  1. Is it a good policy for a certain KGO host (3-6) to openly rip the hosts of the morning show on the same channel?

  3. Sounds like Lee Hammer is making Mark Thompson to go "wall to wall" on Trump today, your thoughts?

    1. Well, it is in the news, better than tales from "MY African Safari."

  4. If Jim Gabbert buys KGO, would he try to bring it somewhat back to the old format?

  5. How come KRON4 always post yesterdays closing stock Index amounts on the DAY AFTER it occurred? At least on KTVU, Pam Cook always discusses and post the current stock index figures?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Because KRON is so yesterday --literally and figuratively.

  6. Why did Pat Thurston’s producer resign from KGO?

    1. Probably for another job that pays more money; on the inside there's a lot to say about that move that I can't talk about just yet.

  7. When will Cumulus finally decide they need the revenue more than the physical station and put KGO up for sale? Also, any insight as to any potential buyer(s)?

    ReplyDelete

    1. KGO already IS for sale, wanna buy it? If the money is right (or even if it isn't) you may be an owner.

      Potential buyer: Jim Gabbert has the dough --he's probably the only one who would pull off such a thing but Gabbert either is too cheap or simply not interested.

    2. John Rothmann is a big bucks heir, as well. He should buy it!

      Delete
    3. Yeah, with emphasis on "should" but that will never happen.

    4. KGO should make a serious run as an all sports station.
      The first order of business would be to lock up the A's.
      Next I would get rid of Ronn Owens and ship him to KQED-FM.
      I doubt a spanish language format would work as is being rumored.

  9. Hi Rich: Regarding KTVU Channel 2. First the positives: KTVU has beefed up their GA Reporting staff by recently re-hiring Greg Liggins who was a Channel 2 weekend anchor/reporter back in the late 1990's early 2000's along with newbies Alison Rodriguez & Greg Lee BTW Frank introduced Lee yesterday on the 5 pm newscast as our "new political reporter." So far all 3 are solid additions especially Liggins who replaced Rob Malcolm. Now the Negative: What's up with Ditzy Deer in the Headlights Looking South Bay evening GA reporter Azenith Smith? Specifically Tuesday on the 10 pm newscast Smith totally bombed live on air attempting to ad-lib a report on Mountain View City Hall's decision to ban old RV's from parking overnight on city streets. While attempting to coherently talk while confidently looking straight ahead into the camera instead Smith's eyes were embarrassingly darting up & down into her I-Phone. She had an absolute Brain Fart live on air talking & making no coherent sense whats so ever! God's honest truth Rich--it was BAD! So Bad that Azenith Smith who normally works Sunday thru Thursday night on the South Bay beat was noticeably absent last night on both KTVU's 10 pm & 11 pm newscasts. Rich: What is your opinion on shaky Azenith Smith? I absolutely love your blog Regards, Cary SF

    1. I've never got Azenith Smith from day one but she fits all the check marks you need as a reporter these days so here comes KTVU.

  10. Betty Yu.. why does she get all the glamour reporting jobs.. award shows, opening events Etc. She's not that great.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We agree. But Yu has something going for her and I'm not suggesting it's all work-related. Not at all (wink)

      Delete
    2. I've wondered how/why re: B. Yu also. I suspect/speculate:
      -she's got the credentials in broadcast/journalism including a Master's degree;
      -she looks very good in fashionable clothing whether she's made connections either for loaner clothes or independently wealthy enough to afford to buy such clothing (including much travel) is unknown;
      -she may have been at the right place & time to land the event/entertainment/travel assignment with no reason for KPIX to replace her;
      -she does ok on general assignment reporting (maybe there are better folks out there) which means she can also handle routine reporting too when there aren't any special assignments to go to that day;

      Again, it's just speculation and I've no idea of her personal background, connection, friends, salary, career interests/desires. If a person likes what she's doing; is good at it; is having fun; do it while you can. Keep up the good work Ms. Yu.:)

    3. It's Betty's Botox/intertube lips. Never seen a Chinese woman with such huge ugly lips. I guess they're good for something.

      Delete
    4. I call them "bimbo" jobs; some too irrelevant & frivolous. I think because she can't do serious or sad reports with that smirk on her face. Seriously, I used to wonder if she had work done, but I don't really care. It's annoying.

