Hi Rich-- A few years back, it appeared that a seismic shift was imminent: The end of two-person crews in favor of cheaper one-man-band/VJ's. But as I survey the Bay Area news scene today, it appears that only KRON has fully embraced this. Is the OMB/VJ concept now dead...or is it still in play in our nation's #6 market?
Thanks Ben for the positive words, all the other stations would like to go to the MML concept as you point out, KRON is doing so --KGO, KPIX, KTVU and NBC Bay Area--all O and O's and all still union stations still do traditional 2 (reporter/camera) crews --only a matter of time they do VJ, for one, it's cheaper and that rules the day. Comimng soon one way or another.
Outside of the obvious (the female morning news anchor shacked up with the yelling man), are there any interesting stories or tidbits of local female (or male) media members that worked their way up the ladder by "cozying" up to people in positions of power?
Is Greg Papa out of his cotton picking mind? I'm currently listening to KNBR while he drones on and on in his attempt to "lecture" us about race in America. Tell me one time that old white boy from Buffalo has ever had to deal with racism? So frustrating.
Why do pretty much all KTVU work-at-home reporters have plants, and particularly orchids in the background? Is owning orchids (or, in Jesse Gary's case, fake yellow roses) an employment requirement, or does a florist provide them for everyone's house? (Doubtful, considering how cheap KTVU is.)
KTVU also seems to employ a lot of reporters/anchors who are, shall we say, meterosexuals.
A couple of comments here. I think it's time for the anchors to return to the studio, albeit at a safe distance. It seems to work for KRON. I'm tired of audio not in sync with the lip movements. KTVU is the worst by far.
Also, why do some field reporters wear masks when reporting from the "middle of nowhere?" Completely unnecessary.
Last question first, so they can look cool --as if they're being informed citizens. It's cool but it's total PC and BS. First question I agree with you and hope it happens because it can be done --and safely so as you describe but for now, it's still station policy.
Fred from Union City here: This is a media question for obvious reasons -- What's your take on the NFL season starting on time? Thanks in advance and keep on keeping on.
I think they'll get it (season) started on time but I wouldn't bet on them getting the full season in and I would doubt you have a normal season. Not just pandemic wise (duh) but a country with all sorts of stuff (guess) taking place and not appearing to be end all.
Hey Rich , Raymond from Hollister here ...why the disdain for the HOFamer Ronn Owens ? the finest talk show host in his hey day , I believe the only host to better or best Limbaugh ratings wise .
rich, do you think lee hammer will ever give in to john rothmann's demands to let him do a six hour show? tounge in cheek slightly, but it seems rothmann has the run of the station
I wouldn't mind seeing a "Where Are They Now" types of stories; how are they doing; what factors caused them to leave; what advice might they have. Feel free to name some names: Sandy Castelblanco; Natasha Zouves; Terilyn Joe; Christina Nubla; Sydnie Kohara; Elaine Corral; Emerald Yeh; Ross McGowan; for some reason I could think of many female names, more than male names.
Put more into it than retired and alive in Marin. Maybe they'll even give a good interview with no hostilities and not be adversarial I understand several are still local and moved into Public Information roles within various companies/agencies. Others could be anywhere or even deceased. Just a thought.
Hi Rich--

DeleteHey Rich—
ReplyDeleteClaudine Wong comes across as a real diva that loves to hog all the air time. Not my favorite. Thoughts?
Darrin in Rohnert Park
I can't watch her anymore because she's just plain dull. Other than that, she's fine.
DeleteAgreed. DULL.
DeleteOutside of the obvious (the female morning news anchor shacked up with the yelling man), are there any interesting stories or tidbits of local female (or male) media members that worked their way up the ladder by "cozying" up to people in positions of power?
ReplyDeleteCozying in a between the sheets type way that is.
Is Greg Papa out of his cotton picking mind? I'm currently listening to KNBR while he drones on and on in his attempt to "lecture" us about race in America. Tell me one time that old white boy from Buffalo has ever had to deal with racism? So frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI'm starring to get sick of all his (Papa) doom and gloom. It used to have meaning, now it's become tedious at best.

It used to be a black and blue station now it's a green station. (wink)
DeleteMaybe plants can save the KRON 4 news studio.

DeleteFor some.
Yo Rich,
ReplyDeleteMelania Trump or Jill Biden ?
Jill Biden Be Best.
I was thinking more of how I could go on a date with Nia Malika Henderson, actually.
DeleteAre there any local female African Americans on the news that have not been subjected to your lustful fantasy’s?
ReplyDeleteAre you writing a book?
DeleteHave a nice day.
Hi Rich,
ReplyDeleteDo you have any idea what happened to Rebecca Corral? I haven't heard her on KCBS lately.
East Bay
She is dealing with a medical issue that is chronic but not serious but serious enough that she is absent from her 10-2 PM gig.
DeleteThanks for the update Rich. I hope Rebecca a speedy recovery.
