I'VE TOLD THIS STORY BUT NOT ENOUGH TIMES
ON THE DAY AFTER the first KGO Radio massacre back in 2011, Ronn Owens devoted 15 minutes to reaction from the night previous when a dozen or so of his fallen comrades were fired mercifully by Cumulus and shown the door...Owens said the new format would be great, acted like a drunk teenage, school-girl cheerleader, and shifted gears and talked about "gadgets." After almost eight years, still unbelievable ...
A FEW days later on a Saturday Morning, Pat Thurston, devoted her entire three-hour show to callers who were invited to phone in, vent, commiserate, mostly just get a lot off their chest; a chance to have some cathartic time to react to that had taken place only days earlier.
It was the right thing to do and Thurston did the right thing under the most riskiest of circumstances. She didn't have to do this. She could have mentioned the massacre and moved on because that would have been the safe way to deal with all this. Instead, Thurston acted like the pro she is and was and almost risked her career. Don't think Cumulus was pleased by it all but they backed off as they should have.
Classy move by Pat Thurston who received universal recognition, quietly, by local industry people.

Pat Thurston: CLASS
Ronn Owens: ASS
Ronnnn...a self-described "gadget guy" who doesn't know even the most remedial things about technology of any kind. He should probably put on a helmet before picking up a cell phone.
ReplyDeleteThis and the responses from Rich's previous post cracked me up for the whole day. The snideness was priceless.
ReplyDeleteRonnnnnn is a reflection of today's tech driven/influenced society. It's all about me. What's in it for me? How does it benefit me? If something happens to someone else, then collateral damage. It's just all about me. Fuck him, the asshole.
ReplyDeleteRonn and Brian: Dog Shit of the highest order.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of Ronn Owens friends.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the status of Brian Copeland's lawsuit against Cumulus Media ?
Anyone know ?
I've heard he has a pretty good chance to previal.
You must have heard that from someone who got their law degree at McDonald's University.
Deletegee, it was certainly the right thing for Pat to do, acknowledging the confusion and dismay of the listeners. I did the show mmediately after the bloodbath and did three hours of listener comments. The audience did not want to talk about anything else.
ReplyDeleteWish you were still on KGO once in awhile, you always brought a different approach. It's great that Pat and John is back on. John was always my favorite along with Gene Burns. I like Pat, but at times she is a little too predictable, and sound like she is repeating Democrats talking points. I consider myself liberal, but I like to listen to other viewpoints as well. What I like about your show was you were not predictable. I liked Ronn as well, won't comment on his reaction to bloodbath, I think it is time to put that subject to rest, it was many years ago, and the world has moved on, as has KGO and after some rough years, it has for the most part good to great hosts, worth listening to, and some decent fill in hosts as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the supportive words, 10:57. Working at KGO in the Mickey era was tremendous fun. Gene Burns and Duane Garrett were my favorites. There was a "there" there, then. I have always been, and remain to this day, a KQED listener, primarily. IF you make a donation, you can get the pledge-free stream. I spent the last three years on our documentary, "Everyone Counts", which just had a sold out premiere and which will show again this upcoming weekend.See youtube, search Everyone Counts Auburn documentary for the trailer. It's about ten suspicious deaths in the foothills. There is life after radio, and creative outlets even for geezers like me.
DeleteYeah, Rich ... you've mentioned it enough times. It's been almost 8 years.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have missed Ron, and he was the one they kept. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteMaybe a little overstated on both counts. Ronn definitely acted the "company man" in that situation; but then again both he & Pat presumably WERE accepting paychecks from that company. I remain a listener to Pat's show from time to time, but I was turned off by a recent interview she did with Congressman Ro Khanna. She refused to allow listeners to chime in with their comments and questions for Mr Khanna. IMO if a politician wishes to appear on her show, that should be conditioned on their willingness to address call-ins. The proper talk-show rule is simple as pie: No accepting listener calls, no radio program appearances. As I recall during his years of service at KGO Ronn pretty much always encouraged listener call-ins, whoever he interviewed, politicians and other guests. That was a major part of his show's appeal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you about the blog about Ronn and Pat is a little overstated, but then Rich tend to do that whenever he writes about Ronn, he wants to make sure his readers knows how much he dislikes Ronn.
DeletePerhaps Pat only had so much time with the congress man and she wanted that time to ask the questions she wanted answers to. She usually takes calls and is good at engaging the listeners. I wouldn't judge her on just that one show. She covers lots of subjects, and more local subjects, now that she is on 5 days a week. For the most part I like her show. John Rothmann is my favorite he is a little more balanced and great at engaging the callers, especially the ones who disagree with him.
