Final Days at KTVU for Somerville Likely; Bad Morning at KCBS (Again); Kapler Clarification; CNN looks to SF Bureau; Saturday Schmooze

PEOPLE at KTVU are now more than ever resigned to the fact, Frank Somerville, is in his FINAL days at the Bay Area Fox O and O.

After a series of bizarre, disturbing, and sad episodes on the air, including Thursday's disjointed 5 PM newscast, (with a shocked Andre Senior), Somerville is likely done at KTVU on or likely before his contract ending (March, 2022)--the insiders at 2 I sppke to say Somerville "is struggling mightily"--furthermore, he appears to be haing difficulty fighting "inner demons" affecting his personal life involving a divorce and "other personal things."

*Another awful morning (Saturday) at KCBS with Jennifer Hodges (anchor) playing wrong sounders and mixed-up sports actualities --this is now the norm at all-news 740 AM (and 106.9 FM)--the only shock now at KCBS is when all this doesn't happen.

*It wasn't so much Gabe Kapler working on Yom Kippur ur--as I NOTED, but many of you chose to gloss over, the BIG deal for me: why did not one Bay area media member NOT ask Kapler the question why?; yes, Sandy Koufax set the precedent, but too many writers here have the Giants and booster club mentality up their arse.

*KRON's Lawrence Karnow on weather: emerging as the TOP Bay Area TV News weather guesser.

*CNN is looking at Embarcadero-area bay-front property to OPEN a new, SF bureau by the spring of 2022 and even for HUGE-pockets CNN, that ain't cheap.

*KOIT might begin its Christmas 24-7 music deal the early part of October and why is that no surprise.

*Wayne Freedman's request for a raise at KGO--three times in 3 years--not only was the reason behind his sudden "retirement", it zipped his move out of KGo and OUT of the SF Bay Area. No trips to Disneyland for Freedman.

  1. Lawrence Karnow was good when he was at the other station he was at here in the bay area. I forget which one it was! Anyway, I just remember he was let go or something which was somewhat sad because he was good, but he just didn't fit in the pretty boy mode. That having been said, there are SO MANY people in bay area stations who should not be on the air, and yet, they are. Horseface Fortson is one of them, along with Steve Harvey's daughter over at KRON.

    1. Karnow was at KPIX and he's a wackadoodle.

  2. CNN is a waste. Low IQ individuals and people at airports are the only ones that watch them.

At least Yahoo reports the actual news, front and center headline this morning: SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The mayor of San Francisco was spotted dancing and singing along to live music without a mask at an indoor nightclub, despite a strict order by her public health department that requires wearing masks at indoor establishments unless someone is actively eating or drinking.

All the brainiacs tune into Fox and NewsMax.

      > At least Yahoo reports the actual news

Yahoo is a news aggregator, brainiac. It does not "report" anything.

CNN is as bad as MSLSD. Same idiotic viewers/voters that needed Rothmann's help filling out the yes/no recall ballot.

  3. Why? you ask? Why would anyone's religious or lack of religious involvement be the business of the news media? See Bill of Rights. See Bill of Rights. It's called freedom.

    2. I’m so tired of people using freedom as a reason for being anti vax. Or for stealthing

    3. 2:41...how so?I'm a lawyer. I already took the constitutional law class. You've probably heard of our constitutional law professor, Anthony Kennedy? See Bill of Rights, specifically the first amendment which gives you the absolute freedom to believe or not believe anything you wish, in the religious sense.

  4. Hey Rich, it's the Bay Area - Kapler is more likely to be criticized for even having a religion than for how he practices it.

  5. I don't remember anyone questioning Coach Robert Saleh of the 49ers last year if he worked or coached on a Muslim holy day. It's not news.

  6. In regards to Wayne... if they really wanted him, they would have signed him to a new contract three years ago. He just couldn't take a hint.

  7. Frank needs to go. I can certainly sympathize with what he's going through off-camera, but he's become an expensive distraction with absolutely no credibility. He gets paid half a million bucks to throw on a suit and read a teleprompter for a few hours a night. A clean break might actually allow him to effectively fight the demons that are haunting him. I wish him well.

