Freaky Friday; KGO Radio Cal Basketball Pathetic Factoid; KCBS' Bunger Still Refuses to Give His Name; Quick Hits

IT IS BEYOND PREPOSTEROUS that when there's breaking news still, at a time when the nation just only a day earlier suffered one of the most darkest periods of our time and still yet, contemplating a president maybe removed and/or impeached (again),  KGO Radio is NOT broadcasting news about the goings-on; no, what is KGO broadcasting? CAL BASKETB ALL!

Stop laughing.

BEFORE I get the usual lectures and so-called experts reminding me that KGO is contractually obligated to carry Cal basketball, SAVE IT! I already know. I understand the basic tenets. I know about dollars and cents. I wish someone had more SENSE.

THIS IS A TRAVESTY! On Thursday night, the Capitol Mall attack was every bit as fresh and fluid as it was when the mob broke through and inside the US Congress; the fallout was still coming; several of us, including even GOP pols were asking for Pres. Trumps resignation and/or his removal from office. The practical chances of both of those options taking place still minimal, the NEWS domain was still #1 full of DC datelines--as it should be and will even today a few days after the attack.

YET...KGO RADIO, the NEWS-TALK station is carrying a Cal basketball game. How pathetic, how silly a TOTAL ABOMINATION!

Could KGO have switched the Cal game to KSFO? Of course it could have.

EXPLORE THIS: what would have happened had another significant terrorist attack taken place? Would KGO have dumped Cal basketball? One of these days KGO suits will have to answer that question.

QUICK HITS-

*Susan Slusser of the SF Chronicle switched beats; the A's beat writer for 23 years has now crossed the bay to become the new beat scribe for the SF Giants.

*Stan Bunger still refuses to give his name when signing on the air every 5: 30 AM on KCBS, Bunger's ego of assuming everyone knows his name has taken over his brain.

*K-101 had an Ambrosia moment the other day: repeated "You're Thee Biggest Part of Me" from 1980, Spring, but I was cool with it because 2021 is beginning to resemble 2020 and that's plain lousy.

*I've got Gavin Newsom fatigue, and you?

*Speaking of fatigue, how 'bout those lovely, pithy, "interviews" of Oak Mayor, Libby Schaaf, by insufferable KGO AM talk host, Nikki Medoro? Talk about softballs, Medoro should try out for the San Jose B's.

*I recently got a new IPhone and turned in my old cell, hey Jerimiah Crowe, I'll sell you that phone for 20 bucks so you can give it to Duane Kuiper.

I've got California politician fatigue, be it Gavin, Libby, London, Wiener, all of them.

  2. I don't have a problem w/what KGO radio did. These days, whenever a big breaker happens, I tune in to the TV...or get on the internet to see VIDEO on my laptop, iPad, or Samsung S-10

  3. Agree that it's profoundly tone deaf to air fucking basketball during the making of US history. Cant folks get the game on Cals website anyway? Absurd.
btw Thurston is on fire again today, around 1pm she blasted Paul Rodgers. Yesterday she hit really hard on Rothmann. Go Pat! Good radio in any case.

  4. I don't listen to medoro. Wouldn't waste my morning. I absolutely agree with you about the cal game. All I wanted was to hear John Rothman and he wasn't there. Who fking cares about sports at this time? Also, loved the picture of curry and his pal having so much fun.( Not) This is why people are so done with the whole quarantine going on.

  5. Once again on Friday at 1:54 PM, as she did on Thursday at the same exact time, Pat Thurston enthusiastically in her own words is promoting a product that makes claims that are absolutely provably false.
Calling the bogus product claims "REMARKABLE and HIGHLY IMPRESSIVE"
Sadly Pat, in her own voice, did a commercial for a product that is cheating KGO listeners, mostly seniors, out of $70 to $100 per month.
Imagine her outrage if some local company was cheating seniors.
The product she is shilling for is Balance of Nature, Fruits and Veggies. Pat says "6 capsules give you 10 servings of fruits and vegetables" (her exact words)/. That lie contradicts the facts that one gets when doing simple math with the facts on the bottle.
The bottle says the combined weight of the daily dose of 6 capsules weighs only 4.8 gram. Company ads say they get that by reducing the weight of fresh veggies by 85%.
Meaning the 4.8 grams is the 15% left over. If 15% is 4.8 grams it means they only started with 32 grams of fresh veggies and fruits combined. 32 grams is almost nothing. A single small apple weighs 100 grams. A serving of broccoli weighs 80 grams.
Balance of Nature's 6 daily capsules does NOT give you even ONE full serving of fruits and veggies.
Pat knows this, or should know this, but continues to promote this lie to her "family" of listeners, mostly vunerable seniors.
Essentially participating in a scam that is fleecing thousands and even millions of dollars from KGO listeners.
Keeping KGO on air is not a good enough reason to knowingly cheat elderly listeners out of their meager monthly retirement money during this Covid-19 crisis where they are susceptable to the fraudlent claims of making them safer.
It is dispicable conduct and Pat Thurston should make herself aware of the true facts.
The FDA slapped down the claims of Balance of Nature just last year, but now they are back with endless "testimonnials" all geared to fool seniors and others into buying their product with flat out false claims.
The hypocisy of Pat Thurston needs to be made public so the fleecing of KGO listners can be curtailed.
Cumulus may still run other ads for Balance of Nature but Pat Thurston does not need to lend her voice and endorsement to the process.
Pat Thurston does not excuse Donald Trump from passing on lies, so she should NOT participate in passing on the lies of Balance of Nature. Stop engaging in Trump-like behavior Pat...
    Where is your moral compass?
(Pat, don't make the same mistake you did with personally promoting Online Trading Academy, which the FTC, sued, shut down, and froze assets for false advertising)

