A LOT OF YOU HAVE ASKED LATELY: When he's on, she seems to be off...and vice-versa--what's the deal?Frank Somerville and Julie Haener ; mainstays at KTVU and part of the franchise "10 o'clock News".
Only for the last several weeks both have been missing on the news desk--well, sort of --as I observed, when Somerville is anchoring, Haener is gone and when Haener is reading the news, Frank is gone. It wouldn't be such a big deal if it were occurring for a few days but weeks? Not a coincidence. It never is.
Is there friction going on? A feud? Are we seeing the Fox/KTVU future blueprint of the 10 PM News in its more leaner, less star-powered post 2010's iteration? No doubt, there's a growing friction on the set as reality sets in and everyone knows there's change taking place in the coming years, Fox mandated.
Somerville and Haener are both professionals if a bit jaded these days. KTVU still leads the pack and is still Fox's Bay Area cash cow. If there's something going on (and I'd bet there is, maybe trivial, maybe bigger, maybe a lot bigger) than even the slightest notice from viewers could be cause for concern. We'll see and hear. Which is why you come to me.

ReplyDeleteI'm thinking both of them have earned or negotiated a good amount of vacation time. Regarding Haener, she's just sent the younger son off to college in TX; and now she's in the UK (again) on a "girls" trip.

ReplyDeleteIf you were on it, you would have also noticed that Candice Nguyen has been gone for several weeks and is joining KNTV. She prematurely announced she was leaving in a now-deleted tweet. It was so bad that there wasn't even a station-wide email announcing her departure.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there's anything to really say about Frank and Julie other than that they're both just checked out and phoning it in. They both hate working Sundays, which is why you rarely see them together then.
Boom. True all true. Completely missed. Every time a contract is up lately, they leave. Your sources aren't very on it Rich.
DeleteAnother Amber Eikel mishandling. This news director is beyond clueless. Eikel is systematically sinking the ship over here one contract negotiation blunder after another. That's the real story.
DeleteNever even noticed Nguyen was gone...That's how much impact she has. Another generic face of "diversity" in the Bay Area, where such faces are in fact common as a homeless person peeing in Lake Merritt.
DeleteI don't blame Haener one bit for taking time as much time off as possible to be away from that boorish Somerville.

After Ibanez finishes his 49ers work - which may not end by Sunday, and could go another two weeks, maybe two or three days afterwards - all four lead personalities on KTVU plus a majority of the staff will be receiving major wake up calls courtesy of The Firm, including the other H anchor. Life won't be the same for all except for the lawyer-self-strong Tom Vacar, who knows how to resist the biggies.

ReplyDeleteYou managed to find a photo where Julie is nicely dressed. (My favorite outfit of hers is the black one with what looks like solar panels on the front, but oh, there are so many... Where the hell does she shop?)