    1. Exactly when did he ever have credibility?

I still remember sitting down with him around 2000 and patiently trying to explain the internet and web browsers to him. Over and over.

    2. @12:49pm I never said he ever had credibility nor did I say that he has lost credibility... I actually said the exact same thing that you did, which is that he has none :)

  9. Before KRON, Lawrence Karnow was at KPIX for 18 years. He is married to KPIX news reporter Sharon Chin...thank you Google! I always liked his reports. Wasn't their ads where he was the Great Karnow reporting the weather. I remember one morning during the news, Lawrence called out an on-air earthquake. No one else felt it, but he was spot on with the information. That was cool.

  10. - To say Somerville has inner demons is an understatement. Even Richmond's nastiest moments don't come close to this stress breakdown.
    - Again, Audacy is more like Audacity. Stupid ex-CBS CEO's disdain for radio (and his wife is still bringing undeserving ratings for talent-impaired Big Brother; talk about pedestrian tastes!)
    - Did Lockstep Larry say no Yom Kippur questions allowed?
    - I remember Karnow's years at KPIX (wife Sharon Chin, I believe, still works there, splitting Jefferson Award duties with Allen Martin, that RL non-fave at the anchor desk)
    - Wow! CNN should be spending that SF money at Atlanta HQ tidying up the building and cutting down on Don Lemon's malaprops (still can't believe Biden allowed Lemon to anchor a Town Hall; Lemon makes the occasionally gaffed President sound like Churchill)
    - When you are as Carpenters-friendly as KOIT (can't believe it's been 50 years since Karen & Richard's cover of Leon Russell's Superstar), you start the 24/7 Xmas broadcast ASAP.
    - The refusal to give a multi-Emmy winning reporter a raise? Age discrimination? Plus, even with Ashley & Finney there, that was not enough to offset Freedman's need to escape from Turd Tom, Trixie, Ming, Luuuzz, Liz Kreutz, and Donny. (BTW, talk about egg-in-the-face as far as Kreutz covering the rejected Recall goes. Somewhere at an SF diner, Matier and His Willieness had to be howling at Kreutz's opinions during the whole money-wasting reporting.)

  11. When Koufax pitched most stores weren't open on Sunday. Times were different then. Christian and Jewish traditions played a different role in society. Now the NBA has like five games on Christmas Day. What Koufax did 60 years ago to practice his faith is only interesting as a historical footnote and not something that the Giants manager needs to emulate or even comment on.

  12. Why Gabe Kapler working on Yom Kippur? Because it's not something he cares about. How do I know? Gabe Kapler was working on Yom Kippur.

  13. I wouldn't be surprised if one of Frank's demons is an early onset dementia. No, I'm not a doctor, and I don't play one on TV, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was compounding the rest of his tsuris. For the sake of him and his kids, I hope I'm wrong.

  14. Interesting about Somerville, that was my prediction and I'm just a occasional viewer, and could see the man is struggling. It is a train wreck.

  15. KGO has a rich history of age discrimination. Steve Davis (remember him?) sued them for it... and won.

  16. NBA players have their biggest TV audience on Christmas Day. Money wins. Practice your religious beliefs on your own time.

  17. People talk about how there’s no one at ktvu who’s ready to replace Frank right now. They DO have qualified male anchors but no one seems like a viable replacement because they treat everyone there as a third-string utility player. Right when you think someone is ready, you see them anchoring some off-the-wall show better suited for a 25 year old from Topeka.

    1. why does the anchor have to be male? Does having a penis make you somehow better at reading off of a teleprompter and pretending to be "concerned"?

    2. @9:22am - why does the anchor have to be female? Does having a vagina make you somehow better at reading off of a teleprompter and pretending to be "concerned"?

  18. Blame Frank himself ruining his family and his image flirting around with young woman who he should never ever mess with. I also blame his ex, if she wasn't the problem, he probably didn't need to adopt.

  20. Frank seemed fine with me when I watched all last week.

Julie, on the other hand, when she's there (infrequently anymore) seems like she'd rather sit next to Ted Bundy.

    1. My wife said the same thing about Julie. She looks very uncomfortable next to Frank now. You can see their relationship has taken a beating. It's also possible that she's checked-out which is a real possibility considering she's hardly ever there.