  6. Sports heavily subsidizes those hosts you love like Pat Thurston. How else do you think a company that recently came out of bankruptcy could pay for the salaries of all those hosts and their large staff? Engineering, sales, programming, traffic, digital, and management. It’s the infomercials and sports. Radio ad sales are way way way down and the landscape has changed. There was no breaking news on Thursday and if there were, you have plenty of other options for news. Take a break from politics and go do something else for a few hours.

  7. Kediri is one of two reasons I no longer listen to KGO (the other being the smug and sanctimonious Chip Franklin). Medici is an intellectual short-ball hitter, while Franklin thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room. It’s so sad KGO, once the powerhouse of California radio, has commoditized itself and settled for mediocrity.

  8. To Anonymous at 2:33 PM... I see, the ads Pat personally does are funding KGO shows, like hers, to stay on the air.
So that makes it OK to fleece seniors out of their meager retirement funds that the ads are mostly directed towards.
Sure, the product daily dose (6 capsules totaling 4.8 grams) only gives the buyer 1 serving or less of fruits and veggies, but we've got to sell something to keep the station on the air.
So lets join together with the lying seller and "personally" voice their fraudulent claims of "more than 10 servings". Just tell the naive senior listerers that they'll get "more than 10 servings of fruits and veggies" when simple math proves that claim to be a lie.
We need to stay in business so it gives us the right to lie.
We think KGO is so important, that we can justify cheating our KGO family of listeners. Especially the elderly listeners whom make up the majority of those suckered into buying the product as they worry aobut their health regarding the virus.
Oh yeah, we need to stay in business, so we have a good excuse to promote absolutely false claims.
Sounds like Trump, needing to stay in office, so it gives him the right to make up lie after lie after lie.
Outrage about Trump's lies, but OK with KGO hosts personally passing on lies for a advertiser.
Look, I know Cumulus will not stop the advertisments, but honest hosts will not personally do the spots for fraudulent products.
Pat does not need to add in "Remarkable and Highly Impressive" on top of the false claims about buyers getting "over 10 servings" when they are in fact getting only one serving or less.
Morally this is not even a close call.
Stop personally cooporating in the fleecing of KGO listeners.

  10. Anyone in the industry will confirm that all sports contracts include language to pre-empt for serious breaking news and emergencies. If a national emergency were to occur, they would immediately switch to the network just like they did on Wednesday. They were running commercial free all day and Chip even filled the network spot breaks later in the day. Remember they preempted infomercials and brought in staff when Joe Biden clinched the election on a Saturday. This criticism is without merit.

    1. How often do you see KCBS going commercial free or airing government pressers for an entire hour? KGO loses money doing the right thing all the time even though they’re not pulling in the revenue of a #1 rated station. It’s not like KCBS couldn’t afford it. The all news station? Remember the covid-19 task force briefings and Newsom’s pressers? I flipped around the dial and KQED was the only other station carrying them. I think we can forgive occasional cal games when they’re losing revenue from broadcasting in the public interest when it counts.

  11. Rich, you were wrong when you began banging this drum long ago, and you're wrong now.

Stan's refusal to 'introduce' himself isn't about arrogance that everyone knows his name, but the opposite. He's an anchor reading a script. Irrelevant really what his name is.

Considering your rage at repetitive traffic reports, what a waste of airtime hearing a news reader say their name every 10 minutes.

  12. I don't have much sympathy for Gavin (et al) Fatigue ... You can switch stations and get a summary online from the Chron or BANG, usually within an hour.

And the basketball conflict also represent a failure on the part of the industry to develop the HD alternate channels. You don't have to buy another station to have two broadcasts. There would be some tough decisions about which broadcast goes to HD2, but the reason they are tough is the only time stations use that channel is to program their Christmas music.
