A WASTE OF MONEY? YOU BETCHA!
KCBS decided to reward, I guess, its political reporter, Doug Doug Sovern; the station doled out, get this, $25Grand to send Sovern to Las Vegas to cover the Saturday Nevada Caucus--the expenses included broadcast costs, hotel, travel expenses, etc. Sovern definitely the jackpot in what essentially amounted to a political junket.
And what did Bay Area listeners gain? Any insight, any newfound info we didn't already get by listening to CBS network coverage? Nada, nothing. NOT A THING! What a joke.
Even more ridiculous? Sovern spent the better part of the weekend, (including today, Sunday) "reporting" routine political minutiae--that Bernie Sanders won a decisive Democratic vote and that Nevada voters overwhelmingly caucused his win and probably nomination (at this point) but Sovern had nothing else. Nothing we didn't already know but hey, it's Sovern in Vegas! Let's celebrate.Making matters even more embarrassing for KCBS: you would think his multiple reports include an analysis on the scene but Nooooooo. None other than Larryb Gerston, a political analyst for KCBS, did a phono from his house, here in the Bay Area, this morning, talking about the Nevada Caucuses. HUH? I thought that's why Sovern was there in Las Vegas, what the hell is going on? Maybe KCBS didn't want to ruin Doug's room service; perhaps Sovern needed to play poker at the Bellagio --talk about WASTE of money.
*I'm amazed that KGO would place Nikki Medoro in a new, drivetime show next Monday morning --I'm not dissing Medoro just that she's not a morning drive personality. I would have given that to Chip Franklin and let Medoro continue her news updates and sidekick shtick to Franklin.
Franklin used to do a drivetime show in San Diego and his style is more suited for a morning drive style. Medoro has improved to very well listenable and although the show can be moribund from time to time, the 3-6PM program can also be very funny and entertaining. Franklin has won me over with his humor and remarks; frankly, the rapid fire of this topic/that topic was sort of a disaster but the pacing has improved and I like Franklin and his banter with Nikkie, it ain't great but what the hell is anymore?
You didn't mention the other option, show both Chip and Nikki the door and play infomercials in their slots...number of listeners would remain more or less the same.

ReplyDeleteI like KGO but it's a sinking ship, their ratings are bottoming out and Medoro won't be able to do much. Armstrong and Getty were smart to leave before the station completely changes format to a foreign language station.
ReplyDeleteArmstrong and Getty did not leave they were asked to move to KSFO, a sister station also owned by Cumulus. Seems like it when it became apparent Brian Sussman was not coming back management decided to A&G over there, since their line up is more conservative, and then give Niki Medoro a morning show. Rich thinks she won't move the needle, he might be right, but let's give her a chance. Many like her on Chips show, and Rich might be right Chip would have done better on a morning show and Niki on the afternoon, we'll see.

Maybe if Kyla is really,really,bored and reads this she can clear up this mystery with the facts.
DeleteI was on to something when I wrote 2 or 3 weeks ago Chris Matthews was getting a bit senile when he compared Sanders to Fidel- no last name needed.

Chris Mathew's "take from the 99% and give to the 1% b/c that's what's good for you" rhetoric has become so common & bizarre -- & given we all know what's happened to the USA over the past 20 years -- now, in 2020, Mathew's opinion is irrelevant.

DeleteHe's..got something deeply conservative going even as 99% of him sounds Democratic. He once praised Trump for blocking Muslims. "I'm glad we have a strong president for a change" That first Trump week in office)..and then of course he later decided that Trump was all lies and the like.
I tuned to KCBS radio Saturday at 10 pm to get the Nevada vote tallies. All they said: Sanders was predicted to win. Well I already knew that! I wanted to know the current vote tallies. NADA word from KCBS. Neither the local news segment nor the national CBS radio segment. Puzzled, I tuned in again at 11 pm. Still, NADA word from KCBS either local or CBS network national on the vote count numeric result. hmmm .... Sort of makes a person think the folks at KCBS radio didn't want us to know that Sanders had won with nearly 50% of the vote.
