The All-Sports FM, 'The Game' Launches 9,745th New Morning Show (Yawn) --I'll Listen When There's Nothing Left To Watch on CSPAN3

95.7 The Game (@957thegame) | Twitter

95.7 FM (All Sports) The Home of "Sports Retread Radio."

As I predicted here back in August, The Entercom Radio Company, is about to launch its 9,745th new schedule, including a new Morning Show (Yawn) with a bevy of play-it-safe hosts and hostesses; a lot of KNBR has-beens, really, which should tell you all you need to know about the 2020 iteration.

Yawn.

The bottom line is it will not work. It never does. The Game might as well be a PC-laden radio version of The View, with just enough Black, White, Gay, Man, Woman, Vanilla, Coffee futons -- the usual suspects only most couldn't move a needle if they were in the surgery room at SF General.

Have you seen the ratings?

I'm being honest which is why you come here. If you want rah-rah go read the industry rags and exult in the latest 95.7 FM PD saying "this is gonna be great."

Yeah, sure.

They've said that before, 9000 other times.

I'll give a listen when there's nothing left to watch on CSPAN3.

  2. Train wreck. I was told the guy who runs The Game runs ALL SPORTS PROGRAMMING for Entercom. Can you imagine?

  3. 6-10: Kate T. 10-2: Dan Dibley. 2-6: Brucey.

I'd rather give you the launch codes, than subject myself to that lineup. You know it's bad, when Ratto is the pleasant sounding one in the group.

  4. Smh. Scott and Ratto. Need more Ratto jokes from RL and readers. Oh, and Salisbury loves loudly hearing himself. A big, fat (pardon the pun) No to this station.

  6. Rich, I got to give you credit, you called this!

As far as the changes go, I'm happy that Bonta and Butcher Boy will be paired up for a weekday show, but it's kind of too bad they put them in the morning timeslot. I liked Bonta at middays, and I felt that would've been a better timeslot to move Butcher Boy. It will be interesting to hear how they do with Kate Scott, who will make her return to local sports talk radio. Like Kate Scott said earlier when Damon, Ratto, and Kolsky interviewed her, hopefully people give this new show a shot. Kate Scott has proved she can hold her own back in her KNBR days, and listening to Niners pre and postgame on 95.7, Bonta and Butcher Boy already have good chemistry. Them being paired up on the weekdays made sense and kind of needed to happen at some point.

I really thought this would be a good time for them to let Ratto go, but he still stays on for some reason. I will miss Butcher Boy on nights, but say what you want about Butcher Boy, but he is kind of too good to be stashed away at night.

Really unfortunate that Lorenzo Neal was let go, but apparently, according to Damon Bruce, Lorenzo Neal will be a football insider on all the shows, which might be a better role for him in the long term. Each show can have him on and they could breakdown the Niners matchup for that week or other top NFL matchups for the week.

Lorenzo Neal's love for LeBron on a Bay Area sports talk radio station probably might've done him in as well. It's still too bad he won't be one of the main weekday hosts anymore though.

I'm happy Guru stays on, but I'm not sure how Dibley will do paired up with Guru and Steinmetz. If they were going to do this new format, I would've kept Guru with Bonta on middays and added Butcher Boy there, and moved Matt Steinmetz to mornings with Kate Scott and Dan Dibley. I don't make those decisions, but we'll see how things go.

As far as nights, I have a feeling it will be a revolving door of co-hosts for Covay. Covay and Butcher Boy had a great thing, but in a way, you could tell the writing might've been on the wall as Butcher Boy kept filling in on other shows, and Covay and Butcher Boy didn't have that same consistently like they had last year. A commenter on here didn't like my opinion on this, but I would give the dream job contestents a shot at night to co-host with Covay. Yeah, they're not experienced, but that's how you gain experience. It might end up being John Dickinson and Whitey Gleason, but dream job contestants like Shomari Block and one of the other guys, deserve a shot as well at night.

