews.
Koufax was Koufax (and the only dodger I ever almost liked). Not applicable.
Rich -- do you comment on the many newscasters and reporters who work on Christmas? Easter? This is a non-issue. Everyone is free to practice religion in (almost) any way they see fit.
ReplyDeleteNon Jew here, but the Dodgers are nipping at our buts, one game behind and 15 to play.I don't want a 2010 replay. Watched it at Scoma's with the waiters celebrating my Mom's birthday!
ReplyDeleteGive Kap a break!
Dennis O'Donnell did not work, either!!!

Yeah I believe rothmann was off the last two nights, because had to shut it down five seconds after chrissy Merrill stank it up, but they just said he had the night off, didn't say why..
ReplyDeleteBob Melvin has nothing to atone for. Kapler, OTOH, ...
ReplyDeleteI'm Jewish and almost always worked on Yom Kippur. Admittedly I'm not very observant. I'm also told that there are Christians who work on Christmas.
