Will Ronn Owens Bitch about the Weekend Airport Protesters? KGO Radio Runs Cal Basketball Game, Taped Financial Shows, While World Demonstrates; KCBS' Lettieri and Bristow Score Big Time on SFO Scene; Monday 415 Media Opener

Image result for Ronn Owens Will Ronn Owens have been so inconvenienced over the protests of President Trump's Travel Ban that he will kvetch on KGO Radio this (Monday) morning?

My unscientific bet: Owens will predictably spend the hour criticizing the protesters: "Why all the fuss?" "Get over it, he's the 'president!" "Hey, Trump's trying to protect us!"

Then Ronn will take his four or five calls from every 50  year-old housewife from Pleasanton.

Owens has a few guests scheduled but I'm sure he'll deliver.

How Ronnnnnnn.

*At least KGO will be live and local Monday because on a day (Sunday) when major news dictated major coverage from local outlets, KGO was running its usual taped orgy --financial shows and a Cal basketball game.

Yes, KGO has a contractual obligation with its sports partners but very easily could have moved the Cal game over to sister station, KSFO, (which was running an old Rush Limbaugh show) and brought in John Rothmann to discuss the on-going developments around the world and at SFO, those nasty protesters that makes Ronn so angry.

Image result for Airport protestsThat would have been too easy and requiring a real PD --someone who has a command of possible news events and is responsible for day-to-day operations --clearly, Mike Anthony is not that guy and I've said as much.

Anthony's silly, out-of-touch dictum that KGO hosts have to change topics every 10-15 minutes was never so foolish given the events of the weekend when, literally, the entire world was focused on the travel ban, including what was taking place at SFO --if you don't register the passion and angst that people were feeling and living, then check out Rothmann's Facebook commenters from listeners who were happy to have a place to vent.

KGO, again, asleep at the wheel.

*Not the case for KCBS and reporter, Scott Lettieri, and anchor, Jon Bristow--Lattieri was at SFO the moment the protests broke out on Saturday and provided valuable updates as the weekend progressed.

Bristow anchored the weekend and had some terrific interviews on the KCBS news line throughout the weekend. It's nice to have real, interesting and legitimate coverage. Truly, live and local.

And not a smidgen of taped real estate and financial shows while the world is screaming.

  1. Seriously Rich, no way is KGO going to move the Cal game to KSFO. It's called money and an obligation. You of all people having worked in the business knows this

    1. You're wrong.

They have in the past when major news events have occurred. That's why they have sister stations.

And there's been plenty of basketball games on KSFO in the past, don't know exactly when but I know b/c I've seen entries in case of a conflict.

      So it's not unprecedented.

  2. I've been saying for years that Ronnn will do multiple shows on a subject if he's inconvenienced at all. But it doesn't matter if he's inconvenienced because just the thought of him being disrupted in some way will spark it. Every time a president with their entourage comes to town Ronnnn whines and whines.

  3. You are sooo wrong, Rich. I did hear the actual live, local news coverage on KCBS which was terrific as you described. But KGO doesn't have a news operation anymore, remember? They did have a live show at 7pm.I flipped over to hear if KGO was going to realize what was going on in their own backyard just this once. Instead, I heard once again about the drinking obsession of kgo's weakest link, along with details of a comedy show she's doing about her garbageman father that was supposed to be funny, but was not.She pimped this event ten times in ten minutes, there was no mention of the travel ban issue, or a place for callers to vent about a huge international story. Click, back to KCBS. I also learned for the nth time that she has an Irish mother, which is also supposed to be funny, and isn't. How clueless can this get? Can it get worse? PErhaps if they gave the illiterate cook his own show, we could see worse.

  4. Oh how I wish that KGO Radio was back like it was before they changed the format. Hours of information and talk about whats going on today. The phone would be ringing off the hook...

  5. Trump continually told the Country what he was going to do before the election, but no protesting. Now after he was elected everyone is protesting. Why didn't they show the effort they are presenting now, BEFORE the election?, the outcome might have been different.

Is it called, "A day late and a dollar short," or "Quick shut the gate the horse just got out."

Considering there are millions in this area, a few hundred people at the airport was not much of a turnout.

    1. So 11:47, you believe that since Trump was elected POTUS it's too late to react to any objectionable or unconstitutional actions he takes.

Did we also vote to suspend democracy?

      Delete
    2. Well, there was thousands world wide. Then that march thing last week? The million woman one? You remember that? And then you have the election where more than 10 million people voted for somebody not named Trump for President, then for one.
But I get it..if Trump promises ethnic cleansing- You would be good with it. Nothing could make you anti Trump. Even when he breaks the Constitution.