      Delete
    5. Either rich parents or a sugar daddy. You dont need a masters degree to stand on the red carpet. i imagine several other KPIX GA reporters would love that gig.

      Delete
    6. At least Betty Yu has both elegance and intelligence, a combo which is completely lacking in the SF local TV market. She is also VERY easy on the eyes IMO. Her lips are sexy. Not shocked that Betty is on the red carpet considering the pool of frumpy female Bay Area reporters out there. With all the changes at KPIX, at least it has something going for it.

    3. I was stuck in a place where Channel 7 was playing all day Monday and on the noon news show this Ms. Aaron had this look on her face at the ed of the show towards whomever the Asian co-host was. It was NOT a friendly look. I was wondering who this lady was and trust me there was some REAL shade going on Monday at noon.

  12. The end of the baseball season is near. What's gonna happen to Jon Miller?

    1. Just a hunch but I think Miller can't be a #2 and that even if he were cool with it, they won't pay him what he wants which is #1 money.

  13. Are two Giants broadcasters going "on assignment" for life next year? Or just one? Or none?

    ReplyDelete
  14. How many more years does KPIX'S VDLC have left on her contract?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Rich .... thanks for taking reader questions ... mine concerns those of us who view free over the air broadcast tv. Most of the channels -- besides the actually programming -- provide information about the program currently on, and about the next program. You press a button on the remote to see it. For example at 6:30-7:00 pm 5.1's program information will show the "CBS Evening News", followed by "KPIX News" from 7 - 7:30 pm. Presumably this information is added by the station to entice viewers to watch their programming.

    My question is why do some of the bigger stations not provide this information? Examples are: Channel 9.1, 9.2, 20.1, & 20.2.

    You'd think that since they stations incur considerable expense to put their programming on the air, common sense says someone is assigned to provide program information.

    How can the management of these broadcast-tv companies justify not providing the program information?

    1. A lot of stations just don't care that much about their over-the-air audience. Most people watch via pay TV (cable/streaming/satellite). Most of the OTA audience doesn't even know or bother with the guide information available to them, it's availability will depend on the extent to which the manufacturer of their TV builds in features to make it available.

      Delete
    2. 10:27 has it spot on. Local management and Network HQs really don't care at all about local over-the-air audiences. Hence, the dearth that goes on within most of the Bay Area. It is all about picking and choosing from each station.

      Delete
    3. Waiminute... You get 20.1 & 2.2 OTA? I haven't had it in over a year. I thought it was only available on cable or migrated over to Channel 28. Still can't get it. I like the old shows that come on the .2 channel OTA.

      Delete
    4. 1:57 pm ... Yes, OTA channels 20.1 and 20.2 are still over the air broadcast, plus 20.3 and 20.4 I think. The old shows you are referring to must be those on "ME TV", Hogan's Heroes and the like. ME TV used to be on 20.2. There must have been some dispute between ME TV and channel 20 management, probably about how much channel 20 should pay to broadcast ME TV programming. Just speculating, don't know for sure. Anyway ME TV left channel 20.2, and there was no ME TV for a while; but eventually it came back to the Bay Area OTA on channel 44.3. It's also on another sub-channel in the 60's, forget exactly which one. I'll watch it there if channel 44.3 is having technical difficulties.

      Delete
    5. re 10:27 "most people watch pay TV"

      True, no dispute, but according to Nelson rating service (dated 1.2019) 16M homes nationwide now watch tv using the free OTA service. No idea how that translates to the Bay Area, but 16 M nationwide isn't exactly small potatoes.

  16. You've hammered Da Lin, yet his diction is so much better than Dennis O’Donnell who sounds like he will spit out a denture, or speaking around the removal of several teeth. There are speech coaches who can deal with the speech impediment, or he can get a new dentist.

    1. Dennis is White and poor Da, is stale off the boat!!

    2. Da Lin is a cool cat and a pretty thorough reporter and if I'm not mistaken, grew up in Oakland and went to Oakland High... where's this " off the boat" stuff coming from?

    3. At least O'Donnell looks at the camera when he's on the air.

  17. Is John Batchelor a paid agent of Vladimir Putin? 4 hours a night from him on KGO is a bit much.

    Oh, and Leo LaPorte's syndicated tech show on KGO on Sunday nights is the best tech show around and he's been doing it for decades, remember him when he worked with Peter B Collins.
