After Almost Two Years, Ted Robinson Still Soars Above Greg Papa

Ted Robinson (@tedjrobinson) | Twitter

I MISS TED ROBINSON

He was crisp and authentic; his play-by-lay was straight-forward, exciting when apparent --and negative but to the point when necessary. In other words, Robinson conveyed the scene and the results without any forced theatrics and phony excitement.

And yes, his TD call was as buoyant and captivating as ever. Just enough crispness and savoring when the situation merited.

Not to say Greg Papa is a dope. He isn't. But he lacks the moment. His call has been so often, whether in promos or in actuality, there's no excitement. It all sounds the same. Papa hasn't been in 49ers' land long enough to warrnt the crazy "SAN-FRANCISCOOOO!" scream. If you haven't built up a reservoir of authenticity with a team, how can your touchdown call elicit any real emotion. Papa's wildly over-the-top call isn't genuine because he hasn't built up any times with the 49ers. Therefore, his TD call is as exciting as a Turlock Arby's There's no there, there.

RICH LIEBERMAN 415 MEDIA: Why Greg Papa's 49ers' Touchdown Call Really, Truly, Sucks

  1. Have never heard Papa do the 49er games on radio - just watch the broadcast on TV. Unless you don't have a TV, who even listens to the radio broadcasts? Ratings must not be huge.

    1. Be Lucky that Chris Myers does most of the FOX PBP games the 49ers are in. Most Faithful are anyway, should they be like most NFL & MLB FOX viewers who want no part of Joe Buck.
Would be interesting to see who among RL readers think Buck is a lesser evil than Papa and vice versa.

Yo Rich, I hear that. I been to that Arby's and it was disgusting man. The roast beef sandwich was as cold and floppy as Jan Wahl!

    2. I love Arbys. A waitress named LaTishia gave me some colt 45 there one time!

  4. Don't care for either Papa or Robinson.
Besides, don't 98% of 49er fans watch the games on television?

    1. Yes... But only if they're winning.

    2. 11:52: When it isn't Myers on FOX, Michaels on NBC, Nantz or others on CBS, or Levy on ESPN/ABC calling 49er TV, assuming you don't care for either Papa or Robinson, do you prefer Buck over these two or would you tolerate one or the other more?

  5. In a strange way, I'm happy Ted is no longer on the call for the 49ers because you could tell he had to tow the company line for some pretty bad teams. Tim Ryan has no problem slinging the BS, but I always felt a little embarrassed for Ted that he was being reduced to being a parrot for Jed York - he's just always been above that. That said, the Niners definately feel a little less "classy" with Papa as their voice.

  6. Greg Papa as the 49er play by play announcer is FUBAR. He will always be associated with the Raiders. Ted Robinson has a national reputation was screwed by Jed Dork. Papa cannot carry Robinson’s jockstrap.

  7. I feel like one day you hate Papa. The next day you love him. Now you hate him again. Which is it bro?

  8. Ted Robinson is a class act and is sorely missed. Greg Papa, on the other hand, is a pompous smarmy phony shithead. Go back to calling Raiders games, asshole.

  9. All you clowns rooting for a team owned by the disgusting Yorks, do you enjoy punching yourself in the balls as well?

  10. Ah Teddy Ballgame! So versatile and accomplished, Baseball, Football, Tennis, Olympics, he did a great job sportscasting for just about any sport. I heard he once did play-by-play for a co-ed Japanese bucackie league back in the 1990's, is that true Rich?

  11. I always hoped and Rich had mentioned it that Ted Robinson had a possibilty of doing the play x play for the Warriors as the current play x play the one and only Pillsbury dough boy is just awful, but I thihk the Warriors feel sorry for intinials ( BF) with the sad passing of his wife a few years ago and also being fired at KBNR, this is nothing but a mercy hire.

  12. Bring back Lon Simmons. Even Don Klein. Papa is a poophead. Robinson is OK, but not as good as Lon or Don.

  13. Robinson is a better baseball announcer than football play by play. A very personable guy and that translates for baseball. Papa is better for football, more knowledgeable and can carry the set up of the defense and the offense and accurately transmit the emotion of the ensuing play. I always listen to Papa and Ryan and watch the game on TV. It is simply more enjoyable. The Warriors games are very enjoyable with Bob Fitzgerald. He keeps up with the fast paced action and shows a sense of humor.

  14. RIP, Simmons & Klein

The Catch III. Nuff said about Robinson's Niner legacy

It sounds more and more foolish when Papa shouts "San Francisco!" since the Niners are more and more the team of the Silicon Valley (sorry, Sharks fans still looking for the Cup). All of Santa Clara County felt like they were more a part of the NFL when Levi's Stadium saw their first and successful NFC Championship on January 19, 2020. Not convinced that San Franciscans feel the same way.

  15. Papa is a Raider. Ted is and always will be a 49ers. He will back in time. Papa and Tim are getting old.

  16. Didn't Robinson get a "better" job as a team ambassador or something?

    I can't stomach Papa.

  17. Ted is no saint, he took the job from Joe Starkey who had to make an excuse that he had to give up the 49ers. Although in reality, Joe was having a really difficult time calling a Cal game on a Saturday and then fly wherever the Niners were for a Sunday game