    3. I slipped my little protester a Benadryl...tantrum over!

I'm sure those protesters are used to being roofied.

    4. Oooh, a Benadryl sounds nice.

  6. The KGO you remember is gone. Long gone. Dead and buried. No news department. The owners, however mis-guided they be, made a business decision, that you and I and everyone else has no voice in.

So if you want news on the radio in the Bay Area, you have one choice, KCBS.

The old KGO is not coming back. There's nothing to see there, so move along.

    1. Well yes, that's true. KCBS has always been the go-to station for news, and this was true again the other day. However KCBS lacks the programming for listener feedback and talk, especially in the event of big news. KGO once had both, and now has no news and weak talk. There is no reason why KGO could not have instructed its live talk host to discuss what everyone was talking about the other evening, is there? Is it a "business decision" to be utterly irrelevant?

  7. Sorry, this is not a "major news event".

300,000+ entered the country. About 150 were detained for question. And many of those 150 were sent on their way.

So let's keep this all in perspective.

    1. Thank you Kellyanne Conway. Anyone claiming this is not a major news event missed the massive spontaneous demonstrations that broke out at major cities around the US and the World.

    2. Thank you Rich Lieberman for not posting comments that counter what you're spewing. What a joke this blog is.

    3. You forgot to mention the people with valid green cards who were deported on the spot. A Detroit woman died waiting to come back home. Families were separated. People were denied access to counsel. A five year old was held for hours and his mother denied access. What kind of people are you?

What happened to the Quebec City outrage? Trump used it to validate his EO. Then the shooter turns out to be a white French Canadian terrorist and the outrage evaporated. What kind of people are you?

  9. 11:47...That's what great about our Democracy, we have the right to object and be objectionable, freedom of speech and the right to assemble..one of the reasons I went to war!

If 9/11 didn't educate you, what will? If watching Americans jumping from the Twin Towers to their death, some holding hands, didn't educate you, what will?

    1. Apparently 9/11 didn't educate Donald Trump. None of the 9/11 perpetrators came from any of the countries on Trump's list.

9/11 was awful but it doesn't justify idiotic and counterproductive actions like Trump's EO.

    2. Apparently your favorite liberal media outlets didn't educate you. The 7 countries were from a list the Obama administration put together. Obama does it...great. Trump does it...get out and protest! Make sure Chuck Schumer cries and the camera's are there to film it!

If anyone stopped their temper tantrums for 5 seconds and looked at the facts they would see it's a 90 day "pause". Nothing more, nothing less.

Where was the outrage when the Obama administration quietly suspended refugees from Iraq for 6 months in 2011? Oh that's right, it doesn't fit your spin.

    3. Yes, of course it's OBAMA'S FAULT for selecting those seven countries. Donald Trump is only doing what President Obama wanted to do. Maybe it's Hillary's fault too.

Just an enormous coincidence that Trump doesn't do business in any of those seven countries.

    4. Correction, I committed another, "I are stupid." My post yesterday at 7:35 starts with 11:47 which is wrong, it should have been 11:42, a reply direct at the one and only (almost famous) StanTheObserver. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

As for Trump, I told you it was going to be a massacre, Sally Yates just found out. I posted, let the war begin...it already has.

When you go to war and watch your friends violently die, it changes your prospective...it changes who you are. This Vietnam Veteran is loving it..Go Trump!

When I say, "If 9\11 didn't educate you what will," I am trying to speak for those who are no longer with us, may they rest in peace!

He doesn't do business in 180 or so other countries, either. Your point is..(?)

    6. 11:39 - not true. Real life can't be covered by talking points. There are clear distinctions between what Obama did and what Trump is doing now. See discussion in links below. It requires careful reading and critically sifting through the differences. Or you could continue to repeat bald faced lies.

"When you go to war and watch your friends violently die, it changes your prospective...it changes who you are. This Vietnam Veteran is loving it..Go Trump!"

Very moving but doesn't really make a lot of sense. When you were watching your friends die violently in Vietnam Donald Trump was partying it in NYC with a phony medical deferment.

Why you now want to cheer for a coward who let you and your friends fight and die INSTEAD OF HIM is beyond me.

  10. I see KRON anchors are now wearing real shoes..no more flip flops, blue tennis shoes,or tan loafers on air. Nexstar must have not liked the "wear what you want" on air policy KRON had descended into.
