Cumulus SF Headquarters Likely Goner Once Coronavirus Pandemic Subsides; Expensive 415 Real Estate; 'Home Studio' Likely New Normal

750 Battery St, San Francisco, CA, 94111 - Office Space For Lease ...
The SF Cumulus broadcast building at Broadway and Battery

CUMULUS HAS A PRETTY NICE SF BUILDING (pictured) --its pulse beats at Broadway and Battery in the heart of North Beach-- prime San Francisco real estate and it pays dearly for that property: try about $100K a month!

As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to be in crisis mode, Cumulus, like everyone else, has had its local broadcasters report from home. And that figures to be the model for the immediate future and beyond. Which will make it consider the present formula to be a new routine long-term, saving the company millions of dollars and liabilities not to mention property taxes. And that's just the start.

Even in turbulent times like this, SF real estate is hugely expensive. Cumulus (and other corporations) are lean-minded to begin with and this is the perfect opportunity to save money. LOTS of money.

So eventually, get used to that sometimes choppy sound you hear on KNBR, KGO, KSFO, The Bone, etc because there's a new sheriff in town and he doesn't love expensive real estate.

Makes sense.

  1. Funny you would say this. I was just thinking a lot of programming may be done from home after this whole thing is over. Certain shows are carrying on with little change in quality and probably a huge change in production costs, so why not?

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if their HOA's stepped in and said you can't run a business out of your home, stop it.

  3. Cumulus can afford $100G a month!!! If it's $100k a month, then that's a different matter

  4. Considering the fact that there are very few local shows left, I am not sure this really makes a difference. Just look at KSFO. With Brian Sussman now gone, does 560AM have any local shows?

  5. It’s crazy to think a pandemic would bring cumulus back into the black? I know it’s far fetched but damn maybe having all the hosts broadcast from home back in the day to save $$$ would have prevented the infamous massacre at KGO and gadget mannnnnnnn would not be the disgrace he is today....

  6. If it were ONLY the SF Cluster that was in trouble...There would be no problem...But the whole company is in Bad Shape. They are most likely going to bankrupt again this year.
