Kelli Johnsom |
*When both she and Papa (Ray Ratto too) were a part of the mercifully awful, "Happy Hour" show on NBCSBA, Papa multiple times talked over her, didn't look at her, and consistently lampooned her appearance, as if she weren't there.
Johnson tried to play diplomatic and stay professional but this display of BS by the Buffalo boar was too much for her to stomach and she complained to the big suits. They told Papa to knock it off. He relented. Sort of.
*His ego spans several continents and when she (Johnson) suggested more give and take on HH, he shrugged. The show (since cancelled) went bottoms-down in the ratings and was a historic failure on all fronts; Johnson, who isn't afraid to conjure up passionate debate for a program's sake, tried mightily to install genuine debate and emotion. She'd worked and held court in Washington DC and knew how to mix it up. Papa wasn't thrilled with that notion and decided to act benign. She really knew then and there he was an A-Grade asshole.
*Cardinal rule in broadcasting: never make your talent look bad --TV, radio, podcast, whatever. She tried to play ball. It's what professionals do. Papa obviously didn't get the memo.
*On mostly all accounts, nobody denies Papa is, mechanically speaking, an above-average PBP broadcaster --football, basketball, especially. On the other hand, he's also a 100% male diva of the 100th degree and has settled into a eternal boob dedicated to his own egotistical pleasure and making things dreadful for others.
Safe to say, don't invite Kelli Johnson to din-din if Papa is around.

Greg KaKa must be related to Fecescula Copeland.
ReplyDeleteWho cares!!! so what he's an asshole!!
ReplyDeleteCan't stand the overly emotive, contrived stylings of Papa.
ReplyDeleteKelli Johnson is really good; knows her sports and comes across as genuine.
Not going to lie, Kelli Johnson looks nice in that Giants hat. LOL.
ReplyDeleteTowards the end of the tenure of the Happy Hour show, you could tell there was chemistry issues between Greg Papa and Kelli Johnson, mainly what Rich stated.
It was weird too because earlier on in the show, Greg Papa liked Kelli Johnson. I remember Rich used to post articles about how he liked her a lot. Not sure where things went sour between the two.
Wasn't a big Johnson fan when she first started in this market. After watching her for a while, I have greater appreciation for her work. She seems quite dedicated.
ReplyDeleteHas GP brought his supremely irritating TD call to niners broadcasts? If so, I can just see it now: Niners fans immediately reaching for the mute button the minute Niner crosses the goal line.
ReplyDeleteApparently he has (per a friend), making Niner broadcasts as bad as the Raiders ones used to be. (though Musburger hasn't made it better)
DeleteLove to see Kelli take over the Giants dugout next season, perhaps as part of the post-Boch NBCSBA staff. Wishful thinking, of course. (Emmy for inaneness? Emmy?)
ReplyDeleteI agree. Johnson is a pro, and Papa is a tiresome POS. No one should be allowed to remain alive and be that much of an asshole.