But yes, Rich, you were right. You have a pulse on Bay Area media.

    3. Otis You should work at the Game why not they hired Covay and he sucks And contests winners on air are why that stations ratings suck so bad

    4. @2:51- haha. I wish I could get a job at The Game. I actually submitted a video to be a dream job contestant, but I wasn't selected. LOL. It's all good, even though it wasn't clear what they were really looking for in the video submission. Plus, you only had like 1 minute to do a video, which is obviously not a lot of time to make a point in a video, without really explaining your point. LOL.

Covay isn't bad. I listened to him this morning as he's filling in this week on what's left of the now old morning show and he's ok. I think him and Butcher Boy really worked because they are both high energy, and it was the type of show that works better at night. Now that Covay is going to be paired up with Dickinson, as I mentioned in an earlier post, Dickinson doesn't really have personality and Covay in a way, is a lot like Butcher Boy. Yeah, they might even themselves out, but we'll see how it goes.

I think it's cool The Game gives people a chance to get an on-air job. Look at what it's done for Guru, Butcher Boy, and guys like Zakariah in the past.

Regarding their ratings, I'll be honest, I was susprised by that. I thought 95.7 had a good thing going before this change, but we'll see if this weekday lineup change will help their ratings. I think when the Warriors come back and have their games aired on The Game, that should help get The Game higher ratings.

  7. Time for Entercom to sell the station on the cheap to the Zwerling family. Then offer Rich a show on it. Sze and friends would have a major cow!

  8. Kate Scott (fake last name) has a voice for phone sex.

  9. Poor John Dickinson what did he do to a program director in a past life to be saddled with Covay...

    1. Putting Steiny and Dickinson back together again would have a good pairing.

    2. @11:36- I agree. Steinmetz has a better rapport with Dickinson from their NBA this week show that they used to do on Saturdays. Also, Steinmetz doesn't yell at Dickinson like he does Guru and Bonta.

I'm not trying to say that Steinmetz is racist, but thinking about this, it makes you wonder why he always gives Guru and Bonta a hard time, but doesn't with a guy like Dickinson?

    3. @1:48- LOL... I think Dickinson is better in the utility player/fill-in role. Yeah, there's times when you listen to him and think he could be a good weekday host, but at the same time, there's times when you listen him and realize that him filling in on shows might be best. He does his HW and watches all the games, he's smart and has opinions that make sense, but at the same time, he's kind of dry and can be kind of boring. He has no personality.

Nothing against Dickinson and the guy is solid, but his strong suit might be filling in on all the shows. He has a good rapport with Covay, but can that show last like the Butcher Shop did? They don't even have a name for their show yet.

    4. Sh*t show would a perfect name for that pos Covay

  10. lets bring back "uncle towney" the best windbag on radio or mikey "i cant stop talking about being a drunk" urban..

  11. Bonta is horrible for radio. He has a congested nose. I dare you to listen to him say "gauntlet" without thinking he swallowed his tongue. He also disrupted the chemistry w Steinmetz and Guru---which is the best pairing in local radio when it's just the two of them.

Butcher is a better, fresher, local Damon, and everyone else totally sucks.

Cozimor is class. A show w him and Roxy would sound national level. Maybe sprinkle them throughout, but they have better things to do. And so do I. peace out.

  12. Lorenzo Neal is horrible, remember a year or two back around Valentine Day, he was doing these horrible seranades on the air, plus he speaks poorly with his pronounations of words. No need to do a parade for him, sure he has more $$ then all of the other talent put together. He had a TV job too for the Niners not sure if he is still doing that.

  13. Dan Dibley is overrated...he got that same “schtick” from Gary Radnich...

    1. Dibley is not very exciting but at least he follows today's sports while Radnich mailed it in, similar to Ralph the last couple of years with Tolbert Radnich could name the starting Yankee lineup from 1965, snooze who cares !! I never liked Radnich even when he replaced Nettles as the sports guy on TV, blow hole with look at me, I am so smart.
