Where local TV News got it wrong on Occupy Oakland Strike; 49ers heading for KGO/KCBS?; Monday media minutiae

*I applauded the local TV/Radio coverage of the Occupy Oakland strike day, but I was disgusted with the repeated shots of the splinter hoodlum group's vandal attacks on the Whole Foods store and local banks.

The misleading coverage of the side-show, (which was not a part of the 8-9000 generally peaceful protesters and got huge play on the national media front) was not only irresponsible, but grossly negligent.

Think about this analogy: when an idiot runs onto the football or baseball field the camera moves away from the fan. There is NO shot of the dim bulb. Why? Because the networks made it a point not to show these morons so they would not get any attention. It's called a deterrent for a reason.

The same policy could have and should have been applied to what took place in Oakland. The 40-50 thugs, anarchists, who spread mayhem had zero to do with the thousands of folks who were otherwise orderly--loud, energized, but non-violent.

But local TV editors, looking for the slightest bit of a video 'bite couldn't resist. They need to go look at the handbook again.

*I had written last week that the 49ers broadcast hierarchy was none-too-thrilled with being second banana on KNBR to the Giants. While they're pleased to be associated with the brand of Knibber's sports image, they ultimately want some sort of "we're first" status.

I wouldn't be surprised down the road if the 49ers were to land on either KGO or KCBS. Both are 50,000-watt stations and both could eventually be induced into making a play for the team's broadcasts. (And don't forget that KGO is now owned by Cumulus, which owns KNBR).

The Raiders' too are a potential player for both KGO and/or KCBS. (They are stuck on an FM outpost and don't enjoy the talk-show compliment that the 49ers have with their current partners.)

We'll eventually know sooner or later.

*Oakland mayor, Jean Quan, on TV and radio: every time I see and hear her, I need a red bull.

  1. Except those looting and vandalizing don't generally do so in the presence of cops.
The film of those idiots (like the ones stealing Nikes during the Meserle riots) came in handy when it came time to identify and prosecute them.
I see it as the filming and broadcast of the violence as a deterrent.

  2. Occupy Oakland's failure to deal with these criminals is biting them in the ass, and rightfully so. And there were a lot more than 40-50 of them at Whole Earth. If Occupy want's to keep talking abut how inclusive they are, instead of dealing with criminals in their midst, then the publicity will get worse.

  3. Or-you could compare looting "Whole Earths" wheat bread and chips to the looting of trillions of dollars by the bankers over homes and big business over worthless wars.
You people who complain are dumb as rocks. Be amazed that city's havent burned to the ground. I am.

  4. Come on. You know better than anyone that if it bleeds, it leads. Sex and wrecks, etc. It was a made for TV signature act of vandalism. Your sporting events and streakers analogy fails. The story here was about the riot and the protest, showing heart-to-heart rational discussions and peaceful marching would make for dull nightly news.

  5. The Raiders need to get off that FM station. We can't get their reception in Monterey county. I was hiking near the beach yesterday and KCBS, KNBR, KGO and KPFA came in loud and clear. Not Da Raiders....

It doesn't help with Mayor Quan. :(

  7. As a Raider season ticket holder and Greg Papa fan, I wish I could listen to the play by play while at the game, but there is a seven second delay! Do I have Janet Jackson's nipple to blame for this? But this is radio, are they afraid Tom Flores is going to drop f-bombs?

  8. Richie, you need to sit out here with the occupiers for awhile, and then get back to us. We should IGNORE the property damage? You sound like one of them.
