Randy Hahn: San Jose Sharks PBP TV Broadcaster; The Bay Area's Best; Monday Quick Start

Randy Hahn

THIS IS WHY I LIKE RANDY HAHN --the complete TV play-by-play broadcaster for the San Jose Sharks.

Hahn is an exceptional announcer. He is enthusiastic and shows emotion when the Sharks score a goal. But it's a measured description and Hahn makes sure it's the right moment. More importantly, when there's a goal by the opposing team, Hahn gives a reasonable response. He's no homer.

In an environment where the home announcer goes slightly berserk and downright crazy-- whether its football, basketball, baseball, hockey, college or pro, Hahn is the ultimate professional. And that still counts today for some.

I don't want to come off as too wooden --I love excitement and raw emotion. It's a basic human ingredient. But there's a time and a place. Especially when it comes to broadcast TV/radio play-by-play.

Hahn is the master. The Bay Area is lucky to have him. He's my favorite play-by-play broadcaster. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in that statement.

  2. Between him and Dan Rusanowksy on radio, the Sharks quietly have the best two PBP guys in Bay Area sports. A pity this isn't really a hockey town. :-(

    1. Attendance, and enthusiasm levels, at The Tank have pretty impressive over the years. Especially for a place that is supposedly not in a Hockey Town.

  4. Agreed...Randy Hahn is excellent. A breath of fresh air when compared with the insufferable Greg Papa. Wish all our play-by-play announcers could aspire to be like this.

  5. I admit, Rich, I was disappointed that Chuck Barney wrote a puff piece on the opposite of Hahn in Papa.
What is so impressive about Hahn's on-air success is that off-air, it has been anything but. It is amazing how Hahn keeps his laser focus on-air when he has trouble taking care of himself off-air.

  6. Agree, but don't sleep on Dan R.; superb at describing the action, funny, droll, doesn't make it about him. He's everything Papa isn't.

  7. It is too bad more people don't pay attention to Hockey. It's a great fast paced physical game with very few commercials, The players are some of the best people in sports. The fans know the game and respect it and the pbp people like Hahn and Rusinowski along with Jamie Baker and Brett Hedican are the best at their craft. With this group you don't hear the tired cliches that so many on air personalities bring to the table. I am always amazed at how well they can keep up with who is on the ice since the players are changing constantly usually without a break in the action. They also call the game from up in the rafters and they don't miss a thing. Amazing talent. Plus Hahn is married to Roberta Gonzales so I'm sure his personal life is crazy.

  8. Ken Korach, man! Ken and Bill King were an hall-of-fame tandem. It took me a while to warm up to Vince, but they're a good pair, too. (Admittedly I haven't heard Hahn, don't get the channel.)
